Abstract:: Established in 1916, the Sun Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company produced hundreds of ships (primarily tankers and cargo ships) for other companies as well as its own. These included private parties, other oil companies, and, particularly during World War II, the United States Maritime Commission. During World War II, the National Defense Program helped make the Sun shipyard one of the world's biggest producers of oil tankers, with more than 35,000 people working in the shipyard. The yard built more than 250 tankers for the war effort and repaired more than 1,500 ships that were damaged during the conflicts. The company also developed many new building technologies and became known for its use of "All-Welded Construction." Thayer family collection, 1892-1986 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Thayers were a prominent Philadelphia-area family at the turn of the 20th century. John Borland Thayer, Jr. was a vice-president of the Pennsylvania Railroad when he died in the sinking of Titanic on April 15, 1912. The Thayer family collection consists of more than 700 items of ocean liner ephemera dating from 1892 to 1986, including postcards, abstracts of logs, advertisements, passenger lists, menus, deck plans, photographs, stationery and baggage tags from ships of more than 40 lines. The collection also includes one of the only extant first class passenger lists from Titanic.

Library Company of Philadelphia Shareholders records, 1732-2007 (inclusive)

Abstract:: In 1731, Benjamin Franklin and a number of his fellow members of the Junto founded the Library Company of Philadelphia, in order to provide its members access to books that they could not afford to purchase individually, but could afford to purchase collectively. Fifty subscribers invested forty shillings each and promised to pay ten shillings a year thereafter to buy books and maintain a shareholder's library. Thus "the Mother of all American Subscription Libraries" was established. Over the years, the Library Company continues to be supported by its members who participate in a centuries-old tradition by becoming shareholders and therefore allowing the Library Company of Philadelphia to continue serving the public, free of charge. Abstract:: Martin Biddle was the Director of the University Museum from 1978 to 1981. In addition, he served as a Professor in the Department of Archaeology at the University of Pennsylvania. His administrative records consist of forty archival boxes of correspondence, administrative memos and reports and material related to exhibitions. Museum Building Records, 1892-2007 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The first section of the University of Pennsylvania Museum building, designed to exhibit the large archaeological and ethnological collections amassed in the preceding twelve years, was opened in 1899. The architects, Wilson Eyre, Jr., Cope and Stewardson, and Frank Miles Day and Brother, envisioned this first section as the westernmost wing of an immense building, at least three times the size of the present museum. The second section, the Harrison Rotunda, consisting of the exhibit hall and auditorium, was added in 1915. It featured a dome constructed by Rafael Guastavino. In 1926 the Eckley B. Coxe, Jr. Egyptian Wing opened, followed by the Administrative Wing (nowadays called the "Sharpe" Wing after the third floor gallery bearing that name) in 1929. Building activity stopped after 1929 until construction began on the Academic Wing in 1969. Abstract:: The Museum collections, initially displayed in the University Library in the Furness Building, were transferred to the new building in 1898. In the years that followed, the collections and the space available continued to grow and the Museum prepared both permanent and loan exhibits. The earliest Museum exhibits can be found in the records of the individual sections. An exhibit staff member was appointed in 1940; the staff remaining relatively small. Although exhibit catalogs date from 1892, few files were kept, and the photographic collections are often helpful in documenting past exhibitions. The files are arranged chronologically. Abstract:: The Casting Department of the Penn Museum was begun in the 1890s and continued until 2010. The museum staff was initially in charge of making the casts. Those involved in the early days included Paul Casci, the first museum restorer, and M. Louise Baker, the official museum artist. The Casting Department papers consist of 0.5 linear feet of annual reports, list of available casts and prices, and labels from the Museum casting department. The material has been divided into three series: Annual Reports, Labels, and List of Available Casts.

Mediterranean Section-Classical Archaeology Department (CLARC), 1971-1992 (inclusive)

Abstract:: In 1948, the Council of the Graduate School at the University of Pennsylvania approved the establishment of a Group Committee in Classical Archaeology. It was discovered years later that this committee had never been approved formally by the Board of the Trustees of the University. But a de facto graduate program had been established, and in 1975 the "Pritchard Committee" recommended to Dean Gregorian that Classical Archaeology be recognized as a graduate group, to consist of the four classical archaeologists already on staff, plus additional members from other groups. The records of the Mediterranean Section, Classical Archaeology Department (CLARC)consist of one archival box of twelve folders. The material is divided into two series, Correspondence and Administration.

