Freeze Voter Records, 1983-1988 (inclusive)

Abstract:
In 1983, supporters of the nuclear freeze founded Freeze Voter, an independent Political Action Committee (PAC). In response to the growing threat of nuclear war and the proliferation of nuclear weapons, the PAC's main goal was to "elect a President and Congress who will enact a nuclear weapons Freeze between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. The Committee [will] achieve this goal through the electoral process." The organization worked on the grass-roots level to identify supporters of a nuclear freeze and encourage them to vote for pro-freeze candidates. By 1984 over $3 million had been raised and Freeze Voter was the 13 largest non0union, non-corporate PAC in the U.S. By 1988, with the ending of the Cold War, the Freeze Voter board decide to close down the organization. Remaining assets were turned over to the Professionals' Coalition for Nuclear Arms Control (which operated until 1992).

Topsfield Foundation Records, 1983-1997 (bulk)

Abstract:
The Topsfield Foundation was founded by Paul J.Aicher in 1982. Aicher, a former engineer later turned philanthropist created a Foundation to aid grassroots citizens' groups in working against nuclear proliferation. In 1984 the Foundation began publishing the state-by-state Grassroots Peace Directories to provide networking information for these organizations and the larger peace movement. In the mid-1980s Aicher created two additional projects: ACCESS, a security information service based in Washington, D.C., to further the exchange of information and viewpoints on international affairs and conflict transformation; and helped form OPTIONS to improve and deepen the debate over security policy and to increase public participation in policy formation. In the 1990s the Topsfield Foundation changed its focus to community dialogue and community building through grassroots organizations. In 2004 the Topsfield Foundation was renamed as the Paul J. Established in 1984 to strengthen peace work among Unitarian Universalists and interfaith communities, the goup was especially concerned with the international arms race and nuclear proliferation. Directors included Stephen M. Shick, Carol Powers, Stephanie Nichols. The headquarters were in Philadelphia, Pa. and sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Association. Unitarian Universalist Peace Fellowship, Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office, Unitarian Universalist Women's Federation, and the International Association for Religious Freedom; published two periodicals, Peace Network News and Nuclear Free Zone News; organized a Rapid Action Alert network to communicate concerns to elected representatives; ceased operations on November 30, 1991.

Abstract:
Greenham Women Against Cruise Missiles was organized in 1983 by a group of women who were part of the Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp in Great Britain. Several activists at Greenham organized Greenham Women Against Cruise Missiles, which sought to use the U.S. legal system to challenge the right of the U.S. government to deploy nuclear missiles on foreign soil. Although the suit was unsuccessful, a group of Greenham women traveled around the United States speaking out about the growing objections in the international community to the ongoing escalation of the nuclear arms race.

Neil Wollman (1950 - ) is a peace activist and psychologist. Beginning ca. 1984, Wollman began to pressure Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association-College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA-CREF) to engage in socially responsible investing, including divesting from companies that did business in South Africa or built nuclear weapons. Wollman helped to form the Make TIAA-CREF Ethical Coalition. He is the the author of the Graduation Pledge of Social and Environmental Responsibility (www.graduationpledge.org), and iscurrently involved with Kids Can make A Difference "to inspire students to realize that it is within their power to help eliminate hunger and poverty in their communities, country and world."

Abstract:
PRO-Peace (People Reaching Out for Peace) was a non-profit organization begun in April 1985 by David Mixner. He served as Executive Director of PRO-Peace until its collapse in March 1986. In its statement of purpose, PRO-Peace members called themselves "abolitionists" who supported efforts toward complete global nuclear disarmament. Pro-Peace staff undertook to plan a march pf 5,000 participats who would walk across the United States. On March 14, 1986 Mixner announced that PRO-Peace no longer existed. With new leadership and greatly reduced numbers, the marchers reorganized as the Great Peace March for Global Nuclear Disarmament, a grassroots, marcher-run, volunteer organization. The transcontinental trek to Washington D.C. was completed in November 1986.

