National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges Oral History Project, 2004-2008 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Oral History Project was begun by the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges (NCBJ) at its 2004 Annual Meeting. The purpose of the project was to record interviews in which past presidents of the NCBJ reminisced about the organization and the role they played in it. The project later expanded to encompass oral histories of prominent bankruptcy judges. The collection chiefly includes oral histories recorded with past presidents of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges. Accruals to this project include prominent members of the NCBJ who may or may not be former presidents.

Abstract:
Mary Davies Scott (born in 1944) earned her J.D. from the University of Arkansas, Little Rock, in 1978. Scott was appointed Bankruptcy Judge to the Eastern District of the United States Federal Court in 1987, where she remained until her retirement in 2002. From 1996 to 2002, she served as a member of the Bankruptcy Appellate Panel of the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. Scott is a member of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, where she has served in a number of leadership roles. She has served on the Board of Directors of the American College of Bankruptcy since 2002. Scott planned and taught at various workshops and seminars for the Federal Judicial Center, an organization that provides continuing education to the federal judiciary, including bankruptcy judges. Abstract:
Henry J. Sommer is one of the leading figures in bankruptcy and consumer law. Born in 1949 in Rochester, New York, Sommer received his JD cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1974. After graduating from Harvard, he worked for Community Legal Services in Philadelphia as Project Head of its Consumer Law Project until 1996. In addition to his role with Community Legal Services, Sommer has served on bankruptcy rules committees and worked as editor-in-chief of Collier on Bankruptcy. The Henry J. Sommer Papers, 1966-2014, include National Bankruptcy Conference papers, materials from Continuing Legal Education seminars and other meetings at which Sommer lectured, copies of published manuscripts written by Sommer, and other material related to Sommer's work with consumer law and legal reform.

Abstract:
Harry Dixon Jr. (1944-2006), a lawyer from Nebraska, wanted to form an organization with the dual purpose of providing Congress with unbiased views on legislation and creating an institution that could keep the bankruptcy community aware of legislative activities affecting them. In February 1982, Dixon incorporated under Nebraska law this new organization which was to be called the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI). The records of the American Bankruptcy Institute document two main areas of the organization: the history and operating activities of the American Bankruptcy Institute and the organization's professional activities, publications, and research on bankruptcy related issues. The materials date from 1982-2013, with the bulk from 1985-1996. Judge David H. Adams is a retired American bankruptcy attorney and judge, having practiced privately many years and served as a US Bankruptcy Court judge. This collection includes his personal materials ranging from 1984-2006, consisting mainly of materials concerning the National Conference of Bankruptcy judges, in which Judge Adams was heavily involved, on its Board of Governors from 1996-1999, its secretary in 2000, and its president in 2004. The collection includes much correspondence between NCBJ members from 1984-2006, event and conference data from many of the yearly NCBJ conferences, as well as budget, committee, and resolution data from those years, illustrating the planning processes and behind the scenes information about the NCBJ and its activities, members, and meetings.

American Law Institute Statement of Essential Human Rights Project records, 1924-2008 (inclusive)

Abstract:
In the midst of World War II, the American Law Institute convened a committee in 1941 to study the international community's position regarding human rights law. The committee's charge was to develop a Statement of Essential Human Rights. William Draper Lewis, then Director of the American Law Institute, was chair of the committee and the project's most outspoken advocate, touring the world to deliver speeches on the importance of a code of basic human rights. International in scope and in participation, the committee included representatives from Britain, Canada, China, France, pre-Nazi Germany, Italy, India, Latin America, Poland, Soviet Russia, Spain, and Syria. A version of the Statement of Essential Human Rights was finalized in 1945. In 2004 the Governing Council of UNIDROIT adopted the Principles of Transnational Civil Procedure prepared by a joint American Law Institute/UNIDROIT Study Group. Lawrence Waggoner is considered a prominent figure in law reform in the field of wills, trusts, and future interests. Not only did Waggoner teach law for 44 years, he also had an influential role outside the classroom. He served as adviser for the Restatement (Third) of Trusts, reporter for the Restatement (Third) of Property, Wills, and Other Donative Transfers, director of research for the Joint Editorial Board for Uniform Trusts and Estates Acts, reporter for the Uniform Probate Code which he completed the revisions for in 2008, and one of his last publications was the last volume of the Restatement (Third) of Property: Wills and Other Donative Transfers. Abstract:
The Judge Norma L. Shapiro papers, 1957-2016, consist of material from Shapiro's time as a federal judge and her active involvement in legal organizations. Norma Levy Shapiro attended the University of Pennsylvania Law School (now known as the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School) from 1949 to 1951. In August 1978, President Jimmy Carter nominated Shapiro to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, making her the first female judge to serve in this district. Shapiro gained national recognition for several cases that she presided over, including Harris v. City of Philadelphia. The collection contains correspondence, case notes, speeches, and meeting minutes that document Shapiro's work on Harris v. City of Philadelphia, her service to the Eastern District Court, and her involvement in professional legal organizations.

