Abstract:

This collection consists primarily of letter between Emma Cadbury Jr. and other members of the Cadbury family and friends. Letters cover the affairs of family and friends, such as marriages, purchases, and general correspondances. Additionally, there are two pocket diaries and meeting programs.

Emma Cadbury Jr. was born in 1875 to Anna Kaighn Cadbury and Joel Cadbury. In 1898 she graduated from Bryn Mawr College, and spent the next twenty years involved in Quaker activities in the Philadelphia area. From 1924 to 1938 Emma Cadbury Jr. worked for the Quaker Center in Vienna, Austria. From 1943 to 1963, she was the chairman of Wider Quaker Fellowship of the American Section of the Friends' World Committee. In 1963, she was given an honorary degree by Wilmington College in Ohio. Emma Cadbury Jr. died in 1965. Emma Cadbury maintained close relationships with her siblings and their spouses throughout her life. Her sister Elizabeth Bartram Cadbury (b. 1871) married Rufus M. Jones in 1902. Her brother Benjamin Cadbury (b. 1873) married Anna Mary Moore in 1909. Her brother William Warder Cadbury (b. 1877) married Sara Manatt in 1911, and Catharine Balderston Jones in 1917. Her brother John Warder Cadbury(b. 1880) married Rachel Reeve in 1910. Her brother Henry Joel Cadbury (b. 1883) married Lydia Caroline Brown in 1916. (Information from the Dictionary of Quaker Biography and The Cadbury Pedigree).

Series I consists of the letters written to each other by Anna K. Cadbury and Emma Cadbury Jr. from 1900 to 1921. These letters contain news of family and friends, as well as descriptions of the women's lives. Series II consists of letters written to Emma Cadbury Jr. by family and friends. These letters discuss Quaker and religious subjects, family life, and news of friends. Significant correspondents include Rebekah Chickering, and Ada Gibbins. There are several letters to Emma Cadbury Jr. from Rufus M. Jones, as well as one to Emma Cadbury from M. Carey Thomas. Series III consists of letters to Anna K. Cadbury from family and friends. These letters are also about Quaker and family subjects. Several letters concern Anna K. and Joel Cadbury's Golden Wedding. Series IV is broken up into letters concerning specific subjects. Subseries I contains the letters sent by Anna K., Joel, Elizabeth, Benjamin, and Henry Cadbury to Emma, William Warder, and John Warder Cadbury while the latter were in Europe in 1901. These letters keep "the travelers" updated on news of family and friends at home. Subseries II consists of letters concerning the marriage of William Warder Cadbury and Sara Manatt. Subseries III consists of letters about Anna K. Cadbury's purchase of a quilt. Series V consists of letters sent to other Cadbury family members, such as Joel Cadbury, Elizabeth Cadbury, Benjamin Cadbury, William Warder Cadbury, and Henry Cadbury. Series VI consists of two pocket diaries, at least one of which belonged to Henry Cadbury, and a few programs from Yearly Meeting events.
