Melanie Atherton Updegraff Collection, 1910s-1980s (bulk) 1685-2020 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Melanie Atherton Updegraff (1886-1973) was a 1908 graduate of Bryn Mawr who went on to do missionary work for the Presbyterian Mission Board alongside her husband, Reverend David Benjamin Updegraff. The two were primarily stationed in Kolhapur and later Nipani, in West India. The collection includes correspondence between Updegraff and her sisters, children, and sister-in-law, among other family members, photographs of the Atherton and Updegraff families, an autograph collection, and brochures, pamphlets, and official documentation pertaining to Updegraff's missionary work. Updegraff's four sisters and three daughters all went to Bryn Mawr, and we hear about entrance exams, musical productions, and other campus activities in their letters.

Phyllis Dubsky Feldkamp papers, 1930-2017 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Phyllis Dubsky Feldkamp attended Bryn Mawr College as part of the class of 1937, and was a journalist living in France in the 1950s and 1960s where she began writing about fashion. She served as the Fashion and Style Editor for the Philadelphia Bulletin from 1968 to 1982, and also did much free-lance writing. The collection includes interviews and correspondence with figures in the fashion industry, and copies of nearly all of her writings. Additionally, it contains over 300 photographs, ranging from high quality prints to candids and photographs of herself, and stories and vignettes about growing up written by her daughter, Phoebe Feldkamp.

Margaret Hall Whitfield Papers, 1943-2013 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Margaret Rumsey Hall Whitfield (bornJune 23, 1933) was a 1955 graduate of Bryn Mawr College, did graduate work at Radcliffe and Harvard in Education in the late 1950s, and spent much of her life in either Concord or Great Barrington, Massachusetts, where she raised a family, raised and rode horses, managed businesses and property, and wrote. She was the daughter of Elizabeth Blodgett Hall, founder of Simon's Rock College, and Livingston Hall, who taught law at Harvard. The papers consist of her extensive notebooks of journal entries, correspondence, photographs, and writings documenting her life from high school at the Cambridge School in Weston, MA in 1947 to her move to California in the 2000s. The records date from 1970 to 2007 and include newspaper clippings, articles, meeting notes, office files, activism realia, and lobbying records, among other things.

Evelyn Jones Rich Papers, 1950-2010

Abstract:
Evelyn Jones Rich (BMC 1954) was the first Black residential student of Bryn Mawr College. While at Bryn Mawr, she was active in Students for Democratic Action the Bryn Mawr League, and the Self-Government Association. In 1954, she graduated with a BA in Political Science, and continued her education at Hunter College (CUNY) where she earned the MA in Social Studies. Rich later attended Columbia University where she earned the PhD in African History and Education. She has worked as a teacher, school administrator, and educational consultant throughout her life. This collection includes correspondence, articles, budgets, etc. from Evelyn Rich's various causes and organizations, including Lincoln House Outreach, the African American Institute, the New York City Public School District, and the Hunter College (CUNY) Campus Schools.

The Deanery was the home of the first Dean and second President of Bryn Mawr College, M. Carey Thomas, from 1885 to 1933. From 1933 until 1968, when the building was demolished for the construction of Canaday Library, the building served as the college's Alumnae Center and Inn. The collection is comprised primarily of Deanery records, mostly inventories of the building, and the files of Carol Campbell, Curator of Art and Artifacts in Bryn Mawr College's Special Collections

Abstract:
This collection contains papers related to Jane Martin's personal, professional, and academic life (c. 1968-2008). Martin held a PhD in African History, and focused most of her life and career around Liberia. Her life as an academic and professional who lived and worked in both Africa and the US often intersected with her personal correspondence and records, and the archive reflects those overlaps. Martin's research into specific tribes, people, and movements in Africa would be useful as primary and secondary records of history on the continent. Her records of syllabi and teaching philosophies chart out American influence on higher education in Liberia and Nigeria where she worked. Documents here also show her work with several institutions where she supported educational programs. Elmali Archaeological Collection, 1963-2009 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Elmali Archaeological Collection includes documents from a number of excavations conducted in the Elmali Plain of Lycia (Turkey): Karataş, Bağbaşi, Boztepe, Kizilbel, and Karaburun. The excavations were sponsored by Bryn Mawr College and directed by Machteld J. Mellink; the sites were excavated from 1963 to 1975. The excavations at Karataş, Bağbaşi, and Boztepe uncovered evidence of occupation at the sites from the Chalcolithic period through the Early Bronze Age, giving us a picture of domestic life during this time. At the sites of Kizilbel and Karaburun the team uncovered and conserved two painted chamber tombs in different artistic styles that are cited for their historical importance.

