Overview and metadata sections
Founded in 1893 at the World's Fair in Chicago as the American Society of Superintendents of Training Schools for Nurses, the National League for Nursing was the first nursing organization in the United States. Isabel Hampton, superintendent at Johns Hopkins Training School in Baltimore, chaired a group of leaders who set the foundation for reforming nursing and nursing education. In 1912 it would become the National League of Nursing Education, and in 1952 it became as it is now known as the National League for Nursing (NLN).
The National League for Nursing is a leading organization for nurse faculty and leaders in nursing education. NLN members represent nursing education programs across higher education, health care organizations, and agencies.
The National League for Nursing (NLN) collection was initially acquired by the Bates Center between 2015 and 2018, with continual donations.
The first series focuses on materials related to the business and operation of the National League for Nursing. Workshops, conference materials, mailings, council minutes, and board of director materials are included here. In addition, this series has newsletters and other annual publications.
Series two focuses on the chapter organizations, primarily the Colorado League for Nursing that has since disbanded. Records include meeting minutes, bylaws, financial information, conferences and partnerships CLN was in league with, and membership information. Some materials regarding the NLN, specifically conference programs, Presidents' orientation, and other NLN sponsored activities have been moved into series one.
The third series contains a few photographs used in a publication as well as born-digital photographs on CDs, DVDs, audio cassette tapes, and video tapes from their library, mostly produced by the National League for Nursing. The video tapes have been digitized. Please contact the Center for more information.
The next series consists of printed materials used by the NLN or related to causes and reform movements, such as health care. This also includes newsletters and other mailed content produced by the NLN.
The fifth series contains publications produced by the NLN. There are some items found within the NLN library that are not produced by the NLN but relate to activities, actions, or ideology of the NLN. This also contains the proceedings of the annual convention held by the American Society of Superintendents of Training Schools for Nurses, and later, the National League for Nursing Education.

Processing was generously funded by the Independence Foundation and the National League for Nursing.
The publication series was processed first with original items donated by the NLN along with a selection from Stormont Vail Health. A second processing stage with additional materials donated by Mayo Clinic Libraries and the Bates Center is ongoing. Please contact the Center for more information about accession donations and current processing status.
Some materials retained by the Colorado League for Nursing chapter regarding the NLN, specifically conference programs, Presidents' orientation, and other NLN sponsored activities have been moved into series one and are noted.
The video tapes have been digitized. Please contact the Center for more information.
