Alfred Bendiner Papers, 1921-1970 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Alfred Bendiner received both a bachelor of architecture degree in 1922 and a master's degree in 1927 from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1937, when he accompanied the University Museum's archeological expedition to Tepe Gawra and Khafaji, Iraq, Bendiner's task was to draw architectural blueprints of these sites. He was also architect to the university's Tikal-Tikal archeological expedition to Guatamala in 1960. These papers include Alfred Bendiner's published articles and his drawings (originals and reproductions) done for publications by his class and by the University of Pennsylvania.

Francis Brisbane Dick Journal, 1820-1847 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Francis Brisbane Dick was born in the Medical Hall of the University of Pennsylvania in 1814. He belonged to a family which served as janitors for the University, then located on Ninth Street. Before becoming a janitor, Francis worked for the First Presbyterian Church, then located on the corner of Seventh and Locust Streets facing Washington Square, as a sexton and locksmith. His duties included attending on funerals, digging graves, and installing or repairing locks in private houses. This collection consists of a manuscript journal account book, which is divided in roughly two parts. The first part, pages 1-45, date from 1820-1823 and contain accounts of the First Presbyterian Church. The second part, pages 47-81, of the journal contain the private accounts of Francis Brisbane Dick as sexton and locksmith between 1837 and 1843, when he was employed by the First Presbyterian Church.

Abstract:
Edgar Meck Dilley attended the University of Pennsylvania from 1893 to 1895. While at Penn, Dilley studied architecture and was an active member of the Glee Club. As a sophomore, he composed the lyrics to the University's alma mater "Hail, Pennsylvania" and encouraged William J. Goeckel and Harry E. Westervelt to write "The Red and Blue," the alma mater more commonly sung today. This small collection consists primarily of printed and published works by Edgar Meck Dilley, including poetry, short stories, novels, the script of an operetta, and the lyrics of "The Red and Blue".

Alma Maria Mahler Gropius Werfel (1879-1964) was a composer, author, and editor. Born in Vienna, she was forced to leave Austria in 1938, after the Anschluss, seeking refuge in the United States. Her husband, Franz Werfel, was a life-long friend of Willy Haas, editor of Die Welt, who assisted Alma with the German edition of her autobiography, Mein Leben. This collection consists almost entirely of letters written by Alma Mahler Werfel and sent to Willy Haas. The letters are all in German. There are two additional letters, one: a photocopy of a letter from Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980), an Austrian artist, poet, and playwright; and the other: a photocopy of a letter from Alma to Baroness Annie Schey.

The Rare Book Room at the University of Pennsylvania opened on May 27, 1947. The opening was attended by more than five hundred guests, and speeches were given by Dr. Charles W. David, Director of Libraries; President George W. McClelland; Dr. A. S. W. Rosenbach; and the primary speaker for the evening, Randolph G. Adams, Director of the William L. Clements Library of the University of Michigan. The collection contains administrative documents pertaining to the planning of the event including program details, correspondence, acceptances, and regrets.

Abstract:
The Gotham Book Mart (1920-2006) was one of New York City's most iconic bookstores during the 20th century. Founded by Frances Steloff (1887-1989), the daughter of poor Russian-Jewish immigrants, the Book Mart became a social center for the New York literati and a focal point for literary modernism in the United States. Steloff's successor, independent literary manuscript dealer Andreas Brown (1933-), maintained the store's focus on avant garde and small press publications while incorporating his own interests in postcards and genealogy. This collection contains 91 boxes of material relating to the daily operation of the Book Mart; correspondence, biographical, and legal material from both Brown and Steloff; postcard and genealogical material collected by Brown; photographs of the store, its employees, and events which took place there; and manuscripts and ephemera offered for sale.

Abstract:
William Nickerson Bates (1867-1949) was a professor of Greek Language and Literature at the University of Pennsylvania from 1895 to 1939. He wrote primarily on Attic tragedy, including two major volumes on Euripides and Sophocles, the manuscripts for which can be found in this collection. The volumes, Euripides, a student of Human Nature and Sophocles serve to acquaint the modern reader (one with little or no knowledge of ancient Greek) with the original meaning of the plays since, as Bates stated, no work had theretofore been published for such readers that dealt directly with the original Greek texts.

William Marshall Hollenback starred on the varsity football team at the University of Pennsylvania from 1904 – 1908 where he earned All-American honors at the position of fullback. After graduating in 1908 with a degree in Dentistry, Hollenback went on to serve as head coach for Penn State (1909, 1911-1914), the University of Missouri (1910), Pennsylvania Military College (1915) and Syracuse University (1916). Three main scrapbooks, which span the dates [1906] to 1960, are the centerpieces of this collection. Newspaper clippings about Hollenback and the University of Pennsylvania football team's exploits from 1906-1908, including later retrospective articles, comprise the bulk of the material in the scrapbooks.

Laurence H. Eldredge earned his LL.B. degree of Law from the University of Pennsylvania in 1927. Eldredge started teaching law in Philadelphia in the late 1920s, first at Temple University and later at the University of Pennsylvania. From 1940 to 1968 he was a lecturer on medical jurisprudence at the Penn Medical School. He began his attorney practice in the 1930s and became a well-known lawyer in the Philadelphia area. In addition to his teaching and attorney services, Eldredge also distinguished himself through active participation in civic and cultural affairs. Abstract:
Adalbert Riedl (1898-1979) was a teacher, politician, museum director, collector, and folklorist from the Austrian state of Burgenland, a region with strong ties to today's Hungary. The Adalbert Riedl collection contains nearly 700 titles, mostly prayers and religious songs in leaflet or chapbook form. Additionally, there is a collection of 28 printed leaflets bound into a single volume (Sammelband) and a small number of manuscripts in German Kurrentschrift. The bulk of the collection was printed in the 19th century. There are a few pieces from the 18th century and a few from the early 20th century. The items are primarily in the German language, many printed in Fraktur, and a small number are in Hungarian, as well as Croatian, Czech, Slovakian, and Slovenian.

The Eugene Ormandy family home movies are amateur films shot between 1932 and 1947 by conductor Eugene Ormandy on his own hand-held camera and by others when Ormandy appears in the films. The content of the films includes scenes of Ormandy conducting the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Also included are arrivals and departures at train stations along with musicians from his two resident orchestras. Otherwise, the content of the films is primarily scenes of leisure. The locales include his home in Minneapolis, MN, European cities including London, Vienna, and Stockholm, and several vacations in the Austrian alps, as well as vacations in Florida, Bermuda, and New Hampshire. The University of Pennsylvania Women's Club originated in 1906 when Mary Spring Gardiner Frazier, wife of the Dean of the Medical School, Charles Harrison Frazier, organized an informal gathering for several faculty wives to meet every two weeks for tea. It was officially founded, however, in 1910 under the name of the Faculty Tea Club of the University of Pennsylvania. The University of Pennsylvania Women's Club Records contains material of its activities and official business. The bulk of the collection contains financial records and a chronological file.