Fritz and Karoline Solmitz papers, 1929-2006 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Fritz Solmitz (1893-1933) was an early and outspoken leader in the opposition to Nazism, an editor of a Social Democratic newspaper in Lübeck and a member of the City council. Because of his active opposition to the Nazis, and probably because he was a Jew, he died of mistreatment in a German prison shortly after Hitler came to power. Karoline Somitz (1893-1966) was, like her husband, active in civic affairs. Much of the collection contains letters and photographs, some translated from German.

Abstract:
Machteld Johanna Mellink, celebrated archaeologist and professor of archaeology at Bryn Mawr College from 1949 to 1988, was born in Amsterdam, Holland in 1917. She received her BA in 1938 and MA in 1941 from the University of Amsterdam, and her PhD from the University of Utrecht in 1943. The Machteld Mellink papers cover Professor Mellink's academic and archaeological career from the late 1950s to the early 2000s. Included in the collection are her writings and notes, photographs, publications, and a few excavation tools. Researchers interested in her academic career, as well as her work related to excavation sites such as Kızılbel, Tarsus, and Sardis, will find valuable information in this collection. However, this collection does not provide particularly strong insight into archaeological history, nor Professor Mellink's thought process when approaching archaeological issues. Lucy T. Shoe Meritt papers, 1888-2003 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Lucy T. Shoe Meritt (1906- 2003) was an acclaimed archaeologist, scholar, teacher and editor who received her B.A, M.A, and Ph.D degrees from Bryn Mawr. During her life time, Shoe Meritt taught at Mount Holyoke College and the University of Texas at Austin, was a fellow at the American Academy of Rome, and served as the Editor of Publications for the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. Additionally, she was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study and the American Institute of Archaeology. She received the Gold Medal of the Archaeological Institute of America for Distinguished Archaeological Achievement in 1976. The collection is largely comprised of Shoe Meritt's correspondence with her family and notable scholars who were her contemporaries. It also includes diaries, publications, academic and professional papers, as well as photographs, postcards and scrapbooks.

Phyllis Pray Bober (b. 1920) received her B.A. from Wellesley College in 1941. In 1973 she accepted the position of Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Bryn Mawr College which she held until 1980. Bober's life long interest in culinary history led to courses, "historical banquets", and a book: Art, Culture, and Cuisine: Ancient and Medieval Gastronony. The collection consist of miscellaneous materials on Bober's career, miscellaneous research notes, typescripts, materials course notes, lecture scripts, correspondence (organized by subject matter), miscellaneous correspondence filed chronologically, tapes and disks for her talks, and materials from her own graduate and undergraduate education.

The Photo Archives comprises photographs, slides, transparencies, and negatives depicting the history of Bryn Mawr College from 1885 to the early 2000s. The majority of prints are in black-and-white, though there are a few in color from the late 1960s through the 1980s. Older prints range from carte-de-visite, cabinet cards, cyanotypes and some other early photomechanical processes. Photos are organized in three sub-collections: People; Buildings and Campus; and Events and Groups. The sub-collection People contains photos of notable and miscellaneous persons from the College. The Buildings group includes images of past and current campus buildings, including exterior and interior views. The Events and Groups sub-collection comprises events, campus happenings, and student life. Anne Truitt Papers, 1945-1997 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Anne Dean Truitt (1921-2004,) BMC 1943, was an artist and writer. Truitt's formal training as an artist began in 1948 when she studied sculpture at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Washington D. C. In the early 1960s Truitt began to develop what would become her signature style, applying layer upon layer of paint to hollow wooden structures. In the aftermath of two retrospective shows in the mid-1970s, Truitt began keeping detailed journals documenting the details of her life, her creative processes, her working methods, and her personal development. She converted the writing from one year into a book, Daybook, published in 1982. In 1986 more of her journal-writing was published as the book Turn. The 1991 retrospective led to her third book, Prospect, in 1996. The papers consist of manuscripts and drafts of Truitt's books and other writing, exhibition catalogs, correspondence, and records of travel.

The Ben Wolf collection contains materials collected by, researched, or produced by Ben Wolf throughout his life as a writer and artist. The collection includes Wolf's poetry, fiction, lectures, critical writing, and original artwork, as well as Sherlockiana material. Beyond work produced by Wolf, the collection also contains a wide variety of correspondence, as well as a large amount of collected brochures, newspaper clippings, and magazines. Constance Maravell was a Bryn Mawr graduate of the class of 1965. In the years follower her time at graduate school at the University of Chicago, Maravell delved into the world of art. She adopted the name Zinnia to represent her artistic identiy, and has exhibited her work of high art photography in the Washington D.C. area numerous times. Zinnia's work has been recognized and praised in a number of newspapers and newsletters. This collection contains the clippings from the articles that acknowledged her work, as well as an assortment of pamphlets and booklets summarizing her pieces in exhibitions, and a few select photographs taken at one of Zinnia's exhibition openings.

