Howard Hospital was organized in 1853 as a charity hospital to provide medical care for factory workers who lived in the western part of Philadelphia. The Howard Hospital Records document the administrative activities of the Hospital during the early Twentieth Century.

Office of Athletic Communications Records, 1923-1951 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The University of Pennsylvania's Department of Athletic Communications, originally titled the Department of Athletic Publicity, was founded as a subdivision of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics on July 1, 1924. Its main duties, which have remained basically the same since its inception, are to act as a liaison to the media, to prepare press releases, to distribute press credentials for athletic contests, and to arrange interviews with athletes and coaches at the University. The Department of Athletic Communications Records primarily contains press releases and correspondence from the department during the period 1935-1951, with an unusually high concentration of material from the 1950-51 academic year.

While trying to secure the patent for the ENIAC, serious problems for the patent rights of John Presper Eckert, Jr. and John William Mauchly arose in the 1960's. The ENIAC Papers are divided into two major series, viz., one, Sperry Rand Corporation, John P. Eckert, Jr., and John W. Mauchly vs. Bell Telephone, Incorporated; and two, Honeywell, Incorporated vs. Sperry Rand Corporation and Illinois Scientific Developments, Incorporated.

Anthony Nicholas Brady Garvan came to the University of Pennsylvania in 1950 as a Fellow in American Civilization. He was appointed Assistant Professor in American Civilization in 1951, and in 1960 was appointed the first Professor in American Civilization and Department Chair at the University of Pennsylvania. The Anthony Nicholas Brady Garvan Papers primarily document the professional and academic activities of Garvan, with the addition of a small grouping of personal papers relating to his family and interests in hunting and travel.

Abstract:
Otto Meyerhof was a German-born biochemist, who won the 1923 Nobel Prize in Medicine with Archibald Vivian Hill, for his work on muscle metabolism. He emigrated to the United States in 1940 to escape Nazi Germany, and accepted a position at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine as professor of biochemistry. This small but important collection documents a range of professional and personal activities of Otto Meyerhof, and consists of correspondence and professional papers.

Abstract:
From 1884 to 1888 William Osler was a professor of clinical medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. While at Penn, he continued his clinical investigations, spending many hours in the postmortem rooms performing autopsies. This collection consists primarily of published works by William Osler, many inscribed with the name "Alexander Randall" inside the front cover. The other item is a published memoir, by Arthur Ames Bliss, of his experience as a resident physician at Blockely Hospital (later Philadelphia General Hospital) in 1883 and 1884.

Fairman Rogers graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with an A. B. in 1853 and an A. M. in 1856, and served the University as Professor of Civil Engineering until 1864 and then as a Trustee from 1871 to 1886. He also surveys of the Potomac River for the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey. The collection consists of a scrapbook, a diary and 27 other items, including letters, memos, meeting minutes, lists of students, lecture notes, receipts, accounts, and circulars kept during his tenure as Professor.

Cornelius Nolen Weygandt was born in Philadelphia in 1832 and had a career in banking at the Western Bank, located on the south side of Chestnut Street just west of Fourth Street, in the heart of Philadelphia's nineteenth-century financial district and lived most of his married life in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. The Cornelius Nolen Weygandt Papers consists of personal diaries and related correspondence and ephemera that chronicle Weygandt's life from 1849 – 1907.

Hui-lin Li was educated at Soochow University and Yenching University in China and received his PhD in biology from Harvard University in 1942. After holding a number of research fellowship positions in both the United States and Taiwan, he came to the University of Pennsylvania as a research associate in 1952 and became a faculty member in the field of botany in 1963. The collections documents the professional career and life of Dr. Li as a professor of botany and researcher.

