Joseph Sturge Mission School Opening and Friends' Freedmen's Relief Association Funds Request, december 1862 and september 1874 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection contains a leaflet regarding the opening of Joseph Sturge's First Day School at the Friends Locust St. Mission House in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on January 1st, 1865. The school was established as First Day school for poor African Americans and immigrants. The school later merged and formed the Benezet House Association to provide education and relief to African Americans. Lack of demanding and funding led to the school's demolishment in 1945. There is also a letter from the Board of the Friends' Freedmen's Relief Association requesting funding for the reopening of schools in North Carolina and Virginia, addressed to William W. Smedley in September, 1874. The association was founded in 1863 to provide aid and education to freed enslaved peoples. Thomas Hamm Collection of Letters, 1807-08-15-1879-07-20 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection consists of five letters, donated by Thomas Hamm, written by Quakers around the East Coast of the United States: a majority of who are from Pennsylvania. The first letter is addressed to Susannah B. Habers of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1807 and is from a child of Habers. The second letter, from James to Thomas Kimber in 1820, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, updates Kimbers about James's infant. In the third letter, Alfred Cope, owner of a prominent Philadelphia shipping company, writes to his daughters (addressed to Elizabeth W. Cope) in Chester County, Pennsylvania, about the conditions of his sick father, Thomas Pim Cope. In the fourth letter, addressed to Haverford College Class of 1861 John G. Thomas in 1860, Haverford College alum Frank Richardson requests news of Haverford College, his alma mater, especially after the release of the "Collegian," a publication from the Longian Society, a student group for academic advancement and exploration. This collection contains a 1948 copy of George Fox's 'Book of Miracles' as well as various corresponding items. This includes a letter from Douglas G. Lister to Henry J. Cadbury, multiple letters from Janet F. Rice of the Cambridge University Press Subsidiary Rights Department confirming that Cadbury will recieve two complimentary copies of the reprinted book once published in 1973, a letter directly from Octagon Books's Editor-In-Chief Henry G. Schlanger, and many more materials related to Henry J. Cadbury and/or George Fox. This collection also contains a revised list of Haverford Meeting attendees and members in 1898 by Mary Rhoads Garrett, and an 1881 copy of "How To Enter Into Rest."

The collection is composed of correspondence of the family of David Sands Shearman and his wife, Hepsa Hathaway Howland Shearman of New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Poughkeepsie, New York. The Shearman and Howlands were prominent New England Quaker merchant and whaling families, intertwined by business and marriage. Much of the correspondence is directed to Hepsa, largely from her children who pursued a range of careers. Early correspondence is with her husband Captain David Sands Shearman, her siblings, and his relations and contains business and family information from New Bedford, MA, and Poughkeepsie, NY.

Abstract:
Cornelia Hancock (1840-1927) was a Civil War nurse, Reconstruction-era teacher in South Carolina, and, later, Philadelphia social worker. The papers consist primarily of her letters written in the post-Civil War years, 1865-1879, when she was teaching the children of formerly enslaved people in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. The collection includes reference material used by the donor, Henrietta Stratton Jaquette, in preparation for her book South after Gettysburg which was based on Hancock's letters. The letters provide insight into the conditions and attitudes of formerly enslaved people and their former enslavers.

Abstract:
Louis N. Robinson, Swarthmore College Class of 1905, was a prominent Quaker economist and penologist. On June 17, 1908, he married Caroline Hadley (1885-1946) under the care of Swarthmore Monthly Meeting. She was the daughter of Walter Hadley and Alice Paxson Hadley and a graduate of Swarthmore College, Class of 1906. The collection contains Louis Robinson's letters 1901-1908, Caroline Hadley's letters 1895-1908, and transcripts with annotations by their granddaughter, Christine Erb. The letter vividly describe student life at Swarthmore College and during Louis's graduate study in Germany as well as family, Quaker, and social concerns. Also included are photographs of the Paxson branch of the family.
