Abstract:
The Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company was a prominent coal mining and shipping company first established in 1820 with the merger of the Lehigh Coal Mining Company and the Lehigh Navigation Company, both of which operated in the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania beginning in 1818. The Company owned and operated an extensive system of coalmines in Pennsylvania’s Carbon and Schuylkill Counties, two canals, and several railroads and railways. The Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company is credited with shaping the course of the American industrial revolution in Pennsylvania, as it contributed to innovation in transportation, manufacturing, and use of natural resources. The Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company records house the business records of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company. Hartwig Kuhlenbeck papers, 1911-1984

Abstract:
Born in Germany in 1897, Dr. Hartwig Kuhlenbeck, a neuroanatomist, received his degrees of Ph.D. in Philosophy and of M.D. (summa cum laude) from the University of Jena, Germany. He spent several years lecturing in Japan and at the University of Breslau (Germany) before moving to the United States in 1933. Dr. Kuhlenbeck was appointed to several positions at the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, beginning in 1935 as Acting Professor of Anatomy and retiring in 1982 as Emeritus Professor of Anatomy. He spent most of his professional career at Woman’s Medical College, with the exception of a two-year leave of absence from 1944-1946, when he served in the United States Army Medical Corps. Dr. Kuhlenbeck published over 150 works during his career as a world-renowned anatomist. He passed away in 1984.

Alma A. Clarke was an American who volunteered in World War I helping French orphans through the Committee France-America for the Protection of the Children of the Frontier and as a Red Cross Auxiliary Nurse in the American Red Cross Military Hospital No. 1 in Neuilly-sur-Seine. The Alma A. Clarke papers provide an in depth view into a World War I nurse's memories and views on her service in France. For the most complete view of Clarke's experiences in France, a researcher should first examine the "Scrapbooks." Abstract:
Jean Scobie Davis, a 1914 graduate of Bryn Mawr College, taught economics and sociology at Agnes Scott College, Vassar College, Pierce College, Wells College and the American Women's College in Beirut. A lifetime interest in prison reform resulted in her work at the New York State Correctional Facility in Bedford Hills, New York. The Jean Scobie Davis papers is a collection consisting largely of Jean Scobie Davis' diaries and correspondence covering nearly all stages of her life. The collection, which dates from 1892 to 1985, is divided into seven subseries: "Autobiographical Material;" "Correspondence;" "Diaries;" "Family History;" "Photographs;" "Prison Reform;" and "Scrapbooks and Guestbook." Material found in the collection is diverse, and consists of letters, reports, bound diaries as well as loose diary pages, photographs, scrapbooks, and handwritten notes.

The Philadelphia Club of Advertising Women (PCAW) was founded in 1916 by sixteen women advertising executives. The Club participated in charitable efforts, offered advertising courses, published a newsletter (Ad-Land News), and hosted social events throughout its history. These efforts garnered national recognition for PCAW as a leading advertising organization. It also won them recognition locally as an organization committed to helping the community through scholarships and charitable giving. This collection contains the records produced by PCAW from 1916 to 1984, including material related to their advertising courses, events, history, charity involvement, and meetings. Rhys Carpenter papers, 1913-1955 (inclusive)

Rhys Carpenter was a highly influential classical archaeologist whose primary fields of study were the transmission of the alphabet; the cultural geography of the Mediterranean region; studies of folktales; and major studies of Greek art, history, archaeology, and literature. Carpenter founded the Bryn Mawr Department of Classical Archaeology, which he headed for more than five decades. The Rhys Carpenter papers are comprised of Carpenter's publications and lectures. Lucy T. Shoe Meritt papers, 1888-2003 (inclusive)

Lucy T. Shoe Meritt (1906- 2003) was an acclaimed archaeologist, scholar, teacher and editor who received her B.A, M.A, and Ph.D degrees from Bryn Mawr. During her life time, Shoe Meritt taught at Mount Holyoke College and the University of Texas at Austin, was a fellow at the American Academy of Rome, and served as the Editor of Publications for the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. Additionally, she was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study and the American Institute of Archaeology. She received the Gold Medal of the Archaeological Institute of America for Distinguished Archaeological Achievement in 1976. The collection is largely comprised of Shoe Meritt's correspondence with her family and notable scholars who were her contemporaries. It also includes diaries, publications, academic and professional papers, as well as photographs, postcards and scrapbooks.

