Abstract:
This manuscript book of meetings, compiled in about 1765 by an anonymous author, lists the Quaker Meetings in the Yearly Meetings of New England, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and North Carolina. According to a note on the back of the first page of the photostatic copy, the original manuscript was located at the Moses Brown School in Providence, Rhode Island, as of 1932, and that it had previously belonged to a woman named Mary Olney.

The collection contains correspondence received by Philadelphia Quaker merchant John Ladd Howell and his family. The majority of the letters were sent by his father, John Howell, addresseed to him and to his mother during extended absences in North and South Carolina and Georgia. The letters concern family business with fatherly advice to his son, some local commentary, and mention of mistreatment of the Indians. Of interest is a letter from Richard Waln from the Barbadoes. John Hughes Memorandum Book, 1704-1762

Abstract:
John Hughes was a yeoman from Wales who came with his family to Pennsylvania in 1698. He was among the first to settle in Gwynedd in what is now Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Hughes was a member of the Society of Friends and opened his house to worshipers until a meeting house was built. He had three children with his first wife, Martha Caimot, and two with his second wife, Ellen. He moved to Exeter, Berks County in 1731 with his son Ellis and grandson John and died there in 1736. John Hughes's memorandum book contains the records of some of his business affairs, including accounts of goods given out on credit, goods received, and money paid and received. The most substantive portions of the volume consist of entries made during conferences held in Easton, Pennsylvania, between Native Americans and Pennsylvanians during July and November 1756. George Gillespie notes taken from Dr. Thomas Young’s Lectures on Midwifery, 1761

Abstract:
Dr. Thomas Young, 1730-1783, was appointed a professor of midwifery at the University of Edinburgh from 1756 until his death in 1783. He is generally considered to be the father of the University of Edinburgh’s School of Obstetrics. During his tenure, he created a Lying-In Ward at the Royal Infirmary, later the Edinburgh Maternity Hospital, to give clinical lectures. George Gillespie appears to have been a student of Dr. Young, and this collection consists of two volumes containing Gillespie’s verbatim notes of Dr. Young’s Lectures on Midwifery at the University of Edinburgh in 1761.

This collection contains correspondence received by English Quaker Jonah Thompson. The bulk of these are written by Friends in Pennsylvania, relating the developing conflict between the Pennsylvania government and the Delaware Indians, and expressing concern with the role Quakers should have in a military defense of the colony. Included is a detailed account of developments regarding this issue in the Pennsylvania government by James Pemberton. Other prominent Philadelphia correspondents include Samuel Fothergill, John Smith, Hannah Pemberton, Hannah Logan, and Margaret Wistar Also included is a letter from George Churchman.

Gerard van Swieten (1770-1772) was a Dutch-Austrian physician who served as the personal physician to Austrian Empress Maria Theresa in 1745 and transformed the Austrian health services as well as medical university education. This collection consists of eight volumes of medical writings in Latin concerning nutrition, pharmacy, and surgery. Several pages at the beginning of Volume I, and a few pages elsewhere, are translated into English on the facing pages.
