For more than a century the Penn Libraries have been purchasing books and manuscripts at public auction in the United States and abroad. This finding aid serves as a guide to more than 750 auction catalogs for books and manuscripts from sixteen international auction houses in Print Collection 48 as well as other catalogs from these auction houses held elsewhere in the Penn Libraries, that were collected by Penn curators and staff members.

Abstract:
Ashley Bryan (1923-2022) was an artist and storyteller best known for his award-winning children's book illustrations with particular emphasis on African folktales and African-American spirituals. Bryan authored, illustrated, published, and distributed his first book in Kindergarten, later graduating from Cooper Union and Columbia University, being awarded a Fulbright to study at the University of Freiburg, before becoming a professor at Dartmouth College. The collection documents his lifelong devotion to the arts including sketchbooks, artwork, and especially materials relating to the publication process of over sixty book projects. Arthur Bloom (born 1939), an author and scholar of American theater, studied and wrote a book on Edwin Forrest (1806-1872), a prominent Philadelphia-born actor. These include some limited original materials by and related to Forrest, extensive printout copies of newspaper articles about Forrest, contemporary scholarly publications related to Forrest and American theater, and other research materials.

Walter D. Palmer collection of materials on the Black Bottom Project and other displaced Philadelphia communities, 1875-2017 (inclusive) 1962 – 2010 (bulk)

Abstract:
The Black Bottom Project worked to document the history of the Black Bottom neighborhood of Philadelphia, with particular emphasis on the displacement of thousands of community residents following redevelopment plans endorsed by the City of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania. Over time the project expanded to look at other Philadelphia neighborhoods that experienced similar community displacement and gentrification. The catalyst for the project was the course "Neighborhood Displacement and Community Power," (Urban Studies 448) taught by Walter D. Palmer (born 1934) and the research conducted by its students over many semesters from 1995 to 2010. The collection includes original student research, public records and other documentary sources, resident interviews, a short film, and digital files and paper printouts from the creation of a website.

Abstract:
The Biddle family has a long history on American land with Quaker ancestors emigrating in 1681 and settling in Philadelphia around 1725. This collection documents the family relationships, and to a lesser extent, the work and military service of six generations of one branch of that family, starting with Clement Biddle (1740-1814), and following the descendants of two of his sons: Thomas Alexander Biddle (1776-1857) and Clement Cornell Biddle (1784-1855). These papers tell the stories, to varying degrees, of more than 30 individual Biddle family members through correspondence, financial records, professional papers, diaries, scrapbooks, and photographs.

Howard Myers Scull was a flight surgeon with the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He died in a plane crash on July 4, 1944. To celebrate Benjamin Franklin's 300th birthday, which fell on January 17, 2006, five institutions in the Philadelphia area formed in 2000 an alliance named Benjamin Franklin Tercentenary Consortium. The Consortium initiated a grand multifaceted and internationally-involving scenario for the celebration. The full name of the project is Benjamin Franklin Tercentenary, or "Ben Franklin 300, 1706-2006." This collection documents the organization, planning and operation of the Benjamin Franklin Tercentenary from the time the BFT Consortium was established in 2000 till the project was wrapped up in mid 2008.

Andre Constant Vauclain (1908-2003) was a composer and professor of music who developed a new system of composition that he called, "syntonality." Dana Dimitri Richardson (1953-), is a composer and music theorist who studied under Constant Vauclain from 1971 to 1976.

Museum Building Records, 1892-2007 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The first section of the University of Pennsylvania Museum building, designed to exhibit the large archaeological and ethnological collections amassed in the preceding twelve years, was opened in 1899. The architects, Wilson Eyre, Jr., Cope and Stewardson, and Frank Miles Day and Brother, envisioned this first section as the westernmost wing of an immense building, at least three times the size of the present museum. The second section, the Harrison Rotunda, consisting of the exhibit hall and auditorium, was added in 1915. It featured a dome constructed by Rafael Guastavino. In 1926 the Eckley B. Coxe, Jr. Egyptian Wing opened, followed by the Administrative Wing (nowadays called the "Sharpe" Wing after the third floor gallery bearing that name) in 1929. Building activity stopped after 1929 until construction began on the Academic Wing in 1969. A Philadelphia native, Jane Wright Proctor Wallis (1875-1956) was the daughter of Sarah Jane Wright and Josiah Kendall Proctor (the founder and owner of several prominent city businesses) and a mother of ten children. The Jane Wright Proctor Wallis family papers provide a glimpse into early 20th-century family life through correspondence, scrapbooks, photographs, and memorabilia. The collection dates from 1833 to 2007, revealing a pride in the history and genealogy of the Proctor Wallis family across its many generations. In addition to familial topics, this collection features many materials documenting events of the early 20th Century as well as various Philadelphia-area social and charitable clubs.

Abstract:
The Gotham Book Mart (1920-2006) was one of New York City's most iconic bookstores during the 20th century. Founded by Frances Steloff (1887-1989), the daughter of poor Russian-Jewish immigrants, the Book Mart became a social center for the New York literati and a focal point for literary modernism in the United States. Steloff's successor, independent literary manuscript dealer Andreas Brown (1933-), maintained the store's focus on avant garde and small press publications while incorporating his own interests in postcards and genealogy. This collection contains 91 boxes of material relating to the daily operation of the Book Mart; correspondence, biographical, and legal material from both Brown and Steloff; postcard and genealogical material collected by Brown; photographs of the store, its employees, and events which took place there; and manuscripts and ephemera offered for sale.

Chef Fritz Blank Victus Populi collection, 1874-2005 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Chef Fritz Blank (1942 August 25 – 2014 September 9) was a prominent chef, restaurateur, and gastronome during the beginnings of Philadelphia's second-wave restaurant renaissance in the 1980s. His Victus Populi collection comprises over 3,000 recipe booklets, pamphlets, and cookbooks but constitutes only a small subset of Chef Fritz Blank's enormous cookbook library that was set apart by its focus on the American consumer and home cook. Blank titled the collection Victus Populi (Latin for "Food of the People") because he saw these pamphlets as one of the best sources of historical information about purchasing, cooking, and consumption habits of the American public in the 20th century. Many of the items appear to be promotional items or product premiums, often produced using relatively inexpensive materials and, as evidenced by extensive wear-and-tear and the occasional spatter, heavily used in household kitchens.

Hui-lin Li was educated at Soochow University and Yenching University in China and received his PhD in biology from Harvard University in 1942. After holding a number of research fellowship positions in both the United States and Taiwan, he came to the University of Pennsylvania as a research associate in 1952 and became a faculty member in the field of botany in 1963. The collections documents the professional career and life of Dr. Li as a professor of botany and researcher.

A gift of historian of pharmacy and medicine Dr. William H. Helfand, this collection of ex-votos and devotional paintings on medical subjects offers insight into Mexican religious folk practices. Ex-votos are votive paintings usually hung in churches and religious venues as a sign of gratitude for received blessings or healings. The collection includes ex-votos dated between 1868 and 2002 and dedicated to Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint James the Moor-slayer, Saint Paschal Baylon, Saint Barbara, Saint Judas Thaddeus, Saint Nicholas, and Saint Cosmas.