Mary Katharine Woodworth papers, 1787-1989 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Mary Katharine Woodworth (1900 – 1988) graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1924 with a Greek and English major and a minor in archaeology. She received her Ph. D in English from Bryn Mawr in 1933. After her book on British poet and genealogist Samuel Egerton Brydges was published in 1935, she began teaching in the English department at Bryn Mawr, and introduced the college's first course on 20th-century writers. She received a Distinguished Teaching Award from Bryn Mawr in 1968 upon her retirement. Her bequest of her entire estate to Bryn Mawr in 1988, which included Chagall's The Violinist, made her the 4th largest contributor to the college at the time. Abstract:
The Speer Family papers represent four generations of that family, with the bulk of material attributed to the last two generations, especially Robert Elliott Speer and his wife and three of his five children: Emma Bailey, Elliott, Margaret Bailey, and William Speer. The family was active in the Presbyterian Church, serving that institution in a variety of different capacities. The children, in addition to their religious roles, held prominent positions in academic administration. The family's papers primarily consist of the personal papers of the family, although they also contain the professional correspondence of Emma Bailey and Margaret Bailey Speer, both Bryn Mawr College alumnae. This collection, which dates from 1802 to 1982, contains letters, diaries, speeches, publications, awards, and photographs, although the vast majority of the material is the letters between family members.

Abstract:
Henrietta Cozens (fl. 1900-1930s) was a horticulturalist and a friend of the artists Elizabeth Shippen Green Elliott (1872-1954), Violet Oakley (1874-1961), and Jessie Willcox Smith (1863-1935). In 1902, the three artists held their first group exhibition at the Plastic Club, a professional organization for women artists on Camac Street in Philadelphia. After their experience renting studio space at Bryn Mawr College to escape the summer heat of the city, they decided in 1902 to lease the Red Rose Inn in Villanova, where they lived and worked until 1906. The collection consists of correspondence, art, photographs, papers, and other miscellaneous materials.

Marie Corelli was the pseudonym of Mary Mackay, a novelist who was born in London on 1 May 1855. Corelli began her career as a musician, but soon turned to writing instead and published her first novel, A Romance of Two Worlds, in 1886. Corelli became a best-selling author, and her later writings established her as one of the most popular novelists in Britain, whose work often had themes relating to psychic experience and to religion. The Marie Corelli Collection contians correspondence and other materials such as writings and documents.

John Masefield collection, 1894-1944 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The poet John Masefield was born on June 1, 1878 in Ledbury, Herefordshire, England. Masefield was best known for his sea poems, including "Sea Fever" and "Cargoes," and for his long, narrative poems, including "The Everlasting Mercy." He also wrote adventure novels, short stories, and works for children, as well as two autobiographical works. In 1930, he was appointed poet laureate of England, and was awarded the Order of Merit in 1935. Masefield died near Abingdon, Berkshire on 12 May 1967. The collection contains a number of letters, a small group of material about a musical composition by Malcolm Davidson based on Masefield's poem, "A Christmas Carol", prints and photographs.

This collection consists of a large number of scrapbooks assembled by Bryn Mawr College Alumnae, focusing on their years at Bryn Mawr College. The alumnae represented graduated at various times between 1891 and 1950. The vast majority of the scrapbooks come from the earlier years of Bryn Mawr College. There is huge variety among items in this collection. Some scrapbooks contain a great deal of material while others are sparse. Some provide commentary on the items, ranging from simple labels to diary-length entries. Most contain personal memorabilia such as letters and cards, as well as Bryn Mawr College-related materials. These include programs, photographs, newspaper clippings, souvenirs from dances and dinners, and college traditions material. Louise Heron Blair Daura collection, 1918-1927 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Louise Heron Blair Daura (Bryn Mawr College 1927) was married to the Catalan painter Pierre Daura. He joined the Spanish Republican Army in 1937, and Louise wrote a series of letters to her family about going to visit Pierre while he was on leave in Barcelona in 1938. These letters vividly describe the living conditions and damage done to the towns of Spain during the Spanish Civil War. The collection includes letters to Louise while she was at Bryn Mawr as well as letters written to her from family and friends while she traveled in Europe during the 1920s. There are a series of letters that she wrote to her family while living in France after her marriage. The letters give rich descriptions of the life of an American living in Europe before and during the Spanish Civil War. The collection also contains Louise's essays and other writings from Bryn Mawr, giving a sense of what Bryn Mawr was like in the mid-1920s.

