Abstract:

According to the note on the inside cover of "Essays in Prose and Verse," the essays and poetry inside were written by Samuel Morris when he was 13, and again later when he was a student at Haverford College in 1843. This volume is a copy of the original, and is copied by Beulah S. Morris, who wrote this copy as a gift for her father, on his 55th birthday, in 1846. The volume is largely comprised of poetry, but also includes short stories and personal essays related to family, nature, travel, and religion.

Samuel Morris (1827-1905) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Quakers Samuel Buckley Morris and Hannah Perot Morris. Samuel Morris matriculated at Haverford College in 1845, then went on to learn farming. He married Lydia Spencer in 1853. Morris was recorded a minister in the Society of Friends in 1864. In 1876, he made a religious mission to visit North American Indigenous peoples, later embarking on a similar mission to Europe and Australia. He was president of the managers of Friends Asylum from 1888-1902.

Beulah Sansom Morris (1829-1923) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Quakers Samuel Buckley Morris and Hannah Perot Morris, and the sister of Samuel Morris. She married Charles Rhoads in 1870, and the couple had one child together, Mary Rhoads (1871-1872). Beulah Morris died in Camden County, New Jersey, in 1923.

This collection is comprised of the single volume, "Essays in Prose and Verse," originally written by Samuel Morris.
