Abstract:
Zelma Corning Brandt (1891-1990) was a social crusader active throughout the twentieth century. Her chief interests included the independence and development of colonial countries, American Indian affairs, nuclear disarmament, women's issues, and geriatric concerns. The collection consists of correspondence, travel notes, diaries and writings, and publications and reports, especially from 1960-1989. Brandt's longevity and attention to detail provide a complete view of various world and domestic issues and events through this period. Zelma Brandt attended Bryn Mawr College from 1909 to 1911.

Abstract:
Lucy Evans Chew graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1918. Shortly after her graduation, she married Samuel Chew, an English professor at Bryn Mawr. For the majority of their married life, the Chews remained in the area surrounding Bryn Mawr. The Lucy Evans Chew Collection is primarily comprised of 58 volumes of her diaries from the years from 1920 to 1968. The diaries include descriptions of her daily life, her association with the college, her travels, and her reflections on her life.

Chinese Scholarship Committee records, 1916-1988 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Chinese Scholarship Committee was established by Professor Lucy Martin Donnelly in 1916, to provide Chinese women an education who could not otherwise obtain one in China. It was also intended to "deepen the understanding between China and the United States by bringing to this country the type of students who would represent the highest Chinese traditions, and who would in turn interpret to China our western civilization" ("Bryn Mawr Chinese Scholarship Committee," pamphlet). The fund, as established, provided for one annual scholarship to a Chinese woman who wished to attend Bryn Mawr College. The Chinese Scholarship Committee records documents the efforts of Bryn Mawr College diverisify its student body and to introduce to its students a different culture. The collection houses scattered financial and administrative records, as well as a nice body of correspondence from and about the Chinese students who directly benfitted from the fund. Theodore de Laguna (1876-1930) was a professor of philosophy at Bryn Mawr College for 23 years and an author. The Theodore de Laguna collection, dating from 1896 to 1989, contains diverse writings and annotated books by de Laguna. This collection focuses mainly on de Laguna's manuscripts, off prints, and poetry, but also contains original musical arrangements, annotated works by others, and correspondence regarding de Laguna's death in 1930.

Abstract:
Constance Grenelle Wilcox, Bryn Mawr Class of 1917, was a successful playwright and novelist. Some of Wilcox's written works include: Pan Pipes (1919), The Princess in the Fairy Tale (1919) and Told in a Chinese Garden (1932). The Constance Grenelle Wilcox papers include her unpublished manuscript, The Unsophisticate. The papers also include a series of other unpublished plays and children's stories. There is also correspondence in the collection.

Fritz and Karoline Solmitz papers, 1929-2006 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Fritz Solmitz (1893-1933) was an early and outspoken leader in the opposition to Nazism, an editor of a Social Democratic newspaper in Lübeck and a member of the City council. Because of his active opposition to the Nazis, and probably because he was a Jew, he died of mistreatment in a German prison shortly after Hitler came to power. Karoline Somitz (1893-1966) was, like her husband, active in civic affairs. Much of the collection contains letters and photographs, some translated from German.

H.D. and Bryher papers, 1916-1972 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The poet and philhellenist H.D. (Hilda Doolittle) was born in 1886 in Bethlehem, PA. Around 1895, the Doolittle family moved from the Moravian community in Bethlehem to Upper Darby. While living in Pennsylvania, H.D. met fellow poets Ezra Pound, to whom she was briefly engaged, and William Carlos Williams. Both of the young men were students at the University of Pennyslvania, where Hilda's father was a professor of astronomy. She began attending Bryn Mawr College in 1905 as a day student and made the acquaintance of fellow students Marianne Moore and Mary Herr. After three semesters, H.D. withdrew from college. Her motives for leaving are not clear, although the catalyst may have been illness, poor grades, or her relationship with Ezra Pound. Years later she would write to Mary Herr (1959 July 19) that she was "practically invisible" at the college. The collection consists of one box of material, divided into two categories: Correspondence and Miscellaneous Materials.