Abstract:
The Judge Arlin Adams papers, 1945-2012, consist of correspondence, awards, and articles that document Judge Adams' research interests and community involvement. Arlin Adams graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School (now known as the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School) in 1946. In 1969, President Nixon nominated Judge Adams to the Third Circuit Court. Judge Adams spent seventeen years on the bench before retiring in 1988 and returning to private practice at Schander Harrison Segal and Lewis. This collection primarily contains material from Judge Adams work with professional, charitable, and educational organizations after he retired from the federal bench. Other material includes research files from his time lecturing at Penn Law and source material for speeches that he wrote.

Abstract:
Henry N. Michael was an anthropologist and geographer whose research on growth rings in ancient bristlecone pine trees allowed him to develop Carbon 14 calibration, or “correcting scale.” This scale helped to resolve problems in radiocarbon dating in archaeology. Dr. Michael also published a number of works translated from Russian on various aspects of Arctic archaeology and ethnography, along with folklore of Arctic people. Holdings include research and field notes on his trips to the White Mountains in California to collect bristlecone pine samples, testing of wood samples at the Penn Museum Radiocarbon Lab, and notes and drafts of publications and translations.

Tikal Project, 1948-2008 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The planning for the Tikal Project began in the mid 1940s when Museum President Percy C. Madeira along with engineer John Dimick and Board member Samuel B. Eckert conceived of a ten year long expedition to the Maya site in the dense forest region of Guatemala. Previous expeditions to investigate the Maya necessarily focused on more accessible sites such as Piedras Negras, Copan, Uxmal and Chichen Itza. Following the construction of a landing strip by the Guatemalan Air Force in 1950 the first scientists arrived in January 1956 for what would turn out to be a thirteen year expedition. For ten of the thirteen years, the project was directed by William Robertson Coe who accomplished major excavations in the Great Plaza, North Terrace and Acropolis sections of the project. Coe also conceptualized the data collection system and reporting guidelines that resulted in the publication of the seventeen volume Tikal Reports. Ian Hamilton Finlay (1925-2006) was a Scottish poet, artist, and landscape and garden designer, best known for his prints and pamphlets and his iconic garden Little Sparta, a collaboration with his second wife, Sue MacDonald-Lockhart. Graeme Moore is an English landscape and garden designer and critic, and former head gardener of Little Sparta. This collection contains material collected by Graeme Moore related to his relationship with Ian Hamilton Finlay and Finlay's work.

The papers document the literary career, professional endeavors, rabbinical work, and personal life of 20th-century writer Chaim Potok. The collection comprises personal and professional correspondence, writings, lectures, sermons, research, drawings, promotional material, contracts, memorabilia, and letters from admirers. Potok's writing process can be traced from conception to publication: from notebooks for ideas, outlines, hand-written drafts, and annotated typescripts and galleys. Some works took on many forms and required several collaborations: one example, The Chosen, his first novel, published in 1967, was adapted into a film, a musical, and a play. There are over 1500 correspondents, including colleagues, family members, and friends. Potok's working and social relationships are demonstrated in letters with his editor, Robert Gottlieb, and with scholars such as Jonas C. Greenfield, Moshe Greenberg, and Nahum M. Sarna.
