Overview and metadata sections

Alice Beamsderfer is the Assistant Director for Collections and Project Support at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Following the unexpected death in June 2008 of Anne d'Harnoncourt, the Museum's Director and Chief Executive Office, Beamsderfer also was named Interim Head of Curatorial Affairs.

These records currently represent two legal transactions carried out on behalf of the Museum. The first series pertains to the Museum's 1984 acquisition of certain master European prints and drawings from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The materials comprising this series were the files maintained by the Philadelphia law firm of Obermayer, Rebmann, Maxwell and Hippel, which represented PMA in this matter. Files consists of correspondence, research and notes, clippings, inventories, and settlement and closing documents. The second series pertains to the Estate of John G. Johnson, whose art collection has been maintained by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and housed here since the 1930s. Comprising this series is a transcript of a hearing held January 2006 in Philadelphia's Court of Common Pleas. The purpose of the hearing was to seek relief against a stipulation in Johnson's 1917 will regarding investments.

These materials were arranged and described by Bertha Adams in 2009. Funded by a grant from The Institute of Museum and Library Services.