Maurine Boie La Barre Papers, 1863-1989 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Maurine Boie La Barre received her B.S. from the University of Minnesota in 1927, did graduate work in English there 1927-1928, and received her M.A. in Sociology there in 1932. She received her M.S.W. from Bryn Mawr in 1937 and did further work at the Pennsylvania School of Social Work. During the late 1930s and early 1940s, she was editor-inchief of The Family, journal of the Family Welfare Association of America in New York City, and in 1943 she wrote the New York Baby Book which was given to every new mother in the city. The Maurine Boie La Barre papers consists of professional publications, personal and academic papers.

Marianne Craig Moore papers, 1904-1991 (inclusive) 1905-1972 (bulk)

Abstract:
Marianne Craig Moore (1887-1972) was an award-winning modernist poet. She graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1909 with a B.A. in history, economics, and politics. The poet was published for the first time in 1915, and by 1920, her poetry was frequently featured in The Dial, a magazine that served as an outlet for modernist thought and art. From 1925-1929, Moore was editor of The Dial. During the 1930s and 1940s, she published her poetry in books and did freelance writing. The 1950s and 1960s brought Moore fame and recognition: her Collected Poems, published in 1951, won her the Bollingen Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, and the National Book Award. She was also the recipient of The National Medal for Literature, France's Croix de Chevalier, and sixteen honorary degrees. Margaret Trumbull Corwin papers #, 1912-1971

Abstract:
Margaret Trumbull Corwin (1889-1983) received an A.B. degree from Bryn Mawr College in 1912 with a major in French and a minor in German. After graduation she worked at Yale University Press until 1919. In 1916 she took a leave of absence to work as executive secretary to the Connecticut Women's Committee of the Council of National Defense in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1919 Corwin went to France with the YMCA and was stationed in Beaune at the American Expeditionary Forces University. Upon her return, Corwin served as executive secretary of the Yale University Graduate School from 1919 until 1934. In 1934 she was appointed dean of New Jersey College for Women (part of Rutgers University), now Douglass College. She held this position for twenty-one years, until her retirement in 1955. The material in this collection consists mostly of copies of letters home, photographs, various notes, and printed material. It is an odds-and-ends collection. Abstract:
Richmond Lattimore (1906-1984) taught Greek at Bryn Mawr College from 1935-1971. While at Bryn Mawr, Lattimore frequently celebrated the college in verse, whether at faculty dinners, inaugurations, convocations, or in his personal poems. He published several volumes of original and translated poetry, critical works,translations, essays and collaborated with other scholars on works such as the "Hanover Poems" and "The Complete Greek Tragedies." The collection is divided into the following five sections: (1) Poetry; (2) Biblical and Classical Translations; (3) Articles, Essays, Lectures, and Reviews; (4) Correspondence and Works of Others; and (5) Miscellaneous Personal and Bryn Mawr Materials. They date from 1924-1984 but the bulk of materials are from 1950-1980.

Abstract:
Clara Cary Case Edwards was a graduate of Bryn Mawr College (class of 1904). She married Cecil Edwards, a worker for The Oriental Carpet Manufacturers Ltd. and the author of "The Persian Carpet: A Survey of the Carpet Weaving Industry of Persia" (1953). Clara and her husband traveled throughout the Middle East; they spent several years living in Iran where Clara spent a period of time teaching at The American Boys' School at Hamadan. This collection primarily consists of letters between Clara in her family, and private journals. They describe her everyday life in Iran, including housekeeping, cooking, and childcare, as well as details about the American and European community in Iran as well as the local native community. Her papers also describe conditions in Iran during World War I.

Carrie Chapman Catt papers, 1840-1947 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Carrie Lane Chapman Catt (1859-1947) was an internationally recognized suffragist, and political activist. In 1900 Catt succeeded Susan B. Anthony as President of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, and remained in the position for four years. Catt founded the International Woman Suffrage Alliance in 1902 and served as its president for many years. During the 1930's and 1940's she was active in working against the Nazis, particularly their persecution of Jews. The Carrie Chapman Catt Papers focus on the history of the women's suffrage movement, with material pertaining both directly to her and to the movement as a whole, and consists of a variety of materials including letters, photographs, political cartoons and memorabilia.

