Abstract:
This collection contains materials given to the donor by her aunt, June Miller Thompson. Materials include photos, media, audiotapes, and diaries related to the Great Peace March. Her writings related to peace, peaceful civil disobedience, nuclear war, and nuclear energy are also included. Her engagement in the Ribbon prior to and during August 1985, included her participation and presence (and that of her husband, Bill Willard Thompson) in Hiroshima while the Ribbon was unfolding in Washington, DC. She is the sister of Justine Merritt, the donor's mother. The collection also contains mterials given to the donor by her mother, Justine Miller Merritt. Materials include photos, books, audiotapes, VHS tapes, media, diaries, and writing related to the Ribbon, a multi-year grassroots effort to educate and motivate people to protect the earth and all that they love from the dangers of nuclear war. The Peace Action collection is a continuation of the SANE and SANE Education Fund (DG 58) collection, which also resides at the SCPC (the papers of the Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign are at the University of Missouri at St. Louis). It documents the merger of SANE and the NWFC, as well as the goals and work of the merged organization, through meeting minutes, correspondence, program files, press clippings and other publicity, statements and communications with Congress and other leaders, as well as publications and resources in other formats. Includes correspondence, annual reports, administrative files, financial records, flyers and handbills, memorabilia, minutes of meetings, newspaper clippings, periodicals, publicity materials, reference files, audiocassettes, slides, reel-to-reel tapes, videocassettes, computer diskettes, photographs, and posters. The Five College Program in Peace and World Security Studies was part of the Five Colleges of Western Massachusetts (Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, Smith, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst). The inter-institutional program conducted a series of lectures, panels, and films, as well as conferences and faculty workshops, to enhance the teaching of peace studies across the United States.

Great Peace March for Global Nuclear Disarmament Records, 1986 - date (inclusive) 1986 (bulk)

Abstract:
In 1986 six hundred people marched across the United States to demonstrate their opposition to the world-wide nuclear arms race. The march took nine months from California to Washington, D.C. The marchers wrote: "we will create a non-violent focus for positive change; the imperative being that nuclear weapons are politically, socially, economically and morally unjustifiable, and that, in any number, they are unacceptable." The GPM was also a traveling intentional and communal society.

Collection consists of one folder of biographical information about Lucy Haessler; the remainder is a typewritten transcription of taped interviews, 1986-1987, by Anthony von der Muhll (Haessler's grandson) for his thesis, Fighting Her Way : an Oral History of Lucy Haessler (B.A. thesis, University of California, Santa Cruz, 1987); in later years she lived in Santa Cruz, California, where she died.

International Peace Walk Records, 1986- (inclusive)

Abstract:
The IPW was begun in January, 1987 by individuals who had participated in the Great Peace March for Global Nuclear Disarmament. IPW members organized marches across the United States and the Soviet Union in 1987 and 1988, with marches planned for future years. The purpose was to create a climate of trust between American and Soviet citizens in which arms control and reductions would become increasingly easier, and to focus attention on the costs of the U.S.-Soviet arms race. The IPW was headquartered in Washington, D.C., with regional U.S. offices. The collection includes correspondence, administrative files, marcher applications, newspaper clippings, photographs, slides, and banners. Among the correspondents are: Allan Affeldt, Allen Smith, and Franklin Folsom.

The SOA Watch was founded in 1990 by Catholic peace activist, Father Roy Bourgeois. The organization tracks and monitors the work of the School of the Americas (SOA), renamed the "Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation," (WHISC), in 2001. The WHISC is a combat training school for Latin American military personnel, located at Fort Benning, Georgia. The SOA Watch is a direct action protest organization.

The Peace Studies Association (PSA) was formed in 1987, when fifteen directors and representatives of existing college and university peace studies programs met at Colgate University to identify needs of faculty in peace studies and areas of cooperation among programs. The PSA worked to cooperate with organizations and individuals concerned with peace studies and the development of a more peaceful world. The PSA merged with the Consortium on Peace Research, Education and Development (COPRED) in 2002 to form the Peace and Justice Studies Association.

The Alliance for Nuclear Accountability (ANA), is a national network of organizations working to address issues of nuclear weapons production and waste cleanup. The organization was founded in Colorado in 1987 as the Military Production Network (MPN). In 1997 the name was name to the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability. The headquarters of the organization are in Washington D.C. and its members work together as a network to influence national policies related to nuclear weapons production, testing, research, cleanup of contaminated sites, public safety, and worker health. ANA's list of member organizations has expanded to include groups working on the costs and consequences of nuclear power facilities as well.

Audiocassettes and typed transcripts of interviews with Bayard Rustin, his friends and co-workers for D'Emilio's book Lost Prophet: the Life and Times of Bayard Rustin. Slater is internationally known for her expertise and work on disarmament issues.

Abstract:
Co-founded by peace activisits David Hartsough and Mel Duncan in 2002, the Nonviolent Peaceforce is an unarmed civilian peace force that works internationally by protecting civilians in conflicts and helping to resolve conflicts peacefully through dialogue. Records include the early development and planning of the organization, funding and financing, media and publicity attention the organization received, committee minutes, international trip reports, and training of the civilian peacekeepers. There are also papers dealing with activities of the co-founders prior to the Nonviolent Peaceforce from the 1990s, with a focus on Bosnia and Yugoslavia.

More than 800 organizations--human rights, environmental, gender, disarmament-- have endorsed the HAP campaign.
