Overview and metadata sections

A ruled volume with marbled-paper covers comprising a travel diary by an unnamed writer probably from England. The travel journal was written while touring Japan and Shanghai, China from April 16 to May 17, 1902. The writer mentions he is traveling with Ava probably his wife. The daily entries provide descriptions of various cities in Japan including Kobe, Kameoka, Kyoto, Nagasaki, Tokyo, and Yokohama and a trip to Shanghai, China. He recorded traveling by boat, horse and carriage, rickshaw, and train. There are descriptions of cities, landmarks, landscapes, and people. Written details of beggars, entertainments, gardens, music, schools, shops, and temples visited by the couple have been recorded. While visiting Japanese temples the writer noted Shinto and Buddhist works of art. Highlights include descriptions of visiting various factories and workshops producing fans, porcelain, and silk; celebrations and shows at a temple in Kyoto; observing street dancing, fireworks, performances, processions, and geisha shows; and the Imperial Palace. While In Shanghai the writer noted the feet of Chinese women; comparisons of Japanese pagodas and temples to those in Shanghai; and various musical performances. Details of traveling to and from destinations were also discussed.