Phyllis Walter Goodhart Gordan papers, 1913-1994 (inclusive)

Phyllis Walter Goodhart (1913-1994) was a graduate of Bryn Mawr College (BA 1935) and a Latin and Greek scholar. While at Bryn Mawr, she developed a life-long interest in the works of the Italian humanists, especially Poggio Bracciolini. Mrs. Gordan's extensive scholarly papers reflect her many years of careful study of Italian humanism. Over the years she had acquired a notable collection of published and unpublished research materials from which she generated her meticulous notes on literally hundreds of medieval and Renaissance scholars and events. A majority of the collection is bibliographic and biographic notes on Renaissance leaders, scholars, and ecclesiastics. Abstract:
Alfred Edward Housman, the English poet and classicist, was born on March 26, 1859 near Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. He was appointed to the Chair of Greek and Latin at University College, London in 1892. Housman soon began writing the series of poems which was eventually published as "A Shropshire Lad" in 1896 and later in 1922,"Last Poems" was published. In 1911, he became the professor of Latin at Trinity College, Cambridge where he taught for more than 30 years. Housman passed away from heart disease in April of 1936. This collection includes family related materials, notes on his famous lecture "The Name and Nature of Poetry", photographs, general correspondence and writings.

Theresa Helburn collection, 1900s (inclusive)

Bryn Mawr alumna Theresa Helburn (B.A. 1908) had a long and distinguished career behind the scenes on Broadway, and made important contributions to the professions of film and television from the 1930s to the 1950s. As a producer with New York's Theatre Guild from 1919, Helburn served as a literary manager and casting director, before becoming a co-producer, with Lawrence Langner. The Theatre Guild specialized in bringing the highest-quality drama of Europe and America to Broadway stages. Helburn's responsibilities were wide-ranging, including everything from vetting scripts, to casting plays, to fund-raising, to leading advertising and marketing campaigns. The Theresa Helburn Theater Collection includes over 1400 photographs, 160 playscripts, 139 ground plans, 171 theater programs, and numerous advertisements and other theatrical ephemera. Margaret Ayer Barnes papers, 1920-1938 (inclusive)

Margaret Ayer Barnes (1886-1967) was a graduate of Bryn Mawr College (class of 1907). She was a novelist, playwright, and short story writer. In her three years of service as the College's alumnae director, beginning in 1920, Barnes helped to organize the Summer School for Women Workers in Industry. Barnes' short stories were first published in 1926, and she continued to write consistently throughout the next decade. Barnes is especially well known for her contribution to the critically acclaimed stage production of Edith Wharton's Age of Innocence, as well as her novel Years of Grace (1930), for which Barnes won the Pulitzer Prize. Ralph Hodgson and Aurelia Bolliger Hodgson papers, 1896-1984 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Very little is known about the early life of Ralph Hodgson (1871-1962), a British poet. In the 1890s, he worked as a newspaper and magazine illustrator, signing some of his works 'Yorick', and, in 1913, founded "The Sign of the Flying Fame" publishers along with Claud Lovat Fraser and Holbrook Jackson. Hodgson published a variety of poetry volumes prior to joining that army at the beginning of World War I. In 1923, he accepted a position as a lecturer in English at Sendai University in Japan. It was here that he met his third wife, Aurelia Bolliger (1898-1984), an American born teacher at the Women's College of Sendai. The couple faced a variety of difficulties during the early years of their marriage, including Aurelia's young age, loss of job because of her relationship with Ralph, and her family's struggle to accept their marriage. George Aaron Barton taught at Haverford College as a lecturer for two years and at the same time joied the Bryn Mawr faculty as Associate Professor of Biblical literature and Semitic Languages, 1891. He taught at Bryn Mawr continuously as Professor of Biblical Literature and Semitic Languages until 1922 when he joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylcania as Professor of Semitic Languages. In addition, Dr. Barton was director of the American School for Oriental Research at Jerusalem, 1902-03, and at Baghdad, 1921-34; also Professor of New Testament Literature and Laguage at the Divinity School of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Philadelphia,, 1921-37. Susan FitzGerald was a member of the Bryn Mawr class of 1929, the daughter of Susan Walker FitzGerald, who founded the Self-Government Association. Susan FitzGerald taught Spanish and German from 1930-1945 before becoming involved with the United States Information Agency. She worked all over the world as the director of English language programs and teaching English. FitzGerald retired in 1972. The Susan FitzGerald papers house the personal papers of Susan FitzGerald. The collection, which spans 1926 to 1954, is comprised of correspondence and USIA (United States Information Agency) printed material.

Edith Wetherill (Ives) scrapbook, 1888-1934 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Edith Wetherill was a member of the Bryn Mawr Class of 1892. She was one of the founders of the Civic Club in Philadelphia, which was one of the first organizations of its kind in the country. She was an active volunteer, working with the Bellevue Hospital, the Unitarian Church, the Red Cross, and the Civilian Defense Volunteer Office. Her scrapbook houses Wetherill's one volume scrapbook. The scrapbook is very large and contains materials from 1888-1934, both well before and after Wetherill attended Bryn Mawr. The scrapbook primarily consists of photographs and newspaper clippings, giving a very comprehensive vision of Bryn Mawr from the 1890s well into the 1900s.

