Abstract:

Frank O. Wargny's 1947 master's thesis at John Hopkins University, entitled "Education of the Freedmen by Baltimore Quakers during the Civil War and Reconstruction Period," describes the efforts of Philadelphia and Baltimore area Quakers to provide education to freed slaves during and after the Civil War. It provides a brief history of Philadelphia area Quakers' abolition efforts prior to the Civil War, including the work of Benezet and Woolman, but the majority of the manuscript focuses on the years during the Civil War and Reconstruction. The volume includes the following chapters: Preliminaries, Efforts of Philadelphia Orthodox Friends, Efforts of Philadelphia Hicksite Friends, The Baltimore Association for the moral and educational Improvement of the Colored People, and Teaching the Freedmen.

Abstract:

According to the note on the inside cover of "Essays in Prose and Verse," the essays and poetry inside were written by Samuel Morris when he was 13, and again later when he was a student at Haverford College in 1843. This volume is a copy of the original, and is copied by Beulah S. Morris, who wrote this copy as a gift for her father, on his 55th birthday, in 1846. The volume is largely comprised of poetry, but also includes short stories and personal essays related to family, nature, travel, and religion.

Daisy Newman's novel, "Indian Summer of the Heart," is the sequel to "I take thee, Serenity," and focuses on two entwined love stories. The first story is that of the continuing story of Peter and Serenity Holland, married at the end of the earlier book, as they face the difficult stresses of building two careers while also trying to meet the needs of Ross, their little boy. The other love story is that of Oliver Otis, a 78 year old widower, and Peter and Serenity's mentor, and Loveday Mead, who has come to the little Quaker village of Kendal. Both stories focus on the difficulties that stem from the pressures of modern life and the effect of the influence of Quakerism on the lives of the characters.
