Stephen Wanton Gould (1781-1838) was born circa 1781 in Newport, Rhode Island, to James and Hannah Gould. He married Hannah Rodman and the couple had one son, John Stanton Gould. Stephen was an active Quaker, and worked as a repairer of clocks in Newport, Rhode Island.

This collection is composed of the single, handwritten diary of Stephen Gould. Diary entries include descriptions of social calls, Quaker Meetings, the health of Gould's young son, births, deaths, and marriages within the Quaker community, and discussions of the War of 1812 and Gould's opposition to warfare in general.