MASCA- Stuart Fleming Records, 1975-2009 (inclusive)

Abstract:: MASCA, or the Museum Applied Science Center for Archaeology, was established in 1961 by a grant from the National Science Foundation. MASCA was modeled after the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art in Oxford. From the time of its inception in 1961, MASCA, along with the Radiocarbon Laboratory, made a number of contributions to radiocarbon dating and other dating and materials analysis techniques including thermoluminescence, xeroradiography, Proton Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) analysis of metals, analysis of faunal and plant remains and other projects either within the museum or remotely at archaeological sites. MASCA was disassembled in 2009.

Bet Sh'ean, Israel Expedition records, 1919-1984 (inclusive) 1921-1933 (bulk)

Abstract:: From 1921 to 1933, the Palestine Expedition of the University of Pennsylvania Museum conducted excavations at Bet Sh'ean, a site located 12 miles south of the Sea of Galilee in Israel. The expedition was intended to be an extensive research effort in Syria-Palestine, but this goal was never fully achieved due to financial stringencies imposed during the Depression of the 1930s. Clarence S. Fisher, Curator of the Egyptian Section of the University Museum, directed the first three seasons of work at Bet Sh'ean. Alan Rowe and Gerald M. FitzGerald directed the subsequent seven field seasons. Nine major occupation levels were described, the earliest dating to the Late Neolithic, and the latest from the Arab/Crusader periods. Abstract:: John Lambert Cotter is widely considered to have been a pioneer in American historical archaeology in a career. He began his career, that spanned some sixty-five years, studying and working in traditional prehistoric archaeology, earnestly beginning his explorations in historical archaeology in the 1950s. Abstract:: William C. Farabee (1865-1925) was a physical and cultural anthropologist, archaeologist, and cartographer who devoted most of his life’s work to documenting and interpreting the native cultures of South America, principally the Arawak and Carib peoples of the Amazon basin and the native peoples of the Andes. He also conducted archaeological studies at Marajo Island, Brazil, and at several other locations, including Peru and Ecuador. The collection consists of 5.3 linear feet of textual and photographic documentation related principally to the Amazon expedition of the University of Pennsylvania Museum, 1913-1916, and also to the Andean expedition of 1922-1923.

Abstract:: Elizabeth Lyons was a native of Michigan who received her B.A. at the University of Michigan and M.A. at Michigan State University. She studied Fine Arts at the Fine Arts Institute at N.Y.U., the Musee Anquantenaire, Brussels andthe Ecole du Louvre, Paris. He rtenure with the University of Pennsylvania Museum began in 1968 following a term as lecturer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. While working in the Asian section of the museum, Ms Lyons took a leave to work for the FOrd Foundation in their program of assistance to Southeast Asia art and archaeology. she returned to the Museum as Keeper of the Asian Section. The Elizabeth Lyons papers are four archival boxes of materials related to her professional career, personal writings, research, and photographs. A large amount of correspondence is filed with the correspondeing series.

Abstract:: The collection of Schuyler Van Rensselaer Cammann’s papers, member of the Department of Oriental Studies at the University of Pennsylvania 1948-1982 and Associate Curator of the East Asian Collections 1948-1955, consist of 13 linear feet of correspondence; published and unpublished papers and book reviews; lectures; research notes; unpublished fiction; photographs; drawings; employment history at the University of Pennsylvania; teaching materials; and travels and tours. Professor Cammann wrote, lectured, taught, and consulted in several geographic areas (including China, Tibet, Mongolia, Japan) on such topics as textiles, carpets, art, ivory, snuff bottles, Magic Squares, and symbolism. He authored four books and hundreds of articles and reviews, and presented considerable number of lectures to various meetings, organizations and conferences.

Abstract:: Keith R. DeVries (1937-2006) taught Greek and Anatolian archaeology at the University of Pennsylvania from 1969 until his retirement in 2004. His research included Greek fibulae, pottery, and homosexuality. His early field work included excavations at Ischia and Corinth during the 1960's (not included in this collection), but the bulk of his work was at Gordion (Turkey) from 1971 through 2003, where he was also project director from 1974 through 1987. He continued his professional research, especially related to Gordion and Greek homosexuality, until his death in 2006.

