Massachusetts Peace Society Records, 1816-1917 (inclusive) 1911-1917 (bulk)

Abstract:
The Massachusetts Peace Society was first formed in 1815, and a new organization reformed in 1911. The records of both groups have been combined here to form one archival collection. The Massachusetts Peace Society (MPS)was the second [third?] such society to form in America on December 28, 1815, organized primarily by Noah Worcester (1758-1837), a Unitarian minister. By 1819 the MPS had over 850 members, with branches established throughout the state and beyond. The MPS merged, into the newly formed American Peace Society in May 1828. A new Massachusetts Peace Society was reorganized on April 27, 1911, with Samuel B. Capen as President and James Tryon as Secretary. It was possibly a branch of the American Peace Society. World War I put an end to the activities of the MPS.

Collected Document Groups (CDGs) are collections for which the Swarthmore College Peace Collection has only some material from the organizations and individuals, collected by various entities through the years. In a small number of cases, the SCPC is the official repository for a CDG, but it was not given Document Group (DG) status because of the limited amount of material, or because it does not reflect the donor's full activities. Collected Document Group: Category B (CDG-B) consists of organizations or individuals based outside of the United States.

International Peace Society Collected Records, 1817-1948 (bulk)

Abstract:
The Society for the Promotion of Universal and Permanent Peace, also known as the London Peace Society, was founded June 14, 1816. Members were primarily Protestant, especially Quaker. Although its official platform was based on an absolutist pacifist stance, its members included peace workers who did not accept the full pacifist position. By 1930 it had taken the name of International Peace Society, having become incorporated with the International Christian Peace Fellowship.

Joshua P. Blanchard Collected Papers, 1819-1868 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Joshua Pollard Blanchard was born in 1782. His "Quaker" principles led him into being an important nineteenth century peace leader (and abolitionist). Blanchard was an absolute pacifist who was a conscientious objector during the war of 1812, and was tried in New York. He joined the Massachusetts Peace Society in 1816 and was very active for many years in the American Peace Society (APSl).

Abstract:
Bulk of the collection is in printed or mimeographed form, with some typed or photocopied items also present. Included are pamphlets, tracts, leaflets, articles and reprints, reports, speeches, statements, form letters, announcements and papers relating to conferences and other meetings, and clippings. The collection was microfilmed in 1979. In 2003, a large amount of material duplicated elsewhere in the Peace Collection was removed, so that the material in the boxes no longer corresponds to the material on the microfilm. Primary source material was transferred to the appropriate record group in Friends Historical Library. Primary source material on the microfilm includes: minutes and reports (1887-1915) of the Whitewater (Indiana) Quarterly Meeting Peace Committee; correspondence (1897-1900) of William Wood, chairman of the Baltimore Yearly Meeting Committee on Peace and Arbitration; correspondence and form letters (1916-1931) of Edward Thomas, chairman of the New York Yearly...(see more)

Anna Garlin Spencer Papers, 1830-1931 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Anna Carpenter Garlin Spencer was a minister, feminist, educator, pacifist, and writer on ethics and social problems. Spencer was the first woman in Rhode Island to be ordained and served as the minister of the Bell Street Chapel from 1891 to 1902. Spencer was active in the cause of women's rights for more than forty years and served as the president of the Rhode Island Equal Suffrage Association. Spencer's interest in pacifism also led her to prominent positions with the National Peace and Arbitration Congress in 1907 and she was a founding member of the Woman's Peace Party in 1915, serving as vice chairman. She also became the first chairman of the national board of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom in 1919. Spencer died at her home in New York in 1931.

Hannah Johnston Bailey was a Quaker pacifist, suffragist, reformer,temperance leader, superintendent of the Department of Peace and Arbitration of the National Woman's Christian Temperance Union from 1887 to 1916, president and business manager of the Woman's Temperance Publication Association, the publishing arm of the WCTU, president of the Maine Woman Suffrage Association (1891-1899), and a member of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Included in her papers is material that reflects her personal and professional interests through correspondence and published/unpublished writings, as well as photographs and memorabilia.

