Overview and metadata sections
Born and raised in Ireland, Wilmer Cave France Wright was educated at Girton College, University of Cambridge (1888-1892). She was a Fellow in Greek at Bryn Mawr College, 1892-93. From 1983-94, she was a Fellow in Latin at the University of Chicago and the following year in Greek. She received her PhD degree from the University of Chicago in 1895 and served one year as a Reader in Greek and Latin at that institution before returning until her reitrement in 1933. She served in a number of positions: Reader in Greek and Latin (1897--1899); Associate in Greek (1899-1906); Lecturer in Greek Literature (1906-1907); Associate Professor in Greek (1907-1921); and Professor of Greek (1921-1933).
The Wilmer Cave Wright papers is a collection of the miscellaneous notes and papers of Wilmer Cave Wright. Wright was a Professor of Greek at Bryn Mawr from 1921-1933, but served on the Bryn Mawr faculty since 1897. The collection is not dated in the finding aid. The collection primarily consists of correspondence and miscellaneous materials.
The collection comprises one box containing 9 folders.
Folder 1 contains correspondence, 1899-1949. There are approximately 50 items and the correspondence is miscellaneous and scattered in subject, date, and author. It apparently survived at random and not because of the particular importance of the content. Folders 2 and 3 contains a partial manuscript of "Recent Theories Concerning the Phoenicians." Folders 4 and 5 consist of miscellaneous materials—reprints, prints, notes, and clippings. Folder 6 includes research materials gathered for her translation of Ramazzini. Folder 8 contains newspaper clippings collected by Wright on various topics, while Folder 9 contains an inventory of the Wright library. Also included are two volumes on Plato with Wright's annotations.
Wilmer Cave Wright was a talented teacher and translator of fourth-century literature. This collection contains a variety of materials, most of which do not seem to be directly related to her best-known subjects of translation. However, it would be a useful resource for those interested in her Ramazzini translation, some of her thoughts on Plato, and her theories on the Phoenicians.
