Abstract:
Zelma Corning Brandt (1891-1990) was a social crusader active throughout the twentieth century. Her chief interests included the independence and development of colonial countries, American Indian affairs, nuclear disarmament, women's issues, and geriatric concerns. The collection consists of correspondence, travel notes, diaries and writings, and publications and reports, especially from 1960-1989. Brandt's longevity and attention to detail provide a complete view of various world and domestic issues and events through this period. Zelma Brandt attended Bryn Mawr College from 1909 to 1911.

Chinese Scholarship Committee records, 1916-1988 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Chinese Scholarship Committee was established by Professor Lucy Martin Donnelly in 1916, to provide Chinese women an education who could not otherwise obtain one in China. It was also intended to "deepen the understanding between China and the United States by bringing to this country the type of students who would represent the highest Chinese traditions, and who would in turn interpret to China our western civilization" ("Bryn Mawr Chinese Scholarship Committee," pamphlet). The fund, as established, provided for one annual scholarship to a Chinese woman who wished to attend Bryn Mawr College. The Chinese Scholarship Committee records documents the efforts of Bryn Mawr College diverisify its student body and to introduce to its students a different culture. The collection houses scattered financial and administrative records, as well as a nice body of correspondence from and about the Chinese students who directly benfitted from the fund. Theodore de Laguna (1876-1930) was a professor of philosophy at Bryn Mawr College for 23 years and an author. The Theodore de Laguna collection, dating from 1896 to 1989, contains diverse writings and annotated books by de Laguna. This collection focuses mainly on de Laguna's manuscripts, off prints, and poetry, but also contains original musical arrangements, annotated works by others, and correspondence regarding de Laguna's death in 1930.

Fritz and Karoline Solmitz papers, 1929-2006 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Fritz Solmitz (1893-1933) was an early and outspoken leader in the opposition to Nazism, an editor of a Social Democratic newspaper in Lübeck and a member of the City council. Because of his active opposition to the Nazis, and probably because he was a Jew, he died of mistreatment in a German prison shortly after Hitler came to power. Karoline Somitz (1893-1966) was, like her husband, active in civic affairs. Much of the collection contains letters and photographs, some translated from German.

Maurine Boie La Barre Papers, 1863-1989 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Maurine Boie La Barre received her B.S. from the University of Minnesota in 1927, did graduate work in English there 1927-1928, and received her M.A. in Sociology there in 1932. She received her M.S.W. from Bryn Mawr in 1937 and did further work at the Pennsylvania School of Social Work. During the late 1930s and early 1940s, she was editor-inchief of The Family, journal of the Family Welfare Association of America in New York City, and in 1943 she wrote the New York Baby Book which was given to every new mother in the city. The Maurine Boie La Barre papers consists of professional publications, personal and academic papers.

Marianne Craig Moore papers, 1904-1991 (inclusive) 1905-1972 (bulk)

Abstract:
Marianne Craig Moore (1887-1972) was an award-winning modernist poet. She graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1909 with a B.A. in history, economics, and politics. The poet was published for the first time in 1915, and by 1920, her poetry was frequently featured in The Dial, a magazine that served as an outlet for modernist thought and art. From 1925-1929, Moore was editor of The Dial. During the 1930s and 1940s, she published her poetry in books and did freelance writing. The 1950s and 1960s brought Moore fame and recognition: her Collected Poems, published in 1951, won her the Bollingen Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, and the National Book Award. She was also the recipient of The National Medal for Literature, France's Croix de Chevalier, and sixteen honorary degrees. Margaret Hall Whitfield Papers, 1943-2013 (inclusive)

Margaret Rumsey Hall Whitfield (bornJune 23, 1933) was a 1955 graduate of Bryn Mawr College, did graduate work at Radcliffe and Harvard in Education in the late 1950s, and spent much of her life in either Concord or Great Barrington, Massachusetts, where she raised a family, raised and rode horses, managed businesses and property, and wrote. She was the daughter of Elizabeth Blodgett Hall, founder of Simon's Rock College, and Livingston Hall, who taught law at Harvard. The papers consist of her extensive notebooks of journal entries, correspondence, photographs, and writings documenting her life from high school at the Cambridge School in Weston, MA in 1947 to her move to California in the 2000s. Anne Poage Funkhouser, BMC Class of 1933, MA 1936 (in German), traveled extensively throughout her life. In her later years she published the two books which are represented here in draft: Voyage of Re-Discovery (1979) and Hieronimus Bosch (1980). Materials include Funkhouser's personal observations, citations of other published works in the field, photographs, and letters. The correspondence is principally concerned with matters regarding Funkhouser's published works. Some of the photographs are Funkhouser's original work, others are from other works and publications.

Abstract:
Richmond Lattimore (1906-1984) taught Greek at Bryn Mawr College from 1935-1971. While at Bryn Mawr, Lattimore frequently celebrated the college in verse, whether at faculty dinners, inaugurations, convocations, or in his personal poems. He published several volumes of original and translated poetry, critical works,translations, essays and collaborated with other scholars on works such as the "Hanover Poems" and "The Complete Greek Tragedies." The collection is divided into the following five sections: (1) Poetry; (2) Biblical and Classical Translations; (3) Articles, Essays, Lectures, and Reviews; (4) Correspondence and Works of Others; and (5) Miscellaneous Personal and Bryn Mawr Materials. They date from 1924-1984 but the bulk of materials are from 1950-1980.

