Horace G. Richards papers, 1928-1984 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Horace G. Richards (1906-1984) was a geologist at the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia and an authority on the geologic formations of the Atlantic coastal plain. His research specialty focused on geology and paleontology of the Quaternary Period (approximately the past 1.8 million years), but his research interests also included Cenozoic mollusca, and marine Pleistocene geology and paleontology of the Atlantic coastal plain. Additionally, he studied climate change and coastal shorelines, which required extensive fieldwork, taking him all over the world. Richards was also an adjunct professor at two universities and frequently guest lectured at various institutions. The Horace G. Richards papers document various aspects of his professional career, from his graduate education at the University of Pennsylvania to his retirement from the multiple positions he held. Abstract:
George F. Sproule (1867-1928), known as an authority on the Port of Philadelphia, served on the Board of Port Wardens of Philadelphia from 1884 to 1907, as Secretary of the Board of Commissioners of Navigation for the Delaware River from 1907 to 1920, and as Director of Wharves, Docks and Ferries from 1920 to 1928. His son, Samuel Jackson Sproule served as Port Representative for the United States Shipping Administration, Recruitment and Manning Organization during World War II. This collection documents the professional life of George F. Sproule in the Philadelphia shipping and maritime industry in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the history of the Port of Philadelphia, and the World War II career of his son. The collection includes clippings, correspondence, appointment books, a scrapbook, business records, photographs, ephemera, and writings. The collection also includes a large number of maritime-related newspaper clipping volumes dating from 1891 to 1928.

Abstract:
The Gotham Book Mart (1920-2006) was one of New York City's most iconic bookstores during the 20th century. Founded by Frances Steloff (1887-1989), the daughter of poor Russian-Jewish immigrants, the Book Mart became a social center for the New York literati and a focal point for literary modernism in the United States. Steloff's successor, independent literary manuscript dealer Andreas Brown (1933-), maintained the store's focus on avant garde and small press publications while incorporating his own interests in postcards and genealogy. This collection contains 91 boxes of material relating to the daily operation of the Book Mart; correspondence, biographical, and legal material from both Brown and Steloff; postcard and genealogical material collected by Brown; photographs of the store, its employees, and events which took place there; and manuscripts and ephemera offered for sale.

Henry Vaux photograph albums of India, 1911-1929 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Major Henry George Vaux (1883-1957) was a military secretary in the British Army, posted in India. He served as Aide de Camp to Lord Carmichael who served as Governor of Victoria from 1908 to 1911, Governor of Madras from 1911 to 1912, and Governor of Bengal from 1912 to 1914. Major Vaux also served under Lord Ronaldshay, Lord Lytton and Lord Sykes. He was named Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire in 1921 by King George the V. Major Vaux ended his career as a Lieutenant Colonel. The five volumes of photographs capture the luxurious style and activities present in the lives of the highest ranking British military posted to India, and their families, in the early part of the 20th century. The subject of many photographs are the leisure activities enjoyed by this group – horse races, polo, hunting, tennis – as well as ceremonial events such as visits of kings, queens and dignitaries of all kind. S.A. Wheeler may have been a Scottish member of the British Air Force posted in India during World War II. The Second Lancers, established in 1809 by William Linnaeus Gardner (1770-1835), was a cavalry regiment in the British Indian Army. It is probable that the creator of this album was a British or Indian officer who served with the Second Lancers between 1909 and 1913. For the most part, military life is not documented--instead the volume consists of formal portraits of British and Indian soldiers; candid photographs of soldiers; portraits of horses; and photographs of a trip to England, equine sports in India (including racing and polo), and a trip to Delhi for the Delhi Durbar held in December 1911 to commemorate the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary as Emperor and Empress of India.

In 1937 Japan invaded the Republic of China, setting in motion the Second Sino-Japanese War, the largest Asian war in the 20th century and the beginning of the larger Pacific War (the Asian theater of World War II). This album contains photographs taken by a heavy machine gunner in the Japanese Imperial Army during the Second Sino-Japanese war. The photographs include posed group shots from army training, less formal group shots taken in the field, and is especially notable for its action shots from the battlefield, as well as candid photographs of military travel and camp life.

