Abstract:
Randall J. Newsome attended Boston University for his Bachelor of Arts in 1972 and the University of Cincinnati College of Law for his Juris Doctor in 1975. With 28 years of experience serving as a settlement and bankruptcy judge, Judge Newsome is best known for his intelligent and pragmatic approach to resolving complex matters and he is frequently sought out as a national speaker on topics related to bankruptcy. Judge Newsome devoted much of his career handling local and national bankruptcy issues. Not only was Judge Newsome vocal about bankruptcy reform for consumers, but he was also actively involved with the ongoing legislative battles over bankruptcy reform, particularly during the ever changing Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act (BAPCPA) in the late 1990s. American Law Institute Uniform Commercial Code records, 1935-2003 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) was the result of a joint project between the American Law Institute (ALI) and the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Law (NCCUSL). Work on the UCC began in 1945 in response to a perceived need by members of both ALI and NCCUSL to consolidate a number of uniform laws, previously enacted by NCCUSL, related to commercial transactions. NCCUSL was established in 1891 for the purpose of codifying state law by creating uniform laws and model acts. ALI was founded in 1923 in response to a perceived uncertainty and complexity in American Law. The Institute had previously developed a codification of particular areas of the law, known as the Restatement of the Law. Thus, cooperation between ALI and NCCUSL on the UCC presented a likely partnership. The first version of the UCC was approved in 1951. Abstract:
The Model Penal Code, first completed in 1962 and revised and expanded over the next 20 years, played a role in the revision and codification of criminal law. The Chief Reporter on the project was Herbert Wechsler. A Criminal Law Advisory Committee was established to provide the reportorial staff with guidance in the drafting of the Code. A Proposed Official Draft was published in 1962. This version generated wide response among legislatures and courts, prompting a revision and expansion of the code's commentaries that began in 1976. A final version of the Model Penal Code, with revised commentaries, was published in 1985. The Code influenced the areas of jurisdiction, double jeopardy, responsibility, criminal attempts, theft, abortion, obscenity, sentencing, and capital punishment. In 1974, the American Law Institute began a new series of studies of federal income tax problems. The Federal Income Tax Project comprised a number of studies, including those of Subchapter C, Subchapter K, and Subchapter J of the Internal Revenue Code; a study of international taxation; and a study of generation-skipping transfers. The collection, 1974-1999, includes correspondence, meeting minutes, drafts, memoranda, commentary, and related materials concerning various tax-related projects conducted by the ALI from 1974 to present.

In 1986, the American Law Institute (ALI) began a study, at the suggestion of Chief Justice Warren Burger, to examine the cost, volume, and delay caused by civil litigation in order to provide alternative paths to conflict resolution. Work on the project continued through 1988, generating a number of reports and working papers. The collection, 1986-1988, includes administrative materials, reports, letters, and other records related to the project, which studied ways other than litigation of resolving civil disputes.

In December 1930, the American Law Institute (ALI) began work on drafting an Act on Double Jeopardy, later known as the Administration of the Criminal Law project. William E. Mikell of the University of Pennsylvania Law School served as Reporter. The project culminated in the creation of an Official Draft, adopted by the ALI, with amendments, on August 15, 1935. The collection, 1930-1935, includes preliminary drafts, tentative drafts, a proposed final draft, and an official draft related to the subject of double jeopardy as outlined in the Administration of the Criminal Law project.

Uniform Contribution Among Tortfeasors Act records, 1937-1941 (inclusive)

In 1936, The American Law Institute and the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Law jointly undertook a project to draft a statute that established a common policy for dealing with contributions among people who have been found guilty of committing a wrong. The statute, promulgated in 1939, was called the Uniform Contribution Among Tortfeasors Act. The collection, 1937-1941, includes drafts and correspondence related to the joint ALI-NCCUSL project to draft a model statute concerned with contributions among tortfeasors.

The Federal Judicial Code Revision Project is the Institute's third major work on the jurisdiction of the federal courts. In 1969, the American Law Institute published its Study of the Division of Jurisdiction Between State and Federal Courts. This work reconsiders three subjects within Title 28 of the United States Code: supplemental jurisdiction, venue, and removal.

The North American Free Trade Agreement has stimulated a large increase in economic activity that crosses the Canadian, Mexican, and United States borders. Inevitably, this has resulted in an increase in the number of bankruptcies in which creditors and assets are located in more than one of the NAFTA countries. The American Law Institute's (ALI's) Transnational Insolvency: Cooperation Among the NAFTA Countries arose in response to this increasing number of bankruptcies of multinational economic enterprises. The Project's eventual goal was to develop principles and procedures for managing the general default of an economic enterprise having its center of interest in a NAFTA country and having assets, creditors, and operations in more than one NAFTA country. The collection, 1991-1997, includes drafts and related materials pertaining to the creation of international statements for United States Bankruptcy Law, Canadian Bankruptcy Law, and Mexican Bankruptcy Law.

Mary Kay Kane graduated from University of Michigan Law School in 1971. She served as a Professor at the State University of New York - Buffalo Law School from 1974 to 1977 and as a professor, Academic Dean, Dean, and Chancellor at the University of California, Hastings Law School from 1977 to 2006. Kane's area of interest was civil procedure from which she published many books and articles. Abstract:
Deborah A. DeMott completed her B.A. in 1970 from Swarthmore College and received her Juris Doctorate from New York University in 1973. DeMott spent her early years in DuBois, Pennsylvania. She served as articles editor of the New York University Law Review. DeMott began her professional career with a judicial clerkship in a federal court in New York City, and later practiced with a large law firm in that city, until she joined the Duke law faculty in 1975. In 1989, she received the Scholar/Teacher of the Year Award from Duke University. Professor DeMott served as the Reporter for the American Law Institute's Restatement (Third) of Agency, published in 2006. This collection includes materials such as correspondence, financial material, notes, printed materials, and council and preliminary drafts of the Restatement of the Law Third.