Caroline Wells Healey Dall papers, 1811-1945 (inclusive) 1845-1912 (bulk)

Abstract:
Caroline Wells Healey Dall (1822-1912) was a writer, lecturer, and women's rights advocate, especially in education. Some of her most well-known works include Margaret and Her Friends (1895) and Transcendentalism in New England (1897), which were greatly influenced by Margaret Fuller, and one of her many lectures, "The College, the Market, and the Court, or Women's Relation to Education, Labor, and Law" (1867). When her husband Charles Henry Appleton Dall, a Unitarian minister, left the United States for missionary work in Calcutta, India in 1885 until his death in 1886, Dall became even more active in women's rights by contributing to women's rights conventions in Boston. Dall was a founding and active member of the American Social Science Association.

Katharine Sergeant White, the first fiction editor of The New Yorker magazine, was born in Winchester, Massachusetts in 1892. In 1914, White graduated from Bryn Mawr College. She married her first husband, Ernest Angell in 1915, and with him she had two children, Nancy and Roger. After a divorce in 1929, Katharine married her second husband, New Yorker staff writer E. B. White. White's career at The New Yorker began in 1925 and continued until her retirement in 1961. As the first fiction editor of the magazine, White not only exerted an unparalleled influence on the course of the development of the magazine, but on contemporary American literature itself. This collection documents White's career at The New Yorker, the history of the magazine, and her retirement years in Maine, primarily through correspondence, her writings, and other materials.

Rita Rubenstein Heller, a Bryn Mawr College graduate of the Class of 1959 was a co-producer of the award-winning documentary "Women of Summer: A History of the Bryn Mawr Summer School for Women Workers, 1921-1935." Heller also directed "Chanceman's Brothers & Sisters: The Origins of the 20th Century Morris County Black Community." The collection consists of material from the Bryn Mawr Summer School for Women Workers in Industry, a two-month program on the Bryn Mawr campus designed to educate one hundred women workers. The school was in operation from 1921 to 1938 (excluding 1935).

Helen Herron Taft Manning (1891-1987) was the daughter of President of the United States William Howard Taft and his wife Helen Herron. This collection, which dates from 1861 to 1992, with bulk dates of 1915 to 1974, consists of correspondence, writings, clippings, and personal objects from the Manning family.

Elizabeth (Kelley) Burroughs is the granddaughter of the eminent late-19th to early-20th century naturalist-writer John Burroughs. She attended Bryn Mawr at the recommendation of the neighbor and family friend, Hilda Smith, who was then the Dean of Bryn Mawr. The Elizabeth (Kelley) Burroughs scrapbook collection is comprised of three scrapbooks created by Burroughs. The collection ranges from 1917-1985, with the bulk of the material being from 1922-26, and consists of much about undergraduate scholarships, the Christian Association, the Bates House, and other aspects of Bryn Mawr life in the 1920s.

Julia Harned Pardee letters, 1935-1936 (bulk)

Abstract:
Julia Pardee (nee Harned) was a member of Bryn Mawr's class of 1939. While at college, she was highly interested in all campus dramatic activities, and was also involved in Glee Club and the creation of the yearbook. Post-graduation, she attended Yale University Drama School, attaining a MFA in Drama Production. After the World War II, she became a member of the faculty in the Department of Theatre and Dance at SUNY-Buffalo, where she taught from 1946 until her retirement in 1984. She was especially interested in women in theater and created the first curriculum at SUNY-Buffalo to center on this subject. Pardee died December 9th, 1989. The Julia Harned (Pardee) letters house Pardee's personal correspondence. The bulk of these letters, often addressed to her mother or father, are from her first year at Bryn Mawr (October 1935- May 1936). The Hetty Goldman Collection is a small collection of photographs, correspondence, and other documents relevant to Hetty Goldman—pioneering archaeologist, classicist, scholar—whose excavations in the first half of the twentieth expanded the knowledge of the ancient past in the Mediterranean region. The strength of the collection is in several unpublished photographs of Hetty Goldman from the early twentieth century, correspondence, and the typed text of a speech that she delivered at Bryn Mawr College in 1955.