Howard W. Hallman has been a peace and social justice activist since the 1950s. He was a conscientious objector during the Korean War and opposed the Vietnam war. Hallman has worked for nuclear disarmament since the 1980s, especially in an interfaith context. He is a founder of Methodists United for Peace With Justice and associated with the Interfaith Committee for Nuclear Disarmament. Hallman has been long worked for civil rights and has worked professionally as a housing and neighborhood advocate. He is author of more than 250 publications including nine books, such as Small and Large Together: Governing the Metropolis and Neighborhoods: Their Place in Urban Life.

It was formed as a lobbying and educational group to promote effective arms control legislation.

GWEN (Ground Wave Emergency Network was a grass roots organization founded in the mid 1980s. Mobilized citizens protested the establishment of a GWEN network, a plan by the U.S. Air Force to build a system of radiotowers around the U.S. for the purpose of maintaining military communications in the event of nuclear war. The GWEN Project was a national organization, headquartered in Amherst, Massachusetts. The co-directors were Nancy Foster and Lois Barber. In 1994, the U.S. Congress refused further funding for GWEN, calling it wasteful and unnecessary.

Veterans For Peace, Inc. (VFP) is an educational and humanitarian organization dedicated to the abolishment of war. VFP iss comprised primarily of veterans of the United States military, but non-veterans may also join as associate members. VFP's statement of purpose (as of 2010) states that their mission is: "To increase public awareness of the costs of war; to restrain the U.S. government from intervening, overtly and covertly, in the internal affairs of other nations; to end the arms race and to reduce and eventually eliminate nuclear weapons; to seek justice for veterans and victims of war; to abolish war as an instrument of national policy". VFP members pledge to use nonviolent, democratic means to achieve these aims.

This collection contains materials given to the donor by her aunt, June Miller Thompson. Materials include photos, media, audiotapes, and diaries related to the Great Peace March. Her writings related to peace, peaceful civil disobedience, nuclear war, and nuclear energy are also included. Her engagement in the Ribbon prior to and during August 1985, included her participation and presence (and that of her husband, Bill Willard Thompson) in Hiroshima while the Ribbon was unfolding in Washington, DC. She is the sister of Justine Merritt, the donor's mother. The collection also contains mterials given to the donor by her mother, Justine Miller Merritt. Materials include photos, books, audiotapes, VHS tapes, media, diaries, and writing related to the Ribbon, a multi-year grassroots effort to educate and motivate people to protect the earth and all that they love from the dangers of nuclear war. This organization was founded in March, 1988 as the U.S. Coalition of the International Comprehensive Test Ban Campaign. It was formed as a coalition of peace groups to raise public awareness of nuclear testing issues, and to call on governments to initiate testing moratoria and to undertake negotiations for a comprehensive test ban. Carolyn Cottom was its first Chair. The group changed name its name in 1989 to the United States Comprehensive Test Ban Coalition.

Abstract:
In 1985 six members of the National FREEZE Campaign founded American Peace Test as a direct, non violent action campaign to protest the testing of nuclear weapons at the Nevada Test Site, near Las Vegas, Nevada. The first large scale action took place in 1986, drawing large crowds of protesters. Protests throughout the 1980s continued to draw larger numbers of protesters and the support of some nationally known celebrities and politicians. In the early 1990s American Peace Test regrouped, but eventually the organization foundered. Protests at the Nevada Test Site continued through the 1990s, sometimes sponsored by other organizations and groups of protesters.

Delaware County [Pennsylvania] Pledge of Resistance (aka Delco Pledge of Resistance) was organized in the Fall of 1986. It was originally founded as a response to the threat of a U.S. invasion into Nicaragua and U.S. government's policies toward Central America. Delaware County Pledge of Resistance persisted as a local group, working for economic and social justice for oppressed people in the United States and abroad. The group disbanded in winter 2008.

Pledge of Resistance, Albany Chapter Records, 1985-1993 (bulk)

Abstract:
The Pledge of Resistance group in Albany, New York was part of an active nationwide network of grassroots organizations opposed to U.S. intervention in Central America. The Albany group was active between 1984 and 1993. Its members engaged in marches, protest demonstrations, extensive correspondence and meetings with legislators, fundraising activities, boycotts, and networking with like-minded organizations. The Albany POR produced newsletters, press releases, and leaflets. The Pledge of Resistance in Albany and the national Pledge of Resistance were dissolved in 1989.
