Abstract:
This collection documents the founding, flourishing and eventual closing of the Presbyterian School of Nursing, a hospital-based nursing school in Philadelphia. The hospital itself was founded in 1871 under the sponsorship of the Presbyterian Church. Its nurse training program was begun in 1889. The collection's strength is the relative completeness of student records, good documentation of the school's curricula and teaching materials. The supportive role both the Ladies Aid Society and the Alumni Association played in the growth of the School are evident in these records.

Annie Warburton Goodrich is best known for establishing the United States Student Nurse Reserve, more commonly known as the Army School of Nursing, in 1918-1919. The collection also includes a typed manuscript of Harriett Rose (Berger) Koch's biography, America's Militant Angel.

This collection documents the Brandywine Home Health Agency, Inc. from its inception through its subsequent growth during social, environmental, and legislative changes. As a non-profit volunteer agency, BHHA was conscious of its responsibility to foster innovative and relevant programs. Thus as health needs and technology evolved, it progressed accordingly. Over time, it became a multi-service agency delivering three categories of service: therapeutic, supportive, and preventative. Michail M. Dorizas was an athlete, coach, educator, and traveler. He received his Ph.D. in 1924 from the University of Pennsylvania and taught economic and political geography at the Wharton School from 1919-1929 as an Instructor and from 1929-1957 as Assistant Professor. Correspondence between Mike Dorizas and Benjamin Rose Hoffman make up almost the entirety of this collection and cover topics such as wrestling and other sporting activities at the University of Pennsylvania, travel, service during World War I, and his early teaching career at the University.

Helen Octavia Dickens was the first female African American board-certified OB/GYN in Philadelphia a member faculty in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. The Helen O. Dickens Papers document the latter half of Dickens' career in the field of medicine, medical education and public health. The collection contains correspondence, articles, reprints, grant proposals and some notes regarding Dickens' work in teenage pregnancy during the 1960s and 1970s which can be found in the Medical and Correspondence series.
