Kite-Bassett Family Papers, 1837-1930 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Kite and Bassett families were Orthodox Quakers from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Lynn, Massachusetts, respectively. James Kite was born in 1808, the son of Benjamin and Rebecca Kite of Philadelphia. In 1837 he was granted a certificate to Salem Monthly Meeting in Massachusetts to marry Lydia B. Rodman, widow of Caleb Rodman and daughter of Isaac and Ruth Bassett of Lynn. James and Lydia had eight children, viz. Ruth, James Rodman, Eliza B., Rebecca, Isaac C. Bassett, Hannah B., Lydia and Abby; Eliza and Isaac died young. James died in 1856 at the age of 48. Lydia B., a minister in Philadelphia Monthly Meeting for the Northern District, died in 1872 at the age of 60 years. Ruth Kite married Jacob Smedley Jr. in 1865. Holmes-Webb Family Papers, 1839-1972 (inclusive)

Abstract:
William B. Webb was a druggist and member of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting of Friends (Hicksite). He married Rebecca Turner in 1853. Their youngest daughter, Rebecca St. Claire Webb, married Jessie Herman Holmes in 1892. Holmes was a prominent Quaker, taught philosophy and religion at Swarthmore College, and was active in AFSC relief in Europe after World War I. He also served as President of the National Federation of Religious Liberals and was an active member of the Socialist Party. The collection includes correspondence of the Webb and Holmes families, journals of Jesse Herman and Rebecca W. Holmes, and other miscellaneous materials. Of particular interest is the correspondence between the Holmes during his trip overseas and several letters from S. R. Sharma concerning the early Indian self-determination movement and the work of Mahatma Gandhi from 1930 to 1934.

Abstract:
The collection contains papers concerning the Eyre family, Pennsylvania Quakers. descendents of Isaac and Eleanor (Cooper) Eyre, of Philadelphia and Bucks County. Isaac Eyre (1778-1843) was a prominent Philadelphia shipbuilder. In 1828, he removed to a farm in Bucks County, Pa. William Eyre (1804-1885) was their oldest son, a Philadelphia master builder. His brother, Isaac (1819-1904) was a farmer and promoter of the railroad from Bucks County, Pa. He was also one of the founders of the George School, Newtown, Pa., and active in Quaker concerns. The collection contains correspondence of Isaac Eyre largely to Isaac Hicks (1815-1900) Quaker interests, prominent Friends, farming, and railroad projects; also eighteen diaries of William Eyre (1840-1880, gaps 1841-1849 and 1855-1857, microfilmed), and some miscellaneous family material.

George A. Walton (1883-1969) was the long-time headmaster of the George School, a Quaker boarding school in Newtown, Pennsylvania. He succeeded his father as headmaster in 1912 and served until 1948. After his retirement, he continued to be active in Quaker organizations and concerns, including the reunification of the Society of Friends in 1955. He was a member of Newtown Monthly Meeting. This small collection includes George D. Cock's journal in two bound volumes of his trip in 1843 from his home in Brownsville, Pennsylvania, through Quaker communities in the East, including Philadelphia and Baltimore. The journal includes comments on his courtship of Susan W. Smith, who he married in 1845. The collection also includes a balance sheet from 1843 on freight carried, his marriage certificate, and a letter from his daughter, Marion Cock, which includes family information.

Abstract:
The collection is composed of two family scrapbooks and acid-free copies. In 1894-1895, James M. Price researched information and correspondence concerning the time his aunt and uncle, Philip and Matilda Price, spent in the utopian community of New Harmony, Indiana, 1825-1826. Copies and some of his original correspondence were mounted into an old account book. In 1929, Susanna M. Price, his daughter, compiled a scrapbook containing family history, reminiscences, and photographs.

Robbins Family Papers, 1849-1934 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This small collection concerning the Robbins family, Quakers who owned the historic Seven Stars Tavern property in Salem County, New Jersey, was compiled by John H. Bourne. The Robbins family purchased the tavern about 1805, and the property remained in the family until it was purchased by John H. Bourne in 1927. The Robbins family belonged to Pilesgrove Monthly Meeting (Hicksite), which in 1928 became Woodstown Monthly Meeting. John Bourne also was a member of Woodstown Monthly Meeting. The collection contains some genealogical information on the Robbins family and correspondence and articles concerning the Seven Stars property, as well as poetry, prose, and a diary (1875) of Annie Lawrie Robbins (1828-1916), the unmarried Robbins daughter who kept house in the Seven Stars homestead, and other family material. In addition to the history of the property, the collection, particularly the diary, offers insight into the life of rural South Jersey Quakers in the late nineteenth century.

Abstract:
William Walker Stephens (1824-1902) was the son of Hannah Walker and Stephen Stephens of Chester Valley, Pennsylvania. The family were members of Valley Preparative and Radnor Monthly Meetings of Friends. William Walker Stephens worked as a businessman in Philadelphia and was married three times. His relation, J. Aubrey Anderson, was district attorney in Conshohocken, Pa. Papers include the diaries and day books of Hannah W. Stephens, 1857-1864, William W. Stephens, 1850-1902, and Annie R. Stephens, 1903. Also includes the account book of William W. Stephens, and the correspondence of J. Aubrey Anderson, chief of the Norristown division of the American Protective League, concerning their investigations.

