Stephen Grellet travel papers, 1800-1813 (bulk)

Abstract:: The collection contains travel minutes for Stephen Grellet's ministry in 1800-1805 in the northeastern U.S., a copy of Stephen Grellet's account of the religious conversion of a Swede who was called upon to preach to pirates, and the original and a manuscript copy of Grellet's religious epistle dated 24, 6mo, 1813, to New York Monthly Meeting, sent from Morlaix, France.

Wing family papers, 1788-1857 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The collection contains journals and two commonplace books, business papers, and a few family letters. It includes a small journal written by a young woman (unknown) on a trip from New York City to Poughkeepsie, 6 month 1835; an album, 1834, which contains a list of the scholars and teachers at Nine Partners Boarding School, and an undated commonplace book containing copies of Quaker sermons and other writings. A Friends Pocket Almanac for the year 1857 contains brief notes concerning family events and Quaker meetings. Correspondence includes two letters from James Wing to his family and a letter, 1844 from M[oses?] Wanzer, Jr., of New Fairfield, Connecticut, to Joseph E. Macomber of Farmington; the two apparently had been classmates at Nine Partners School. Miscellaneous business and legal papers, 1788-1853, concern the Wing, Arnold, and Carpenter families.

Abstract:: This collection includes the journal of Ruth Anne Hillborn from 1864-1868. She relates events concerning the emancipation of enslaved people, the U. S. Civil War, and the Presidency of Abraham Lincoln. She also describes Lucretia Mott and her ministry. This collection also includes miscellaneous poetry, a facsimile letter to the Women's Aid Association of Philadelphia about efforts in freedman's relief, a letter from John Bailey on Quaker ministry, and extracts from an account of the death of George F. White.

Pemberton Manuscripts, 1756-1812 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The collection contains primarily family correspondence of the three Pemberton brothers -- Israel, James, and John, prominent members of the Society of Friends in Philadelphia who were exiled to Virginia during the Revolutionary War for their pacifism. It also includes a small number of correspondence from Edward Stabler and Alexander White, an account on the life of James Pemberton, and the will of his wife, Phebe Lewis Pemberton. Topics include the Pembertons' exile to Winchester, Va., with other Quakers during the Revolution as conscientious objectors, Quaker ministers, the disposition of the estate of Anthony Benezet, and Quaker concerns especially pacifism.

Lippincott Family Papers, 1752-2010 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Horace Mather Lippincott (1877-1967) was a Quaker editor and historian. The collection contains his speeches and writings on topics primarily concerning the Society of Friends and the history of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Of particular interest is the scrapbook he compiled in 1946 of papers and photographs of the 1913-1914 Joint Group which met weekly to study the Separation in the Society of Friends, along with other papers on the topic and on the first joint meeting of the two Philadelphia Yearly Meetings in 1946. The collection includes genealogical research by Horace Mather Lippincott and his brother George E. Lippincott, deeds, and some family papers.

Howland-Shearman Family Correspondence, 1800-1916 (inclusive) 1832-1899 (bulk)

Abstract:: The collection is composed of correspondence of the family of David Sands Shearman and his wife, Hepsa Hathaway Howland Shearman of New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Poughkeepsie, New York. The Shearman and Howlands were prominent New England Quaker merchant and whaling families, intertwined by business and marriage. Much of the correspondence is directed to Hepsa, largely from her children who pursued a range of careers. Early correspondence is with her husband Captain David Sands Shearman, her siblings, and his relations and contains business and family information from New Bedford, MA, and Poughkeepsie, NY.

Henry Drinker Letters to Isaac Hicks, 1801, 1817 (inclusive) 1801 (bulk) (bulk)

Abstract:: Henry Drinker (1734-1809) was a successful Philadelphia Quaker merchant and served as clerk of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting. A prominent New York City merchant, Isaac Hicks (1767-1820) was a cousin of the Quaker artist and minister Edward Hicks and of Quaker minister Elias Hicks. Drinker and Hicks were close friends and acted as business agents for each other, reflected in the 1801 correspondence. As prominent members of the Society of Friends, they were active in Quaker concerns, including education. A single letter from Henry Drinker's son, Henry S. Drinker, dated September 3, 1817, acknowledges Hicks's receipt of funds forwarded to support the education of the children of Thomas Potts, a English merchant in Honduras.

John Woolman Manuscripts Collection, 1720-1939 (inclusive)

Abstract:: John Woolman (1720-1772) was one of the most influential ministers in the history of the Religious Society of Friends. He was particularly active in opposing slavery and encouraging Quakers to disavow the practice. His journal, published posthumously, is still considered an important document in the fields of religion, history, and literature. The Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College holds several versions of Woolman's manuscript journal, letters written by Woolman, and other assorted documents.

Abstract:: Early in their history, Quakers developed "queries," a series of questions, to assess the state of the religious society and guide personal and communal self-reflection. Queries are formulated by the Yearly Meetings for their constituent meetings, who in turn give reports to Yearly Meeting. Abstract:: The John family is a Quaker family of Uwchlan and Shamokin Valley in Pennsylvania. Some of the family later moved to Illinois but continued to be active in Friends organizations. This collection consists primarily of card photos of the John family, along with some prints and negatives of scenes.
