Overview and metadata sections
Samuel Stanhope Smith was a Presbyterian minister, founder of Hampden-Sydney College, and the seventh president of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University). In his work, Smith expressed progressive views on marriage and egalitarian ideas about race and slavery.
The collection consists of manuscripts, letters, and documents of Smith, covering, for the most part, the years (1795-1812) he served as president of the College of New Jersey, now Princeton. Included are autograph manuscripts of several sermons; "A System of Moral Philosophy for the Students of Nassau Hall" (autograph manuscript, 169 pp. in 2 notebooks), a course he gave in ten lectures; autograph letters to Samuel Bayard, Nicholas Biddle, Aaron Burr, Jonathan Dayton, Ashbel Green, and other Princetonians, which detail his efforts to secure funds and/or scientific equipment for the College; and his certificate as an honorary member in the Society of St. Andrew. Also included is a document signed by Smith as President of the College of New Jersey, on behalf of its Trustees, giving power of attorney to Elias Boudinot and Joshua Wallace; it is dated July 7, 1800.
Gifts of A. Phillippe von Hemert and Jeremy J. Cater.
