Edward R. Barnsley (1906-1989) was an historian from Newtown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He was active in historic preservation, particularly the reconstruction of Pennsbury Manor. The Edward R. Barnsley research files, 1889-1985 (bulk 1941-1985), consist of Barnsley's research notes on local businesses, buildings, and people. There are mostly copies of primary-source documents and secondary-source articles by Barnsley and others on local history topics. There is a small amount of original materials, including original manuscripts written by Barnsley and incoming correspondence.

Abstract:
Settled by English Quakers in the late 17th century, the village of Fallsington in Falls Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania became significant as a religious, social and commercial center for the surrounding community. It served as a popular stopover point for travelers due to its location along several major transportation systems. Fallsington became the first historic district in Bucks County (1955) and was subsequently placed on the National Register of Historic Places (1971). The Historic Fallsington, Inc. manuscript collection includes the papers of numerous Fallsington families and individuals, as well as other materials that document the history of the village. Items include personal papers, account books and other financial papers, diaries, photographs, deeds, maps, and genealogy research.

Fetter family papers, circa 1880s-1984

Abstract:
Sometime prior to 1754, Casper W. Fetter (1726-1779) emigrated from Germany and established a farm in what would become Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. His many descendants, several of whom had strong ties to the Southampton Baptist Church in Southampton, Bucks County, became farmers in Bucks and Montgomery counties during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Fetter family papers, circa 1880s-1984, contain photographs, letters, genealogy research, newspaper clippings, vital records, and other materials that document the Fetter family, its history, and other families, including the Leedom, Montanye, and Lefferts families, whose members married into the Fetter family. There are also materials that document the Southampton Baptist Church. The materials were collected by Claude K. Fetter (1901-1984), a direct descendant of Casper W. Fetter.

The White Hall Hotel is an historic structure in Newtown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The hotel had numerous owners including the Chesner family, who owned and operated the inn for a large part of the 20th century. The building, gutted by fire in 1979, has since been converted into commercial/retail and office space. The White Hall Hotel records, 1897-1956, consist primarily of ledgers with daily accounts, inventory lists, and employee records. An altruistic and benevolent fraternal organization, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.), which was originally organized in England in the 18th century, was started by Thomas Wildey in the United States in 1819. Hopkins Lodge No. 87, located in Bristol, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, was organized in 1843. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows Hopkins Lodge No. 87 (Bristol, Pa.) records, 1843-1982, consist primarily of minute books and ledgers, and a Junior 3 Link Club minute book and Link Club membership forms. The Headley family papers, circa 1788- 1981, document several generations of the Headley family and related family members, particularly the family of Charles Moon Headley (b. 1865) and Elizabeth Schurz Headley (b. 1871), including their daughters Alice Headley Woodruff (1894-1989) and Eleanor Christina Headley (b. 1897). The collection is largely made up of photographs that document the family and the village of Fallsington, circa 1850-1950, and bound volumes including account books, minute books, and diaries. Catherine "Kitty" Reading Belville (1897-1995) was born in Yardley, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Belville was a 1919 graduate of Swarthmore College, and established the Belville Scholarship there in 1982 in honor of her parents. Having a strong interest in history, Belville was a member of the Colonial Yardley Association (predecessor of the Yardley Historical Association). The Catherine R. Belville family papers, 1885-1981 (bulk 1950-1980), mostly consist of the personal papers of Catherine R. Belville, including correspondence, diaries, ephemera, and photographs, as well as some papers relating to the Belville family. Many of the materials relate to Belville's time as a student at Swarthmore College and her continued association with the school. Pearl S. Buck (1892-1973) was an American author, best known for her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Good Earth and her humanitarian work including her advocacy for women's and minority groups' rights, her efforts to increase and promote mutual understanding between the people of China and America, and her activities with Asian and interracial adoption. Buck married her publisher, Richard J. Walsh (1886-1960), in 1935. The Pearl S. Buck and Richard J. Charles Savidge (1835-1908) married Sarah Hutchinson Morris (1864-1914), with whom he had two children: Morris Savidge (1895-1979) and Clarence Savidge (1900-1986). The family lived in Newtown (Bucks County, Pennsylvania), where they owned and operated Savidge Brothers retail store for over a century. The Savidge family papers, circa 1875-1970, consist mostly of personal papers, particularly relating to Morris and Clarence. The collection includes letters from Morris to his brother while the former was in military training and active duty in France during World War I as well as related photographs. Solebury Township in Bucks County, Pennsylvania has had a total of twelve one-room school houses over the course of its history. The first and later best-attended of these, known as Center Hill School, was constructed in 1757 and is believed to be the oldest building in continuous educational usage in Bucks County, and possibly in the state of Pennsylvania. The Solebury Township schools attendance registers, 1869-1969, consist of student attendance lists from schools--including many one-room schoolhouses--in Solebury Township. Solebury Elementary School records comprise well over half of the collection. There are also a few financial records from the New Hope-Solebury School District and a cash book from the Quaker City Justice College (1865-1877).

Yardley Borough in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, was settled in 1682 by Quaker minister William Yeardley, who purchased a tract of land from William Penn. Following the completion of the Bristol-New Hope section of the Delaware Canal in 1831, new commerce and trade poured into the town, then called "Yardleyville." The town continued to grow following the completion of the New York branch of the railroad in 1876 that included a nearby station. Yardley was incorporated as a borough in 1895. The Yardley Borough records, 1895-1967, include scattered administrative and financial records of the Borough, as well as records from the Borough Planning and Zoning Commission and Board of Health.

