Overview and metadata sections
Robert H. Nones was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1864 and remained in Philadelphia until his death in 1936. After graduating from the Philadelphia Dental College in 1885, Nones went on to be a professor of prosthetic dentistry, dental metallurgy, crown and bridge work, and clinical dentistry at the Medico-Chirurgical College of Philadelphia. He was the dean of the Department of Dentistry at the college from 1898 to 1906. His father, Samuel Smith Nones, and his son, Robert H. Nones Jr. were also dentists.
Dr. Nones' thesis, "Nones, Robert H. [Orthodontia] Thesis:…to the faculty of the Phila Dental College 1885. Manuscript," consists of fifteen handwritten pages. Two volumes of Nones' lecture notes date from October 5, 1897 to April 14, 1898 and from October 4, 1898 to April 17, 1899. The first volume relates to prosthetic dentistry and the second volume relates to crown and bridge work. These notes contain Nones' plans for his lectures to be given at the Medico-Chirurgical College of Philadelphia, Department of Dentistry (eventually absorbed by Penn Medicine). Lectures varied from technical to more philosophical; examples of lecture include the "Mechanic Preparation of Roots" lecture and the "Furnishing the Laboratory." Also included is a photograph album from the Stomatological Club of Philadelphia. This album lists the founding members, and contains portraits and group photographs of members. Photographs in the album date from 1898 to 1906 and some contain captions identifying the person or event, the date, or the location. Founding members include Isaac Norman Broomell, Albert P. Brubaker, Artemus W. Deane, John M. Fogg, Frank V. Gardiner, Leo Greenbaum, Henry B. McFadden, John V. Mershon, Robert H. Nones, Henry C. Register, Howard S. Roberts, George F. Root, and Charles P. Shoemaker.
