Abstract:
The Female Anti-Slavery Sewing Society's mission was to: "We organise ourselves a Sewing Society, for the purpose of relieving the sufferings of that class of our countrymen, who have fled from the oppression which they endured under the unjust laws of our country, and found a refuge in Canada." The minutes do not indicate location, founding or ending dates for the Society. The collection includes one book from 1852 - 1854 which begins with the mission of the society, and otherwise includes informal minutes, listings for material and financial donations given by memberships, and the number of people at each meeting.

James Robertson photographs collection, circa 1854 (inclusive)

Abstract:
James Robertson was one of the first prominent traveller-photographers to depict scenes of mid-nineteenth century Greece. Of Scottish descent, he has been identified as the engraver James Robertson, who worked in London around 1830. He first settled in Constantinople in 1841, where he spent forty years of his life working as a master engraver in the imperial mint. His photography career began in the early 1850's when he opened a photographer's studio in Peran, the European district of Constantinople. His photographs, which were immediately popular among the art lovers of his period, appeared in international exhibitions in Paris and London and were frequently reproduced in the leading periodical "The London Illustrated News". He died in 1888 in Yokohama. Philippos Margaritēs photographs collection, 1854 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Philippos Margaritēs studied painting in Rome and taught drawing in Athens. Around 1846 he met Philibert Perraud in Athens, where Perraud taught him photography. Margaritēs thereafter established the first photography studio in Greece, based out of his house, where he photographed Athens' high society. He was active as a photographer from the early 1850s until around 1863. Margaritēs specialized in portraits and topographical views. He was believed to have taught his drawing students about the principles of photography, but he did not instruct them in the practical darkroom techniques. In addition to daguerreotypes, Margaritēs produced salt prints and albumen prints and also made cartes-de-visite [http://www.getty.edu/art/gettyguide/artMakerDetails?maker=1739]. Consists of an open collection of photographs by Greece's first professional photographer, Philippos Margaritēs.

Abstract:
Papers of the Jabez Jenkins family of Pennsylvania, 1829-1849. Includes "On board the Packet Ship George Washington Capt. Holdrege Liverpool to New York 1833: Some Recollections of England &c." 1833, manuscript Recollections of travel in England and Scotland in 1833 by Jabez Jenkins. Jenkins stopped for a relatively short time in England, on his way home to Philadelphia from Canton. Observations were largely of architecture and industry in London, Birmingham, Staffordshire, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. His postscript reflects on the differences between Americans and the British. Also of interest is a manuscript entitled "Tea and the Chinese" detailed notes on the differences between varieties of Chinese tea and its preservation. The section of "Miscellaneous Remarks" is entered between two passages on tea, and includes observations on the government, education, class structure, and personal appearance of the Chinese. Daniel Garrison Brinton (1837-1899) was a Philadelphia surgeon and anthropologist who created, collected, and donated collections of books and manuscripts related to anthropology, colonization of the Americas, and native American linguistics. This collection on Spain and New Spain documents, to a limited degree, Spain's relationships with its colonies and other European powers while struggling to maintain its empire.

Cope and Mendenhall letterbooks, 1788-1853 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection consists of four volumes of business letter books authored by Thomas P. Cope (1768-1843) and his uncle and business partner Thomas Mendenhall (1759-1843). Thomas P. Cope trained under his uncle who was in the mercantile shipping business at the turn of the nineteenth century. Thomas P. Cope took over his uncle's business in 1821 and the succeeding three volumes of business letters are all authored by him. Cope established Philadelphia's first packet line, a small fleet of first-rate ships that offered regular freight and passenger service between Philadelphia and Liverpool. Cope was very involved in local politics; in 1837 he was a member of the Convention to amend the Constitution of Pennsylvania, he was the President of the Board of Trade and of the Mercantile Library, as well as a member of the first board of Haverford College. Jacob Miller Haldeman business letters, 1813-1853 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Jacob Miller Haldeman (1781-1857) was a successful iron monger and businessman. He was one of the incorporators of the Chestnut Hill Iron Ore Company, of Columbia, in 1851, and was also one of the incorporators and managers of the Susquehanna Tide Water Canal Company. Additionally, he was one of the founders and a director of the Dauphin Deposit Bank in Harrisburg and was a large stockholder in the Harrisburg Bank, of which he was president starting in 1853, until the time of his death. The bulk of this collection consists of business letters to Jacob Miller Haldeman, most of which are from businessmen in Baltimore, Maryland. The letters address businesses that Haldeman was involved in, including iron, flour, canals, and property.

The Free Produce Assocation of Friends of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting was a Quaker organization, founded in 1845 in Philadelphia, PA. The free produce association was a boycott movement against "produce," anything produced by slave labor. This collection contains the minutes from 1845 - 1852, from the Free Produce Association of the Friends of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. The minutes contain finance reports, nominations for officiers, and reports from various committees, including reports from a committee delegated to be in correspondence with Quakers in England doing similar work.

Andrews Circulating Library and Booksellers was a bookstore, publisher, and subscription library in London in the early to mid-19th century. Consists of an archive of 113 original notes and letters largely composed by British aristocrats or their personal secretaries and addressed to Messrs. Andrews, Booksellers, at 167 New Bond Street, requesting or returning books from the circulating library. The collection contains single letters addressed to Mr. Lodge, Mr. Rooke, and Messrs. Harding. The correspondence also includes requests for stationery, music, and the purchase of new books.

Robert Morris, John Nicholson, and others organized the Asylum Company in April 1794 to develop and sell land in several unsettled areas of Pennsylvania. The land speculation venture was ultimately a failure and dissolved partially circa 1820 and fully in the 1830s. The Asylum Company papers include administrative and financial records as well as correspondence, title papers, shares of the company’s stock, and published material from 1773-1851.