Elihu Burritt Papers, 1840-1965 (inclusive) 1841-1878 (bulk)

Abstract:
Elihu Burritt was born on December 10, 1810, in New Britain, Connecticut, into a working class family. He attended school briefly, but was largely self-educated. Burritt became a blacksmith to support himself, but he continued to study languages at night. Word of his erudition spread; he became known as the "Learned Blacksmith", and was offered opportunities to speak in public. While writing a lecture on "The Anatomy of the Earth", he was so impressed by the interdependency of its parts that he ended with a plea for international peace. This became his lifelong passion. He became acquainted with other social reformers and began his career as a prophet for peace.

Abstract:
Emily Greene Balch (1867-1961) was the second U.S. woman to have won the Nobel Peace Prize. Balch embarked on her academic career in the economics and sociology department at Wellesley College. Balch's extracurricular work with the Women's Trade Union League and opposition to World War I resulted in dismissal from Wellesley, and thereafter she helped lead the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. Called a "Citizen of the World," Balch worked for peace throughout her life--through disarmament; internationalization of important waterways, aviation, and the polar regions; drug control; and the elimination of the causes of discontent and conflict among peoples.

From the Women of Philadelphia U.S.A. in Answer to the Friendly Address of the Women of Exeter, England, on the Subject of Peace, 1846

Abstract:
Handwritten draft of a reply to an address from women of Exeter, England, in response to their plea urging their American sisters to help prevent war between England and the United States. This draft, of which the final version no longer exists, warns that a mother could sow the seed of blood-thirsty ambition in her son "when in his childish hours she gave him tiny weapons, and taught him how to mimic war's murderous game." Signed by Lucretia Mott. The reply, which was sent to England and is now lost, was signed by 3,525 Philadelphia women. Friendly Addresses were inspired by Joseph Crosfield, an English Quaker, and Elihu Burritt, an American, to promote friendship between the United States and Great Britain on a person-to-person level. To the Women of the City of Philadelphia, and of the United States Generally, the Friendly Address of the Undersigned Women Inhabitants of the City of Exeter in England, 1846

Abstract:
Handwritten address; a plea, dated 28th of April 1846, signed by 1623 English women, invoking a common ancestry and urging their American sisters to unite with them "in using the influence we possess, which is not powerless though exerted chiefly around the domestic hearth." The exchange was prompted due to tensions between England and the United States known as the "Oregon Question" a boundary dispute resulting from competing claims to the Pacific Northwest territory. Friendly Addresses were inspired by Joseph Crosfield, an English Quaker, and Elihu Burritt, an American, to promote friendship between the United States and Great Britain on a person-to-person level. He died suddenly in 1992 at the age of 68.

Helen Mears Papers, 1862-1981 (inclusive) 1935-1955 (bulk)

Abstract:
Helen Mears was a writer and journalist, especially interested in Japan and Asia. Mears first traveled to China in 1925 and ten years later Mears spent nine months in Japan. Out of the trip to Japan she published two books and a series of essays that appeared in The New Yorker. Mears traveled throughout Asia, the Soviet Union, Europe, and parts of South America. After World War II Mears traveled again to Japan served in an official capacity as a member of the U.S. labor advisory committee. From the 1950s through the 1960s Mears wrote occasional articles on southeast Asia, critiquing European and U.S. involvement there. Mears was a board member of the War Resisters League in the 1950s and worked against the H-Bomb. Helen Mears published several books on Japan. These include: Mirror for Americans, Japan, Boston : Houghton Mifflin Co., 1948; Year of the Wild Boar: an American Woman in Japan in 1947.