Phyllis Walter Goodhart Gordan papers, 1913-1994 (inclusive)

Phyllis Walter Goodhart (1913-1994) was a graduate of Bryn Mawr College (BA 1935) and a Latin and Greek scholar. While at Bryn Mawr, she developed a life-long interest in the works of the Italian humanists, especially Poggio Bracciolini. Mrs. Gordan's extensive scholarly papers reflect her many years of careful study of Italian humanism. Over the years she had acquired a notable collection of published and unpublished research materials from which she generated her meticulous notes on literally hundreds of medieval and Renaissance scholars and events. A majority of the collection is bibliographic and biographic notes on Renaissance leaders, scholars, and ecclesiastics. Additionally the collection contains a catalog of humanist manuscripts in European libraries, notes on Ernst Walser's archive of research materials, and a concordance for the numeration of Poggio' letters to Nicolaus de Niccolis in the editions of Gordan, Tonelli, Wilmanns, and Rüegg (unpublished). The Olivia Stokes Hatch papers reveal the relief work of women during the early 20th century, as well as family relationships, largely illustrated through extensive family correspondence. Olivia Stokes Hatch (1908-1983) was born in New Haven, CT and attended Bryn Mawr College from 1925 to 1930. Prior to her marriage she was very active with the American Red Cross and American Conferences of Social Work. In 1939, Olivia Phelps Stokes married John Davis Hatch, Jr. an art collector, consultant, and museum director. They had four children: John Davis Hatch III, Daniel Lindley Hatch, James Stokes Hatch, and Sarah Stokes Hatch. Anna V.S. Mitchell, the sister of Caroline Mitchell Phelps Stokes, and the aunt of Olivia Stokes Hatch, spent most of her life engaged in relief work. Helen Herron Taft Manning (1891-1987) was the daughter of President of the United States William Howard Taft and his wife Helen Herron. Taft graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1915, was named dean in 1917, and rose to acting president in 1919. The Helen Taft Manning papers house the records of Helen Taft Manning. This collection, which dates from 1861 to 1992, with bulk dates of 1915 to 1974, consists of correspondence, writings, clippings, and personal objects from the Manning family.

Marianne Craig Moore papers, 1904-1991 (inclusive) 1905-1972 (bulk)

Abstract:
Marianne Craig Moore (1887-1972) was an award-winning modernist poet. She graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1909 with a B.A. in history, economics, and politics. The poet was published for the first time in 1915, and by 1920, her poetry was frequently featured in The Dial, a magazine that served as an outlet for modernist thought and art. From 1925-1929, Moore was editor of The Dial. During the 1930s and 1940s, she published her poetry in books and did freelance writing. The 1950s and 1960s brought Moore fame and recognition: her Collected Poems, published in 1951, won her the Bollingen Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, and the National Book Award. She was also the recipient of The National Medal for Literature, France's Croix de Chevalier, and sixteen honorary degrees. Kennedy, Harris Wofford dedicated much of his career and personal life to advocating for public service. The Harris Wofford papers contain over 400 linear feet of extensive notes, research files, writings, correspondence, political papers and audio/visual recordings documenting an impressive career of a citizen passionate about activism. Mary Katharine Woodworth papers, 1787-1989 (inclusive)

Mary Katharine Woodworth (1900 – 1988) graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1924 with a Greek and English major and a minor in archaeology. She received her Ph. D in English from Bryn Mawr in 1933. After her book on British poet and genealogist Samuel Egerton Brydges was published in 1935, she began teaching in the English department at Bryn Mawr, and introduced the college's first course on 20th-century writers. She received a Distinguished Teaching Award from Bryn Mawr in 1968 upon her retirement. Her bequest of her entire estate to Bryn Mawr in 1988, which included Chagall's The Violinist, made her the 4th largest contributor to the college at the time. Zelma Corning Brandt (1891-1990) was a social crusader active throughout the twentieth century. Her chief interests included the independence and development of colonial countries, American Indian affairs, nuclear disarmament, women's issues, and geriatric concerns. The collection consists of correspondence, travel notes, diaries and writings, and publications and reports, especially from 1960-1989. Brandt's longevity and attention to detail provide a complete view of various world and domestic issues and events through this period. Zelma Brandt attended Bryn Mawr College from 1909 to 1911.

Maurine Boie La Barre received her B.S. from the University of Minnesota in 1927, did graduate work in English there 1927-1928, and received her M.A. in Sociology there in 1932. She received her M.S.W. from Bryn Mawr in 1937 and did further work at the Pennsylvania School of Social Work. During the late 1930s and early 1940s, she was editor-inchief of The Family, journal of the Family Welfare Association of America in New York City, and in 1943 she wrote the New York Baby Book which was given to every new mother in the city.