Letters from his parents, Barak and Mary Smith, of Springdale, Iowa, and other relations mention farm life and family concerns.

Rebecca Timbres Clark Papers, 1853-1999 [bulk 1920-1990] (inclusive)

Abstract:
Rebecca Timbres Clark (1896-2000) was a Quaker nurse and social worker. She and her first husband, Harry Garland Timbres (1899-1937), performed relief work under the auspices of the AFSC in Eastern Europe in 1921-22 and worked with Rabindranath Tagore in Bengal, India, in 1931-34. In 1936-1937, the couple worked in the malaria unit in Soviet Russia. After Harry Timbres' death, Rebecca returned to the U.S. She married Edgar Sydenham Clark (1885-1961) on July 2, 1943, and the couple moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1947, where Rebecca worked as a medical social worker. The collection contains extensive correspondence, journals (1913-1989), biographical data, articles, speeches, reviews, poetry, pictures, and memorabilia. Correspondents include Charles Freer Andrews, Rabindranath Tagore, and Horace Alexander.

Abstract:
Martha Schofield (1839-1916) was a Hicksite Quaker teacher from Pennsylvania who founded the Schofield Normal and Industrial School in Aiken, S. C., in 1868 to provide education for formerly enslaved people. The School gradually evolved into a boarding school for training young blacks in industrial trades or to become teachers. It was absorbed into the public school system in 1952. Martha Fell Schofield was born Feb. 1, 1839, near Newtown, Bucks County, PA. She was the daughter of Oliver W. Schofield and Mary (Jackson) Schofield. Both her parents were involved in reform activities, including abolition, temperance, women's rights, and improved education. She died Feb. 1, 1916. This collection contains biographical information, personal correspondence (1856-1916), and writings (primarily diaries, 1858-1903) by Martha Schofield. Zebedee Haines (1843-1923) was a Quaker who was active in the work of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of Friends and of its Indian Committee in the late 19th century. Zebedee was also a student, teacher, administrator, and school committee member at Westtown School. The Haines family ran a dairy farm in West Grove, Pennsylvania. The collection contains family correspondence and diaries. Also includes letters of Zebedee Haines to his wife, describing his visits to Tunesassa and to native American groups in Nova Scotia with Joseph S. Elkinton in 1903, and of his daughter, Mary Elizabeth Haines, who taught at Tunesassa from 1908-09.

Abstract:
The collection contains correspondence received by Anna W. Stout who attended the Preparative Department at Swarthmore College from 1884 to 1886 and then moved to Grand Meadow, Minn. Five letters are from Albert M. Johnson; four from Arabella Carter; and a single letter (1886) is from Alice Bowman Comly at Swarthmore which mentions improvements at the College made on the observatory and a new track and grandstand. The bulk of the letters (18) are from her cousin Frank W. Hibbs, a student at the Naval Academy at Annapolis who became a Navy officer. There also is an 1864 letter from William M. Weckerly to Samuel R. Stout that informs him of his acceptance into a fraternal society in Philadelphia.

Abstract:
Contains the records of the Friends Instruction Association including minutes and financial records, receipts from stores, and published bylaws. Friends Instruction Association was organized in 1873 by Philadelphia Quaker women as A Mothers Meeting. Originally part of the Penn Sewing School, the group incorporated in 1876 as Friends Instruction Association. Philadelphia Monthly Meeting provided a meeting space in the Race Street meeting house. Its purpose was to provide poor women regardless of race, religion or nationality with the life skills to improve their condition and to furnish them with clothing. The group was disbanded in December 1891 because of declining numbers and because its mission was being fulfilled by other charitable organizations.

Alice C. Paxson Hadley (1857-1919) was the daughter of Frederick and Lydia Betts Paxson, Philadelphia Hicksite Quakers. She was a founding member of the Thread and Needle Society, a social and charitable club of young Friends. Alice kept a diary that recorded events and meetings of the group 1873 to 1880 which were transcribed by her granddaughter, and she collected memorabilia and speeches she presented.

Donald M. Yoder (1921-2015) was a prominent scholar, folklorist, and author specializing in Pennsylvania folklife, recognized for establishing the term "folklife" in American academics. His primary focus was on Pennsvlvania German folklife, but he also had an interest in traditional Quaker culture and arts (meeting house architecture, dolls and crafts, etc.), in part due to his genealogy as part of the Quaker Wickersham family. This collection contains personal, professional, and genealogical research papers of Don Yoder, especially those relating to Quaker matters. Included are correspondence, Yoder's writings and research relating to Quaker social life and customs, and genealogical research, particularly Wickersham family genealogy and research materials.

Friends Reading Circle of Media was a Quaker book group established in 1877 in Media, Pennsylvania, for the purpose of discussing Quaker and other religious writings and as a social gathering for Friends. This collection contains its minutes, 1877-1891. Also included are minutes of the Friends Reading Circle for the Northern District, 1875-1876, whose secretary, Elton B. Gifford, moved to the Media area in 1877.

John Russell Hayes (1866-1945) was a Quaker educator, poet, and Librarian of Swarthmore College, 1906-1927 and Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College, 1927-1935. The collection contains letters received by Hayes, 1887-1936, diaries covering the period 1880-1935, and miscellaneous papers including an album of collected manuscript samples of contemporary poets. The diaries include poetry and cover personal and Swarthmore College activities and concerns.