Anna B. Eckstein Collected Papers, 1886-1944 (bulk)

Abstract:
Born in Coburg, Germany, Anna B. Eckstein eventually became a naturalized American citizen and joined the Boston [Massachusetts] Peace Society. She became an ardent champion of world peace and gave numerous lectures and wrote many articles on peace problems of the United States and of Europe. Eckstein was a vice-president of the American Peace Society (1905-1911), and an honorary member of the Liberal Christian League in London and of many other social and education societies. She collected signatures for "The World Petition to Prevent War Between Nations" for The Hague Conventions. Eckstein had begun to prepare another petition for the 3rd Hague Conference for which she had some 6 million signatures when her efforts were ended by the advent of World War I. Her manuscript "The Will to Power Harmonized" was refused publication by Nazi authorities.

Jessie Wallace Hughan (December 25, 1875 – April 10, 1955) was an American educator, social activist, and a radical pacifist. During her college days she was one of four co-founders of Alpha Omicron Pi, a national sorority for university women. She also was a founder and the first Secretary of the War Resisters League, established in 1923. For over two decades, she was a perennial candidate for political office on the ticket of the Socialist Party of America in her home state of New York.

Edwin D. Mead and Lucia Ames Mead Papers, 1876-1938 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Edwin D. Mead (1849-1937), and Lucia Ames Mead (1856-1936), were both leading pacifists, writers, and social reformers of the U.S. and international peace movement. Edwin Mead directed the work of the World Peace Foundation and participated in many international peace congresses. He was an American delegate to the International Peace Bureau. Mead helped found the School Peace League and was a prominent member of the American Peace League. Lucia Ames Mead was a leading member of many feminist and pacifist organizations, including the Woman's Peace Party. Mead was a delegate to the founding conference of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom in 1919 and served as a vice-president on the board of the National Council for Prevention of War. She was also an officer of the National Council of Women of the United States, and was a member of many U.S. feminist associations.

Abstract:
Belva Ann McNall Lockwood (1830-1917), was the first woman attorney to practice before the Supreme Court. She personally lobbied members of Congress to pass a special act admitting women to the bar of the Court, and first practiced before the Court in 1879. Lockwood ran for the U.S. presidency in 1884 and 1888, being the first woman to have a complete, national campaign for that office. From the 1870s onward Lockwood was active with the radical peace group, the Universal Peace Union, representing the organization at several international peace congresses.

Priscilla Hannah Peckover (1833-1931) devoted much of her life toward mobilization for peace. In 1879 she formed the Wisbech Peace Association to promote the development of women in work for peace. This group of men and women became a center for peace activity in Great Britain. They concentrated on establishing peace by means of arbitration and disarmament, based on Christian theology.

Mildred Scott Olmsted Papers, 1881-1990 (inclusive) 1907-1990 (bulk)

Abstract:
Mildred Scott Olmsted, peace activist and suffragist, was born in Glenolden, Pennsylvania, in 1890. In 1922, Olmsted became Executive Secretary of the Pennsylvania Branch of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF). From 1934 onward she assumed national positions with the organization. In 1946, Olmsted became National Administrative Secretary and held that position (until her retirement in 1966. She remained active as Executive Director Emerita of WILPF and also served on its International Executive Committee from 1937 until 1953. Mildred Scott married Allen S. Olmsted, II, in 1921 and the couple had one child and adopted two more. Mildred Scott Olmsted died in 1990 at the age of 99.

Abstract:
Bertha von Suttner was an Austrian peace activist and intellectual, and the author of one of the first international bestselling novels focused on peace ("Lay Down Your Arms") published in 1891. In her life-long correspondence on peace matters with Alfred Nobel she urged him to establish a prize for peace. Von Suttner was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905, the first woman to be thus recognized.

Elkinton Family Doukhobor Papers, 1884- (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Doukhobors are a pacifist sect. They originated in Russia but were forced to emigrate to Canada in 1898 due to their refusal to bear arms for the Tsar. In the late 1930s their leader, Peter P. Verigin, created an organization known as the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ, also known as the Orthodox Doukhobors, which has maintained the tradition of Doukhobor cultural activities. The Elkinton Family, a prominent Philadelphia (Pa.) Quaker family, and other members of the Society of Friends in Canada and the United States have offered moral and material assistance to the Doukhobors because of the connection of their beliefs in pacifism and simplicity.