Ellen L. Kohler papers, 1930-2006 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Ellen L. Kohler (1916-2008) taught classical archaeology at the University of Pennsylvania (Roman and Etruscan) from 1958 until 1980. Her early field work included excavations at Kourion, Cyprus (1949, 1951, 1955) and at Sybaris (1962), but her principal work was at Gordion, Turkey, where she assisted project director Rodney Young and later Keith DeVries during 18 seasons variously between 1950 and 1982, and in 1992. Her research interests included early Phrygian animal-style carvings in wood and ivory, but she later worked almost exclusively with the inventory of 6th to 7th century Gordion tumulus burial objects. Her principal report, The Lesser Phrygian Tumuli, Part 1, was published in 1995. Dr. Kohler also served as Assistant Curator of the Mediterranean Section of the University Museum from 1958 to 1965, Registrar from 1965 to 1977, and Research Associate from 1968 until her death in 2008. Cecil L. Striker Personal Papers, 1957-2009 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Dr. Cecil L. Striker was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and attended Oberlin College for his undergraduate degree. While working on his M.A. and Ph.D. at The Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, Striker supplemented his studies in programs at Harvard University, the University of Marburg, and Technische Hochschule Munich. Dr. Striker came to the University of Pennsylvania in 1968 as an Associate Professor in the Department of the History of Art. Full professorship was bestowed in 1978. Striker represented Dumbarton Oaks during restoration and investigative field work at Kalenderhane Camii in Istanbul. The materials relate to Striker's major area of work, the archaeology and architectural history of the Late Antique, Early Christian, Byzantine and Medieval periods (fourth through 15th centuries A.D.). Its geographic focus is on the lands of the former Byzantine Empire (modern Turkey, Greece, ex-Yugoslavia and Albania). There is also some material from Latin West.

Abstract:: Jacques Bordaz (1926-2000) was a French-born anthropologist and archaeologist who conducted field work and research at Native-American sites from 1949-1963, and at Neanderthal and Neolithic sites in Iraq and Turkey since 1960. Along with his wife, fellow archaeologist Louise Alpers Bordaz (1941-2002), he excavated and studied the Neolithic sites of Suberde and Erbaba in southwestern Turkey between 1964 and 1978. A major focus of both of these projects was the study of the manufacture and use of stone tools. The Suberde project included an analysis of animal bone remains to determine patterns of hunting and stock-raising, and the Erbaba project included analysis of Neolithic pottery. Jacques and Louise Bordaz subsequently undertook a joint study of the traditional crafts of Turkey. Abstract:: This collection contains the literary papers of author and illustrator Robert Lawson (1892-1957), collected by Frederick R. Gardner. Materials date from 1900 to 1983. Lawson’s illustrations make up the bulk of this collection; illustrations for forty-seven titles and unpublished artworks are represented. In addition to etchings and illustrations in graphite, pen and ink, and watercolor, the collection includes articles, clippings, correspondence, manuscript drafts, photographs, promotional materials, slides, and speeches. Some of Frederick R. Gardner's records relating to his collecting project are also represented. Abstract:: Richard Gimbel (1898-1970) was a leading rare book and manuscript collector and the son of the founder of Gimbel's department store. Edgar Allan Poe was an American poet, short-story writer, editor, and literary critic, and is considered part of the American Romantic Movement. This collection of material was largely collected by Richard A. Gimbel and dates from 1809 to 1995. It includes numerous original manuscripts and correspondence by or related to Poe.

Abstract:: The Thornton Oakley collection of Howard Pyle and his students covers the influential artistic career of Howard Pyle and several of his students, most notably Maxfield Parrish, Violet Oakley, and N.C. Wyeth. The collection includes a wide range of materials, which was collected and assembled by Pyle’s former student Thornton Oakley. There are tear sheets of artwork published in magazines, original illustrations, photographs, research notes, manuscripts, and correspondence. Besides Howard Pyle, artists well represented in this collection include Elizabeth Shippen Green, Jessie Wilcox Smith, George Harding, Violet Oakley, N.C. Wyeth, and a large collection of material on Maxfield Parrish.