The Free School Act of 1834 established a system of public schools in Pennsylvania. The Plumstead Township (Bucks County) School Board at one point oversaw a dozen small schools in the area. In 1959, Plumstead joined nearby Buckingham and Doylestown townships to form the Central Bucks Joint Elementary School Board, and its remaining schools were consolidated into Gayman Elementary School, finished in 1961. Settled by Quakers beginning in 1680, the small town of Langhorne in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, became an important transportation center between Trenton and Philadelphia. Harvey G. Wells, a stone mason, and his son Gilbert R. Wells, a contractor and builder, were involved in a significant amount of construction in the town during its growth from the mid-19th to the early 20th century. The Wells family papers, 1845-1959, consist primarily of the business records of Harvey G. Wells and Gilbert R. Wells. Oliver P. James (1815-1894) was a prominent doctor and community member in Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He, his wife Sarah (1824-1906), and their three children Oliver (1860-1890), Martha (1862-1918), and Sarah (1864-1954) lived at what is now known as the James-Lorah Memorial Home at 132 N. Main Street in Doylestown. In 1896, Dr. James' daughter, Martha, married George H. Lorah (1863-1945), a minister at the Doylestown Methodist Episcopal Church. Martha's sister, Sarah James was a charter member of the Village Improvement Association of Doylestown (VIA), and upon her passing in 1954, the family home and its contents and property, as well as a trust fund for maintenance were bequeathed to the VIA. From 1880 until 1923, the office of postmaster for Dublin (Bucks County, Pennsylvania) was held at various times by J. S. Rickert, Benjamin F. Shearer, and Jacob B. Rosenberger, depending on the political affiliation of the mayor. In 1923, Jacob M. Kooker became postmaster and re-located the post office to his general store. Kooker retired in 1944; the post office remained at the site until 1975. The Dublin Post Office records, 1880-1945, consist of Postmaster's Account and Record Books (4th Class), registers of money orders issued and received, and records of registered letters received and delivered.

The Joseph Heacock Company, founded by former Pennsylvania State Senator Joseph Heacock, Jr. (1846-1918) and located in Lower Makefield Township (Bucks County, Pa.), served as one of the area's largest employers during the first half of the 20th century. Growers of palms, roses, orchids, and carnations, the company gained international fame, particularly for its roses; its dairy farm served as a significant provider in the surrounding area. The company closed its doors in 1974. Makefield was one of the five original townships of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, established in 1692. It was divided into Lower Makefield and Upper Makefield in 1737. Largely agricultural for most of its history, Lower Makefield's population swelled with suburban development in the 20th century. Abstract:
Dr. Susan Parry was born December 10, 1826, to Charles Parry (1785-1842) and Phebe Fell (1807-1872) in Buckingham Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Susan Parry was raised as a Quaker member of the Society of Friends, and she taught in Lumberville, Pennsylvania, at the Lumberville School in the late 1840s. In 1858, she graduated from the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania (renamed the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania around 1867), the first medical school in the world established to train women and offer them the M.D., which was founded in 1850. While finishing up medical school she wrote a thesis “A Disquisition on Hygiene.” She practiced medicine in Bucks County until she died in Doylestown, Pennsylvania on February 12, 1890, at the age of 63.

William Watts Hart Davis was graduated from military school in Norwich, Vt., in 1842, was professor at Portsmouth (Va.) Military Academy, studied law, was an officer in the Mexican War, returned home to Doylestown and practiced law, was appointed to various government offices for the territory of New Mexico, 1853-1857, returned home where he purchased the Doylestown "Democrat," recruited the 104th Pennsylvania Regiment, and served through the Civil War, returned home to spend the rest of his life managing and editing the Democrat, and speaking and writing on historical subjects. Davis's papers are arranged into several volumes. His incoming correspondence, 1832-1846, 1857-1860, 1880-1882, from family and friends touches on all his activities, with many passing references to politics, although the content is primarily of personal affairs. Hannah B. Lester (b. 1815) was a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) who lived in Quakertown, Pennsylvania. Abram Carn was the proprietor of a general store and post office in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania. The Carn-Buchanan family papers, 1817-1897, are made up of personal correspondence of Hannah B. Lester and three receipt books attributed to Abram Carn and an unknown person with the surname Donut.

Frankenfield family ledgers and school books, 1846-1894 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The first store in Haycock (Bucks County, Pa.), and the only store for the latter half of the 19th century, was the Frankenfield Store. It was built in 1868 by Henry Frankenfield and carried on by family members including M. D. Frankenfield, Abel Frankenfield, John Bergstresser, E. A. Frankenfield, and A. H. Frankenfield. The store ceased operations in the early 1900s, but a post office continued at the location until 1948. The Frankenfield family ledgers and school books, 1846-1894, consist of six ledgers from the Frankenfield store (1890-1894), eight penmanship books from Sarah Frankenfield (circa 1870), and one ciphering book from Sarah Frankenfield's father-in-law, Jeremiah Ott (1846).

E. D. Buckman genealogical collection on the Buckman and allied families, circa 1850-circa 1892, undated

Abstract:
This collection, compiled mostly by Edwin D. Buckman of Philadelphia, contains genealogical records pertaining to the Buckman family of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and many related families, such as the Blakers, Burgesses, and Hestons. The majority of the material consists of handwritten notes which trace the family from its roots in England and Edward Buckman (1623-1670), a Quaker of Sussex County. The Buckmans eventually settled near Newtown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, approximately thirty miles north of Philadelphia. This collection consists of forty-seven volumes, all in modern library bindings. The volumes’ contents vary from histories of the Buckmans to papers on related families to abstracts of minutes from Friends' meetings. There are also notes and charts on the Buckman family by generation, newspaper clippings, and a few family papers such as deeds and correspondence. A few of the volumes contain indexes of other volumes.
