Dr. Mavis Kelsey Collection of Adams-Harris Papers, 1814-1820 (inclusive)

Abstract:
John Quincy Adams, later President of the United States, acted as Chief Plenipotentiary of the American delegation negotiating the Treaty of Ghent, and ending the War of 1812. Levett Harris was the American Consul (later the Charge d'Affaires) in Russia at this time. Adams's letters containing observations on the course of the negotiations, mediated by the Emperor Alexander, to Levett Harris are included in this collection. Harris, when later seeking appointment as Minister to Russia, was accused of having used his previous office corruptly for his personal gain. The collection also includes a statement in Harris' hand of his defense against this charge. W. D. Lewis, an American merchant residing in Russia during Harris' time there, returned to the U.S. in 1819 and made the accusation. S. F. Bemis describes the charge in his J. Q. Benjamin West was raised in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and worked most of his life as an artist in Pennsylvania and London, England. He created a wide variety of works during his career, from simple portraits to historical and religious scenes, and often utilized neoclassical elements in his designs. This collection consists of thirty-three original drawings and sketches by West, several of which served as studies or were made in preparation for larger paintings.

Abstract:
This collection consists of material relating to the Hall and Hallam families in the Leicester area of England, dating from 1785 to 1818. The families appear to have farmed, but they also appear to have been extremely religious, serving as lay preachers and religious leaders for the surrounding communities. The collection contains a recipe book for inks and sealing wax, a commonplace book, a survey for Alton Grange Farm, a diary, and a sermon or speech. While several items are specifically tied to these two families, the other material is assumed to be connected to family members. There is only superficial documentation of any member of the family, but collectively, there is a sense of religious faith crossing generations.

Abstract:
The Dillwyn and Emlen family was joined in 1795 when Susanna Dillwyn married Samuel Emlen, Jr. Both the Dillwyn and Emlen families were prominent in early America as Quakers and advocates for abolition. This collection consists of five disbound volumes of letters written to and from William Dillwyn of London and his daughter Susanna Dillwyn in America from 1770 to 1795; and thereafter until 1818, to and from Susanna and her husband Samuel Emlen, Jr. of Burlington County, New Jersey. Although Susanna lived almost her entire life apart from her father, their letters are frequent and deal primarily with family matters and kin. However, there is frequent comment concerning such topics as yellow fever; abolitionism and slavery; Native Americans; breast cancer; and American and European politics, including the Napoleonic wars and the embargo, as well as their effects upon trade and merchants in Philadelphia and London.

This small collection includes letters from Elizabeth Ann Seton to Matthias and Joseph O’Conway. Matthias, a prominent Philadelphian especially within the Catholic community, was the father of Cecilia O’Conway, Philadelphia’s first nun and the first women to join Seton’s order, the Sisters of Charity. The correspondence is personal in nature and relates to several members of the O’Conway family, particularly Cecilia. Also included is a letter from Elizabeth to her sister-in-law Rebecca Seton regarding members of the Seton family.

Henry Drinker Letters to Isaac Hicks, 1801, 1817 (inclusive) 1801 (bulk) (bulk)

Abstract:
Henry Drinker (1734-1809) was a successful Philadelphia Quaker merchant and served as clerk of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting. A prominent New York City merchant, Isaac Hicks (1767-1820) was a cousin of the Quaker artist and minister Edward Hicks and of Quaker minister Elias Hicks. Drinker and Hicks were close friends and acted as business agents for each other, reflected in the 1801 correspondence. As prominent members of the Society of Friends, they were active in Quaker concerns, including education. A single letter from Henry Drinker's son, Henry S. Drinker, dated September 3, 1817, acknowledges Hicks's receipt of funds forwarded to support the education of the children of Thomas Potts, a English merchant in Honduras.

Also included is the copy book of a certain "S.B." of Darby Monthly Meeting, dated 1740-1746. This book contains tables of climates and distances, home remedies, and personal financial records. Notable are a list of the holdings of the Philadelphia library in 1741, an elegy to John Chalkley (1741), and an elegy to Robert Jordan.

Henry Ernest Muhlenberg papers, 1781-1816 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection contains scientific letters written to Henry Ernest Muhlenberg (1753-1815). Muhlenberg, a Lutheran pastor and biologist, is considered the first botanist born in America who researched the flora and fauna of his homeland systematically. His work contributed considerably to the advancement of natural science around 1800. Some new descriptions and assignations of North American plants based on the system of Carl von Linné (also known as Carl Linnaeus, 1707-1778) go back to Muhlenberg. He discovered a type of grass of the subfamily of Chloridoideae common in Mexico and the south west of the United States, which after his discovery was named “the Muhlenbergia.” Various types of plants bear the type-epitheton “Muhlenbergii” to honor Henry Ernest Muhlenberg. He also discovered and identified the bog turtle, which got the epitheton “glyptemys muhlenbergii.” The German botanist Carl Ludwig Willdenow (1765-1812) honored Muhlenberg by naming a genus of grasses “Muhlenbergia.”...(see more)

Samuel Wetherill Correspondence, 1780-1816 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Samuel Wetherill (1736-1816), a Philadelphia manufacturer of cloth, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals, was a birthright Quaker born in Burlington, N.J. During the Revolutionary War, he actively supported the military effort and was disowned from Philadelphia Monthly Meeting in 1779. In 1781, he, along with other disowned Quakers, founded an independent Quaker meeting, called the Society of Free Quakers. This collection contains correspondence primarily from another group of disowned Quakers from Sandwich Monthly Meeting in Massachusetts. This New England group was centered on Timothy Davis (1730-1798), a respected Friend and minister, who published a pamphlet in 1776 concerning the payment of taxes to the new government. He was disowned in 1778. The collection includes business and personal letters as well as those which deal directly with the cause of the Free Quakers.