This photograph album consists of thirty-one original black and white photographs documenting Sudanese culture and the changes the British brought to the country during the period of Anglo-Egyptian occupation. Included are views of Halfa, Kassala, Sennar, Khartoum (including government buildings, Gordon College, Kitchener Memorial Medical School, the Grand Hotel Khartoum, and Khartoum Palace), Omdurman, Suakin, and Port Sudan, all of which are situated along the Sudan government railways. There are also several images documenting the Gezira scheme, the Sennar irrigation dam, and indigenous peoples harvesting wheat and cotton.

Fritz Solmitz (1893-1933) was an early and outspoken leader in the opposition to Nazism, an editor of a Social Democratic newspaper in Lübeck and a member of the City council. Because of his active opposition to the Nazis, and probably because he was a Jew, he died of mistreatment in a German prison shortly after Hitler came to power. Karoline Somitz (1893-1966) was, like her husband, active in civic affairs. Much of the collection contains letters and photographs, some translated from German.

Marvin Rosefield Keck, (1895-1971) was a musician who served in World War I in Admiral Niblack’s Flagship Band of the Mediterranean Fleet on the Flagship Olympia. The Marvin Rosefield Keck papers, which date from 1916 to 1972, consists of newspaper clippings, correspondence, diaries, drawings, photographs, scrapbooks, and unpublished writings. The collection covers Keck's experience in World War I as a band member in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Olympia and his experience in the American Legion band in South Dakota after World War I.

Margaret Naumburg (1890–1983) was an American psychologist, educator, artist, and author. She was one of the first proponents of art therapy and utilitzed art as a method for both diagnosis and therapy. Thomas Sovereign Gates, Jr. papers, 1902-1987 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Thomas Sovereign Gates, Jr., was a lieutenant commander in the United States Navy during World War II, who went on to serve as the Secretary of the Navy (1957-1959), Secretary of Defense (1959-1961), and Ambassador to China (1976-1977). As a civilian he also pursued a career in investment banking at the Morgan Guaranty Trust Company (later J.P. Morgan & Co.). Gates' personal papers focus largely on his government service, with a small amount of additional personal items. Included are many military and government documents and correspondence with influential politicians--perhaps most notably with President Dwight D. Eisenhower, under who Gates served as both Secretary of the Navy and Secretary of Defense. The collection also includes many clippings and photographs that have been assembled into a remarkable collection of scrapbooks that bring Gates' service to life.

Abstract:
Robert H. Nones (1864-1936) was professor of prosthetic dentistry, dental metallurgy, crown and bridge work, and clinical dentistry at the Medico-Chirurgical College of Philadelphia and served as the dean of the Department of Dentistry at the college from 1898 to 1906. His papers include lecture notes, his thesis, and a scrapbook documenting the Stomatological Club of Philadelphia.

Abstract:
Katharine "Kay" E. Reichert was an Air Force nurse who served with the Far East Air Force in Japan during the Korean War. After her return to the United States, Reichert earned her B.S. in Nursing Education from the University of Pennsylvania and then her M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. The bulk of this collection is comprised of photo albums and scrapbooks documenting daily life and excursions to destinations around Japan. Also included are official and personal papers and ephemera, yearbooks from Reichert's studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and artifacts such as medical bag and equipment, military insignias and honors, and door signs.

Abstract:
LeRoy M. Ennis (1893-1978) was a dentist and a professor at the University of Pennsylvania focusing on the study of roentgenology (radiation) and oral surgery. In 1951, he was a member of the United States Dental Commission which visited Osaka Dental College in Japan, an effort to aid dentists in that country. This collection documents Japanese dentistry in the 1930s to 1951 through photographs and includes publications about the practice of dentistry and dental education in Japan, many of which were produced prior to the trip.