Barbara Lane correspondence with German architects (1955-1982), 1955-1982 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Barbara Miller Lane is a former Professor at Bryn Mawr College who came in 1962 to teach history and later helped to develop the college's Growth and Structure of Cities Program in 1971. Lane is known for her research in 20th century German Architecture and Urban Planning. Her most notable published work is "Architecture and Politics in Germany, 1918-1945," (first published in 1968) which is considered the classic work on German architecture and planning in the early twentieth century. She was also a member of the "City Forum", an advisory group on planning Berlin after German unification. This collection includes of letters between Barbara Lane and various German architects written while she was researching her study on politics and architecture in Germany between the World Wars, and contains correspondence with notable German Architects such as Fritz Breuhaus de Groot, Albert Speer, and Walter Gropius.

Abstract:
Katharine Sergeant White, the first fiction editor of The New Yorker magazine, was born in Winchester, Massachusetts in 1892. In 1914, White graduated from Bryn Mawr College. She married her first husband, Ernest Angell in 1915, and with him she had two children, Nancy and Roger. After a divorce in 1929, Katharine married her second husband, New Yorker staff writer E. B. White. White's career at The New Yorker began in 1925 and continued until her retirement in 1961. As the first fiction editor of the magazine, White not only exerted an unparalleled influence on the course of the development of the magazine, but on contemporary American literature itself. This collection documents White's career at The New Yorker, the history of the magazine, and her retirement years in Maine, primarily through correspondence, her writings, and other materials.

Helen Herron Taft Manning (1891-1987) was the daughter of President of the United States William Howard Taft and his wife Helen Herron. This collection, which dates from 1861 to 1992, with bulk dates of 1915 to 1974, consists of correspondence, writings, clippings, and personal objects from the Manning family.

Elizabeth (Kelley) Burroughs is the granddaughter of the eminent late-19th to early-20th century naturalist-writer John Burroughs. She attended Bryn Mawr at the recommendation of the neighbor and family friend, Hilda Smith, who was then the Dean of Bryn Mawr. The Elizabeth (Kelley) Burroughs scrapbook collection is comprised of three scrapbooks created by Burroughs. The collection ranges from 1917-1985, with the bulk of the material being from 1922-26, and consists of much about undergraduate scholarships, the Christian Association, the Bates House, and other aspects of Bryn Mawr life in the 1920s.

Elmali Archaeological Collection, 1963-2009 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Elmali Archaeological Collection includes documents from a number of excavations conducted in the Elmali Plain of Lycia (Turkey): Karataş, Bağbaşi, Boztepe, Kizilbel, and Karaburun. The excavations were sponsored by Bryn Mawr College and directed by Machteld J. Mellink; the sites were excavated from 1963 to 1975. The excavations at Karataş, Bağbaşi, and Boztepe uncovered evidence of occupation at the sites from the Chalcolithic period through the Early Bronze Age, giving us a picture of domestic life during this time. At the sites of Kizilbel and Karaburun the team uncovered and conserved two painted chamber tombs in different artistic styles that are cited for their historical importance.

The Francis Bacon Foundation was formed by Walter and Louise Arensberg in 1938 to promote study in science, literature, religion, history and philosophy with special reference to the works of Francis Bacon. The Foundation also served as the legal owner of the Walter and Louise Arensberg art collection. The Francis Bacon Foundation Records consist of correspondence, administrative and financial records which illustrate the organizational aspects of the Foundation, the Baconian research conducted by its staff, and the art historical research conducted by outside researchers using the Francis Bacon Foundation Library and Arensberg Archives. Because of the Foundation's close association with Walter and Louise Arensberg, the Records also shed some light on their personal lives.

The Henry P. McIlhenny Papers document the privileged and urbane lifestyle of the man whose tastes and talents earned him a reputation as a distinguished connoisseur of art and antiques, world traveler, host extraordinaire, philanthropist and generous friend. Although Henry McIlhenny (1910-1986) is the primary creator, this collection is very much a family affair, encompassing the art collections initiated by his parents, John D. and Frances P. McIlhenny, which passed, along with the family trust fund, on to McIlhenny and his sister Bernice ("Bonnnie") Wintersteen. Much of the material deals with McIlhenny's activities from the mid-1930s to his final years, with particularly extensive documentation of his art collection and of his homes, the latter of which encompasses his penchant for interior design and his passion for horticulture. Dorothy Norman Research Collection, 1897-1992, undated (inclusive)

Abstract:
During her twenty-year relationship with photographer and art promoter Alfred Stieglitz, Dorothy Norman, herself a photographer as well as writer, came to know artists such as John Marin, who were defining American modernism during the 1930s and 1940s. Norman published and edited writings about both men, and likely compiled this material in preparation. Documentation pertaining to Alfred Stieglitz consists primarily of exhibition announcements and checklists, and copies of writings published by his gallery An American Place. Equally significant in amount are the copyprints of photographs by Stieglitz, and of works by artists he promoted, such as Georgia O'Keefe, Arthur G. Dove, John Marin and Marsden Hartley.
