Since its founding, it has experienced "booming industry and manufacturing, rich farm fields, advanced transportation, artistic endeavors and unique religious beliefs." The history of the area of eastern Montgomery County has been documented significantly through the collecting efforts of the Old York Road Historical Society. The Old York Road Historical Society atlas and map collection, 1848-circa 2000, documents Montgomery County, Philadelphia County, and parts of the Delaware Valley.

Abstract:
Previously a sparsely-settled farming area, early development in Spring City (Chester County, Pennsylvania) and adjacent Royersford (Montgomery County, Pennsylvania) coincided with the opening of the Schuylkill Navigation Canal in 1824. Industry in the two towns continued to grow during the 19th century, especially with the construction of major rail lines through both. By the early 20th century, Spring City and Royersford were booming industrial towns with extensive stove factories, glass and bottle works, and embroidery, hosiery, and knitting mills, among other businesses. The Spring-Ford Area Historical Society local history collection, 1789-2000 (bulk 1880-1960), consists of photographs, scrapbooks, manuscript volumes, pamphlets and ephemera, deeds, and various other documents relating to local history. Photographs form the largest portion of the collection.

Abstract:
Ritner W. Tomlinson (1880-1949) was raised on his family's farm in the Bustleton neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Ritner married Caroline F. Foehr (1890-1981) in 1911 and together they had four children: twins Isabel R. (1915-2010) and Esther R. (1915-1938), Ritner Pierson "Buddy" (1922-1944), and Thelma Claire (1924-2006). Ritner and Caroline raised their family on the Tomlinson Farm, which Ritner had inherited from his parents in the 1920s. In the mid-1930s, the Tomlinsons lost this farm due to financial difficulties, and relocated to another farm property in nearby Huntingdon Valley (Montgomery County). The Tomlinson, Foehr, and Peters families papers, 1713-1998 (bulk 1870-1970), consist of photographs, legal and financial documents, correspondence, diaries, ephemera, and other materials related to the Tomlinson, Foehr, and Peters families. The bulk of the material is from the Tomlinson family and predominately relates to Ritner W., his wife Caroline, and their children.

John Roberts was among the first settlers of Merion, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania in 1683. His descendants included civic leaders, a physician, a president of the Pennsylvania Railroad and a state senator; the businesses his family started included a model dairy farm and the Pencoyd Iron Works. The Roberts Family Collection, 1677-1998, includes indentures and deeds, maps, tax receipts, wills, correspondence, photograph albums and a daguerreotype, genealogical research, and diaries. The highlight of this collection is a series of private letter books of George Brooke Roberts (president of the Pennsylvania Railroad), 1833-1897.

Francis "Frank" Blase Jr. (1938-1999) was a Pennsylvania resident was devoted to local and coal mining history. He was a member of the Lansdale Historical Society (Montgomery County, Pa.) and founded the North Penn Historical Library (Montgomery County, Pa.) and the Research Library for Coal Mining (Pottsville, Pa.). The Frank Blase collection on North Penn History, 1884-1997, consists almost entirely of newspaper clippings, with a few original photographs (circa 1900-1915), handwritten notes, and pamphlets. Kurtz and H. Parker Rolfe. The cornerstone for Fifth Street Methodist Episcopal Church at the intersection of Fifth and York Streets in Pottstown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, was laid in 1888. Its name was changed to Thomas Searles Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church when the congregation moved to a new church building designed by Joseph M. Huston in 1911. Ralph Beaver Strassburger (1883-1959) was a prominent businessman, newspaper owner, diplomat, and Thoroughbred racehorse breeder. His wife, May Bourne, was heiress to the Singer Sewing Machine Company. Strassburger was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, and bought the Normandy Farm property in nearby Gwynedd Valley in 1913. This bulk of this collection is photographs of the Strassburger family and Normandy Farm estate (interior and exterior), circa 1880-1940. It also contains one letter from 1863, one postcard from 1932, and an auction catalog and history of Normandy Farm from 1994.

In 1764, Abraham Wentz built a public house on Skippack Pike in Blue Bell, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The Rising Sun Inn was a wayside tavern, but also served as a public space for political discussion and commerce. Joseph Fornance (1804-1852) was a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Norristown, Pennsylvania. Like the elder Joseph, his son Joseph Fornance (1841-1923) and grandson Joseph Knox Fornance (1882-1965) were lawyers involved with politics. The Fornance family papers, 1794-1989, is an extensive collection of correspondence, ledgers, diaries, photograph albums, scrapbooks, and documents covering several generations of one family. Family members were involved in numerous matters over more than one-and-a-half centuries, so among other subjects, there is rich documentation of military service during the Civil War and World War I, the election of Woodrow Wilson, and early efforts at historic preservation (the Fornance family home is considered the oldest in Norristown).

Fetter family papers, circa 1880s-1984

Abstract:
Sometime prior to 1754, Casper W. Fetter (1726-1779) emigrated from Germany and established a farm in what would become Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. His many descendants, several of whom had strong ties to the Southampton Baptist Church in Southampton, Bucks County, became farmers in Bucks and Montgomery counties during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Fetter family papers, circa 1880s-1984, contain photographs, letters, genealogy research, newspaper clippings, vital records, and other materials that document the Fetter family, its history, and other families, including the Leedom, Montanye, and Lefferts families, whose members married into the Fetter family. There are also materials that document the Southampton Baptist Church. The materials were collected by Claude K. Fetter (1901-1984), a direct descendant of Casper W. Fetter.

Samuel Whitaker Pennypacker (1843-1916) served as governor of Pennsylvania from 1903-1907. A prominent Philadelphia lawyer, judge, and president of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania from 1900 to 1916, Pennypacker also authored more than ninety books and publications. The Samuel W. Pennypacker family papers at Pennypacker Mills, 1821-1980, is a well documented collection that reflects the interests of Samuel W. Pennypacker, his term as governor of Pennsylvania, the construction of the State Capitol, Pennsylvania history, family history, and Pennsylvania German culture.