This collection contains the official documents and letters, as well as personal memorabilia, correspondence, and photo albums (bulk dates from 1907-1960s) of Helen Taft Manning and Frederick Manning. Helen Herron Taft Manning, daughter of President William Howard Taft and Helen Herron Taft, graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1915. She was named Dean of Bryn Mawr College in 1917, and became acting President in 1919. After obtaining a doctorate in history from Yale University, she returned to Byrn Mawr in 1925 as Dean and Professor of History. She married Frederick Johnson Manning in 1920, a former Yale graduate who then took up a position as a professor in the History Department at Swarthmore College in 1925. The materials in this collection shed light on the life and career of both Helen and Frederick Manning, by means of the extensive personal and professional documents they shared with each other as well as their various family members and colleagues. Mary Curran (1885-1976) devoted most of her professional life to some of the most progressive practices in social reform and relief during the first half of the 20th century. Her papers primarily document the significant role she played in the education of young working women, which segued into the promotion of modern art in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the management of the federal relief programs for artists in that state during most of the 1930s. The material is arranged in four series: I. Working women's clubs; II. New Students League and the Little Gallery of Contemporary Art; III. Federal Art Project and earlier relief programs; and IV. Personal papers. The Francis Bacon Foundation was formed by Walter and Louise Arensberg in 1938 to promote study in science, literature, religion, history and philosophy with special reference to the works of Francis Bacon. The Foundation also served as the legal owner of the Walter and Louise Arensberg art collection. The Francis Bacon Foundation Records consist of correspondence, administrative and financial records which illustrate the organizational aspects of the Foundation, the Baconian research conducted by its staff, and the art historical research conducted by outside researchers using the Francis Bacon Foundation Library and Arensberg Archives. Because of the Foundation's close association with Walter and Louise Arensberg, the Records also shed some light on their personal lives.

Abstract:
The Henry P. McIlhenny Papers document the privileged and urbane lifestyle of the man whose tastes and talents earned him a reputation as a distinguished connoisseur of art and antiques, world traveler, host extraordinaire, philanthropist and generous friend. Although Henry McIlhenny (1910-1986) is the primary creator, this collection is very much a family affair, encompassing the art collections initiated by his parents, John D. and Frances P. McIlhenny, which passed, along with the family trust fund, on to McIlhenny and his sister Bernice ("Bonnnie") Wintersteen. Much of the material deals with McIlhenny's activities from the mid-1930s to his final years, with particularly extensive documentation of his art collection and of his homes, the latter of which encompasses his penchant for interior design and his passion for horticulture. From 1925 to 1955, Fiske Kimball served as director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, steering the institution from what he described as "a minor provincial position to become one of the leading museums of Americirca" The Fiske Kimball Records document Kimball's efforts in achieving this transformation in collaboration with the Museum's officers, staff, and the Fairmount Park Commission, and with the assistance of private benefactors and City funding. Comprised primarily of correspondence, these records also include ephemera, clippings, notes, legal documents, reports, minutes, press releases, publications, floor plans, installation drawings, and photographs, mostly of objects, rooms and architectural elements offered for purchase. Art to Anne d'Harnoncourt (1943-2008) was both a professional and personal passion. Best recognized for her twenty-five year tenure as director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, d'Harnoncourt collaborated with local, national and international people and organizations, to keep art--and all the arts--relevant and essential in building and bridging communities. Most of the material comprising the Anne d'Harnoncourt Papers traces her professional development in and away from the Museum and consists primarily of correspondence, press clippings, photographs of works of art and events, draft lectures, notes, ephemera and a number of certificates, citations and object awards. Several files of photos and papers pertain to her husband and Museum colleague, Joseph J. Rishel. Family papers and photographs and school records comprise her personal papers. Dorothy Norman Research Collection, 1897-1992, undated (inclusive)

Abstract:
During her twenty-year relationship with photographer and art promoter Alfred Stieglitz, Dorothy Norman, herself a photographer as well as writer, came to know artists such as John Marin, who were defining American modernism during the 1930s and 1940s. Norman published and edited writings about both men, and likely compiled this material in preparation. Documentation pertaining to Alfred Stieglitz consists primarily of exhibition announcements and checklists, and copies of writings published by his gallery An American Place. Equally significant in amount are the copyprints of photographs by Stieglitz, and of works by artists he promoted, such as Georgia O'Keefe, Arthur G. Dove, John Marin and Marsden Hartley. John Marin material consists primarily of photographs and published writings about the artist, including clippings and exhibition catalogues.
