Overview and metadata sections

Anna W. Stout (1869-1935) attended the Swarthmore College Preparative Department from 1884 to early 1886. Her family had Quaker roots in Bucks County, and many of her classmates at Swarthmore were members of the Society of Friends. Circa 1886, her parents, Samuel Rodman and Jane Matilda Hibbs Stout, moved to Grand Meadow. In Minnesota, Anna studied at Albert Lea College, and in 1890 she married Philip T. Elliott. After leaving Swarthmore, she corresponded with her cousin Frank W. Hibbs, a student at the U.S. Naval Academy who was raised in Albert Lea. In addition to a few letters from her mother, she received letters from former classmates of the Preparative School. Albert M. Johnson was a member of Byberry Monthly Meeting and later Philadelphia Monthly Meeting (Hicksite). Arabella Carter (1867-1932), for whom a Swarthmore College award to celebrate alumni volunteer work is named, was a member of Byberry Monthly Meeting and an activist for peace and social justice. Alice Bowman Comly (1868-1898), was a member of Byberry Monthly Meeting in which the Comly family was prominent.