Abstract:
Dr. Stuart Mudd and his wife, Dr. Emily Hartshorne Mudd were two outstanding members of the University of Pennsylvania faculty. Dr. Stuart Mudd served the Medical School's Pathology Department and was a world-renowned microbiologist hailed for his work in freeze-drying blood plasma and combating patient infections in hospitals. Dr. Emily Hartshorne Mudd served as the founder and Director of the Marriage Council of Philadelphia, and as Professor of Family Study in the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Pennsylvania. This collection contains assorted published articles by both Stuart and Emily Mudd largely in the form of journal articles or offprints of journal articles.

Between 1801 and 1803 Benjamin Woolsey Dwight studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where he also practiced at Pennsylvania Hospital, and at Columbia College in New York. Francis E. Dwight was the grandson of Benjamin Woolsey Dwight. In 1882 he took medical instructions at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York, New York. Dwight Papers contain material relating to their medical education - mainly notebooks for lectures attended, and admission cards for Benjamin Woolsey Dwight.

U.S. Army 20th General Hospital Records, 1932-1952 (inclusive) 1942-1945 (bulk)

In 1940 the United States Surgeon-General called upon the University of Pennsylvania to organize an overseas military hospital along the lines of the successful civilian Base Hospital No. 20 organized by the University in France during World War I. As a result, a Penn medical faculty committee organized the 20th General Hospital, a World War II medical facility which would operate in the Assam jungle region of northeast India on a scale and duration even greater than Penn's earlier wartime medical achievement in France. These records focus on the activities and medical research of the 20th General Hospital from the time of its deployment to Camp Claiborne in May of 1942 until the unit's disbandment at the end of World War II.

R. Tait (Robert Tait) McKenzie Papers, 1880-1940 (inclusive)

Abstract:
R. Tait McKenzie, physician, physical therapist, physical educator, and sculptor, served the University of Pennsylvania as its first Professor of Physical Education, 1904 -1929. Wishing to be relieved of the administrative work required of his position, McKenzie took a year's leave of absence in 1929-1930 and in 1931 was appointed J. William White Research Professor of Physical Education. His new post permitted him to focus his efforts almost exclusively on his sculpture. The collection of R. Tait McKenzie documents the entire span of his career, as physician, educator, and sculptor.

Aaron T. Beck (1922-2022) was a psychiatrist, known for his work with Cognitive Behavior Therapy. Beck Psychopathology Research Center, and founder of the Beck Institute. The Aaron T. Beck papers document his personal and professional life, including Beck's academic, research and clinical career. To celebrate Benjamin Franklin's 300th birthday, which fell on January 17, 2006, five institutions in the Philadelphia area formed in 2000 an alliance named Benjamin Franklin Tercentenary Consortium. The Consortium initiated a grand multifaceted and internationally-involving scenario for the celebration. The full name of the project is Benjamin Franklin Tercentenary, or "Ben Franklin 300, 1706-2006." This collection documents the organization, planning and operation of the Benjamin Franklin Tercentenary from the time the BFT Consortium was established in 2000 till the project was wrapped up in mid 2008.

Daniel Isaacman attended the University of Pennsylvania where he earned his B.A. in 1948 and M.A. degree in 1951. During the Second World War, he served with the U.S. Army in Europe and worked with the Jewish Brigade in Antwerp, Belgium in an attempt to reunite decimated Jewish families with their children. The bulk of the collection is comprised of personal letters to and from "Danny" Isaacman during a pivotal period of his life, particularly during his service in World War II.

Dr. J. William White received his M.D. and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1871. He began his career at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1874, and rose through the ranks as a surgeon and specialist in Venereal Diseases. In 1912 White was named a Trustee of the University of Pennsylvania. White was also active in Philadelphia's civic life, and made extensive annual trips to Europe. The J. William White collection consists of scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, diaries in manuscript form and typescripts of those diaries, diplomas and certificates, pamphlets and books written by and about White and his family, and letters from White's voyage on Professor Louis Agassiz's Hassler Expedition of 1872.

The fields of anthropology and archaeology were where Percy Madeira's passions lie.