Abstract:
Melanie Atherton Updegraff (1886-1973) was a 1908 graduate of Bryn Mawr who went on to do missionary work for the Presbyterian Mission Board alongside her husband, Reverend David Benjamin Updegraff. The two were primarily stationed in Kolhapur and later Nipani, in West India. The collection includes correspondence between Updegraff and her sisters, children, and sister-in-law, among other family members, photographs of the Atherton and Updegraff families, an autograph collection, and brochures, pamphlets, and official documentation pertaining to Updegraff's missionary work. Updegraff's four sisters and three daughters all went to Bryn Mawr, and we hear about entrance exams, musical productions, and other campus activities in their letters.

Abstract:
In 1751, Joshua Humphreys was born in Haverford, Pennsylvania, and became the nation's most important naval architect in the post-Revolutionary era concerned with building and retrofitting military fleets. His most well-known ship is the Constitution, which is known as "Old Ironsides" and is the oldest commissioned U.S. naval vessel still afloat. In 1803, Humphreys retired, and his son Samuel continued the business. This collection consists of volumes, including daybooks and financial records; correspondence; family papers; and legal documents.

Abstract:
The Logan family was a prominent Philadelphia family dating back to 1699, when James Logan, the family patriarch, arrived in Philadelphia to serve as the first secretary of the Pennsylvania colony. Through work in agriculture and politics, Logan and his descendants were intimately involved in the development of the Pennsylvania colony and, later, the fledging United States. James Logan's prominence resulted in connections, both professional and familial, with other prominent colonial families, including the Norris and Dickinson families. The Logan family papers, 1638-1964 (bulk 1670-1872), documents James Logan’s personal and professional life, as well as that of several generations of his descendents. Abstract:
Growing out of egalitarian concerns of members of the Society of Friends, the Pennsylvania Abolition Society, as it is now known, was founded in 1775 as the Society for the Relief of Free Negroes Unlawfully Held in Bondage, but the Revolution caused its early Quaker members to suspend operations until 1784, when it reorganized with a broader base. From the beginning, the Abolition Society's programs were devoted not only to the abolition of slavery, but to the social and economic improvement of Black Americans as well. This collection of records documents the Pennsylvania Abolition Society's history and its work from mid 1700s to the 1990s, and particularly during the 1800s, through minutes and reports, manumissions and indentures, correspondence, financial papers, and a significant assortment of miscellaneous papers from other anti-slavery and humanitarian organzations.

This collection contains the papers of Herbert Welsh, noted political reformer and activist, founder of the Indian Rights Association, editor and publicist, and advocate for the conservation of the forests of Lake Sunapee. The collection also contain papers collected by Herbert Welsh, mostly by his father John Welsh, Philadelphia merchant, U.S. diplomat, and chairman of the International Centennial Exhibition of 1876. The collection spans from 1759 to 1935 with the bulk of the materials covering the years between 1898 and 1925 and includes correspondence, financial files, papers related to Welsh’s interests and activism, broadsides, pamphlets, serials, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, and photographs.

Abstract:
Mary Elizabeth Hallock’s arrival in Philadelphia in 1882 at the age of eleven set into motion a forty-year career as a musician, inventor, lecturer, writer and political activist. Born in Beirut, September 8, 1871 to Sara (Tabet) Hallock, descendant of an aristocratic Syrian family, and Samuel Hallock, a U.S. consul, she was educated in Beirut and Philadelphia. A gifted musician, Hallock graduated from Philadelphia’s Musical Academy in 1893, and in 1897 studied piano in Vienna with Theodore Leschetizky. In 1898 in Johnstown, New York, Hallock married Dr. Frank L. Greenewalt, thirty-two years old and a physician-in-chief at Girard College. The Greenewalts had one son, Crawford, born in 1902. Greenewalt, a pianist noted for her interpretation of Chopin, began in the early 1900s to investigate how gradated colored lighting might enhance the emotional expression of music. Abstract:
Abraham Markoe of St. Croix was a wealthy planter and merchant who moved to Philadelphia circa 1770. He became an active revolutionary, and founded the Philadelphia Light Horse militia, later renamed the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry. The Markoe family papers are a highly miscellaneous assortment of correspondence, estate papers, deeds, photographs, and other papers from a variety of family members, including Abraham's children, Abraham Markoe, Jr., Mary Markoe Holsman, Sarah Markoe, and Peter Markoe. Also of special note in the collection are General John Markoe's Civil War correspondence and documents on his service in Virginia, his imprisonment at Richmond, 1861-1862, and his role at the battle of Fredericksburg.
