Abstract:
World Peaceways was incorporated in 1931 as World Peace Posters, Inc. The organization changed its name to World Peaceways, Inc. in 1932 to reflect the expansion of its media campaign beyond posters and billboards to include modern advertising techniques. These included magazine advertising and radio programming to counteract the "artificial glories of war."

Abstract:
Holdings in Tamiment Library: about half the records of the New York Bureau of Legal Advice consist of case histories pertaining to selective service exemption, draft evasion, conscientious objector status, military imprisonment, military discharge, desertion, amnesty, civil liberties and deportations. One third of the collection consists of office files, administrative reports and correspondence, including extensive fundraising correspondence. The remainder of the collection is made up of press releases and newspaper clippings. Correspondents include Mary Beard, Sarah N. Cleghorn, Bina Flynn, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, Agnes Smedley, Louis Untermeyer, Thorsten Veblen, H.L. Mencken, Sinclair Lewis, Judah L. Magnes, and Stephen Wise.

Helen Mears Papers, 1862-1981 (inclusive) 1935-1955 (bulk)

Abstract:
Helen Mears was a writer and journalist, especially interested in Japan and Asia. Mears first traveled to China in 1925 and ten years later Mears spent nine months in Japan. Out of the trip to Japan she published two books and a series of essays that appeared in The New Yorker. Mears traveled throughout Asia, the Soviet Union, Europe, and parts of South America. After World War II Mears traveled again to Japan served in an official capacity as a member of the U.S. labor advisory committee. From the 1950s through the 1960s Mears wrote occasional articles on southeast Asia, critiquing European and U.S. involvement there. Mears was a board member of the War Resisters League in the 1950s and worked against the H-Bomb. Helen Mears published several books on Japan. These include: Mirror for Americans, Japan, Boston : Houghton Mifflin Co., 1948; Year of the Wild Boar: an American Woman in Japan in 1947.

Édouard Theis Collected Papers, 1947-1965 (bulk)

Abstract:
Édouard Theis was a missionary and teacher in Madagascar and the Cameroons, before joining the theology faculty at the University of Paris. As a pacifist and conscientious objector to war Theis resisted Nazi violence and racism during World War II. Along with André and Magda Trocmé, Theis and his wife, Mildred, co-founded the Collège Cévenol in 1938. Theis taught French, German, and Greek, and his wife taught there as well. Theis also served as the college's first [second?] director until his retirement in 1963.

The World Peace Council (WPC) is an international organization representing over 100 countries. Currently, its headquarters are in Greece. The organization was founded in 1948 and Frederic Joliot-Curie was its first president. According to the WPC website, it is described as an "anti-imperialist, democratic, independent and non-aligned international movement of mass action. It is an integral part of the world peace movement and acts in cooperation with other international and national movements" (2011).

Grace Contrino Abrams and Fran Contrino Schmidt Collected Papers, 1942-1980 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This small collection of papers details especially the life of Grace Contrino Abrams and her strong interests in teaching and in working against injustice in whatever form. The clippings from newspapers of media coverage, as well as the many Letters to the Editor, show some of her public life, while letters, and reminiscences of sister Fran Contrino Schmidt, fill out her private life. It should be noted that though there were five siblings, Grace and Fran spent much of their time together in private and public life, and this is reflected in the collection. Grace and Fran taught in Florida public schools and were pioneers in peace education curriculum.