In 1989, the American Law Institute began producing videotaped oral history interviews with individuals who were active in the Institute's affairs. The project is ongoing. The Oral Histories Record Group, 1989-1993, includes video oral history recordings with Herbert Wechsler (1989 April 13), Homer Kripke (1989 September 9), and A. James Casner (1990 May 16). Each oral history has a corresponding transcript. Also included is a typewritten transcript of an oral history with Paul Wolkin (1993 July 8 and 26).

David L. Bazelon Papers, 1941-1993 and undated (inclusive)

Abstract:
David Lionel Bazelon (1909-1993) graduated from Northwestern University Law School in 1932. In 1936, Bazelon joined the United States Attorney's Office in Chicago, where he specialized in tax cases. In 1949, President Harry S. Truman appointed Bazelon to the newly-created United States Court of Appeals for the District Columbia, making Bazelon, at forty years old, one of the youngest people ever appointed to a federal judgeship. He served on the court from 1949 to 1984, acting as Chief Judge from 1962 to 1978. During this time the Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia was often considered the nation's second highest court. In his years on the court Bazelon was involved in decisions on matters ranging from the use of DDT to the definition of insanity. In the mid-1980s Bazelon stopped hearing cases and finally retired from the bench. He died on February 19, 1993, of Alzheimer's disease. Henry S. Drinker Papers, 1929-1950 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Henry S. Drinker (1880-1965) was graduate of Haverford College, Harvard University, and the University of Pennsylvania. In 1904, Drinker joined the prominent Philadelphia Law firm Drinker Biddle & Reath in 1904. An authority on legal ethics, Drinker's book on the subject, "Legal Ethics," was published in 1933 and went on to become a classic. An amateur musicologist, Drinker founded the Drinker Library of Choral Music at the Free Library of Philadelphia. The Drinker Music Center was dedicated in his name at Haverford College in 1962. Primarily writings by Henry S. Drinker regarding criticism by Sir Francis Newbolt over some of his books, an essay called "Legal Plots," and a writing called "The Lawyers of Anthony Trollope. The collection, 1929-1950, also includes correspondence with Alfred A. Knopf and Sir Francis Newbolt.

Abstract:
Bernard G. Segal graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School (now known as the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School) in 1931. Segal became the youngest Deputy Attorney General in Pennsylvania's history in 1932, the first Jewish lawyer elected Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association in 1952, and the first Jewish president of the American Bar Association in 1969. Segal also co-chaired the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and headed the Office of Economic Opportunity's Advisory Committee on Legal Services to the Poor. The Bernard G. Segal papers document all of Segal's activities outside of his work as a lawyer at Schnader, Harrison, Segal, and Lewis. This includes correspondence, reports, and minutes from his professional associations, governmental appointments, and his civic work.

A. Leo Levin, born in 1919 received his B.A. from Yeshiva University in 1939. He attended the University of Pennsylvania Law School and received his J.D. in 1942. Levin then took his first teaching job at the University of Iowa where he taught for two years before returning to his alma mater Penn Law School. Levin taught at Penn Law until his appointment as Director of the Federal Judicial Center in 1977. Levin participated in numerous legal professional organizations such as the American Bar Association, the Association of American Law Schools and the Order of the Coif. Levin also served on a number of high profile judiciary committees such as the Legislative Reapportionment Committee from 1971-1973, the Commission on Revision of the Federal Court Appellate System from 1973-1975, and the Civil Justice Reform Act Advisory Group. Abstract:
John Cobb Cooper, Jr., a prolific writer in international air and space law, was born on September 18, 1887 in Jacksonville, Florida. Cooper received his A.B. from Princeton University in 1909 and was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1911. Cooper married Martha Helen Marvel in 1918 and the couple had three children. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1917-1921 and held the rank of lieutenant and eventually Lieutenant-Commander. After being relieved from active service with the U.S. Navy, Cooper's embarked on a career that eventually led him to publish and present numerous articles on international air and space law. Nearing the end of his life in 1966, Cooper specifically selected 54 of his published articles on air and space law in hopes to be included in the Anna and Jonas Berger Memorial Space Law Collection at Biddle Law Library. Penn Law School Legal Oral History Project Files, 1999-2006 (inclusive)

The Penn Law School Legal Oral History Project was a collaborative effort from 1999 through 2006 by a team of faculty, librarians, and students to record and preserve first-person narratives of graduates and members of the Penn Law Community as well as notable public interest lawyers. The project began as a seminar, the goal of which was to train students in the theory and practice of oral history. Each student then selected a distinguished graduate or member of the Penn Law community and conducted a one-to-two hour videotaped interview. Following the interview, the student transcribed the videotape and prepared a biographical article. The Judge Joe Lee papers, 1961-2012, consist of material from Lee's active involvement in bankruptcy organizations and legislation. Joe Lee received his law degree from the University of Kentucky in 1955. He served as counsel to the Congressional Labor Subcommittee for the U.S. House of Representatives before being appointed a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge on September 1, 1961. He was one of the longest serving bankruptcy judges in the nation and played a pivotal role in the enactment of the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 1978.
