Abstract:
This collection documents the career of Carol Joyce (born 1946), a bookbinder, conservator, designer, and artist, specializing in book and paper restoration, limited edition books, conservation enclosures, and the rebinding of damaged books. She owned and operated Academy Books and Bindery, in Stockton, New Jersey, from 1983 to 2008. The collection contains many examples of limited-edition books that she produced or collected, as well as visual and written documentation for some of her projects.

Abstract:
The Gotham Book Mart (1920-2006) was one of New York City's most iconic bookstores during the 20th century. Founded by Frances Steloff (1887-1989), the daughter of poor Russian-Jewish immigrants, the Book Mart became a social center for the New York literati and a focal point for literary modernism in the United States. Steloff's successor, independent literary manuscript dealer Andreas Brown (1933-), maintained the store's focus on avant garde and small press publications while incorporating his own interests in postcards and genealogy. This collection contains 91 boxes of material relating to the daily operation of the Book Mart; correspondence, biographical, and legal material from both Brown and Steloff; postcard and genealogical material collected by Brown; photographs of the store, its employees, and events which took place there; and manuscripts and ephemera offered for sale.

Abstract:
The Sophia Wittenberg Mumford papers contain, correspondence, writings, diaries, photographs, memorabilia, audio-visual material, financial and legal material documenting the private and public life of Sophia and her husband, author Lewis Mumford. A large majority of this collection is remnants of Lewis Mumford's papers that remained in their house upon his death in 1990 and were finally transferred to the University of Pennsylvania after her death in 1997.

Abstract:
Mark Jan Dresden (1911-1986) was a Dutch-American Iranist who studied Indology. He taught Persian and Old and Middle Iranian Languages at the University of Pennsylvania from 1949 until his retirement in 1977. Dresden's work on Khotanese, Persian and Iranian languages and texts is widely published. This collection, dating from 1930 to 1994 contains correspondence, ephemera, event files, lectures, financial documents, funding and grants files, project files, research and writing, and personal documents.

Lemuel R. Boulware was a leading figure in industrial relations in America during the 1940's and 1950's. As vice-president of General Electric Company with responsibility for public and employee relations, he developed an approach to labor relations that came to be called "Boulwarism." Thomas Sovereign Gates, Jr. papers, 1902-1987 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Thomas Sovereign Gates, Jr., was a lieutenant commander in the United States Navy during World War II, who went on to serve as the Secretary of the Navy (1957-1959), Secretary of Defense (1959-1961), and Ambassador to China (1976-1977). As a civilian he also pursued a career in investment banking at the Morgan Guaranty Trust Company (later J.P. Morgan & Co.). Gates' personal papers focus largely on his government service, with a small amount of additional personal items. Included are many military and government documents and correspondence with influential politicians--perhaps most notably with President Dwight D. Eisenhower, under who Gates served as both Secretary of the Navy and Secretary of Defense. The collection also includes many clippings and photographs that have been assembled into a remarkable collection of scrapbooks that bring Gates' service to life.

Abstract:
Katharine "Kay" E. Reichert was an Air Force nurse who served with the Far East Air Force in Japan during the Korean War. After her return to the United States, Reichert earned her B.S. in Nursing Education from the University of Pennsylvania and then her M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. The bulk of this collection is comprised of photo albums and scrapbooks documenting daily life and excursions to destinations around Japan. Also included are official and personal papers and ephemera, yearbooks from Reichert's studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and artifacts such as medical bag and equipment, military insignias and honors, and door signs.

Abstract:
Margaret Naumburg (1890–1983) was an American psychologist, educator, artist, and author. She was one of the first proponents of art therapy and utilitzed art as a method for both diagnosis and therapy. The collection contains materials documenting all the phases of Naumburg's long and productive work life. The materials include correspondence; copies of and materials for Naumburg's writings, lectures, and exhibit catalogs; materials for case studies; lecture notes for the courses she taught and papers her students wrote in those courses; and work by others that she collected and saved. Other media in the collection include slides, photographs, and audio recordings.

George W. Norris scrapbooks and photograph albums, 1875-1964 (inclusive)

Abstract:
George William Norris (1875-1965) was a professor of clinical medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and chief of Medical Service at the Pennsylvania Hospital. After a successful career and a period of overseas service with the Medical Corps during the first World War, Norris retired to a country house in northeast Pennsylvania. There, Norris was able to dedicate himself to his greatest interests: photography and family history. This collection contains four scrapbooks (1875-1964) compiled by Norris which feature many photographic portraits of Norris family members and landscapes of the Pennsylvania countryside. The scrapbooks also contain background information about Norris' family and one scrapbook is filled with some of George Norris' correspondence, certificates of membership to philanthropic and academic societies, and other papers. This collection also includes a short account of a 1963 Christmas trip to Guatemala.

LeRoy M. Ennis (1893-1978) was a dentist and a professor at the University of Pennsylvania focusing on the study of roentgenology (radiation) and oral surgery. In 1951, he was a member of the United States Dental Commission which visited Osaka Dental College in Japan, an effort to aid dentists in that country. This collection documents Japanese dentistry in the 1930s to 1951 through photographs and includes publications about the practice of dentistry and dental education in Japan, many of which were produced prior to the trip.

Japanese photograph album relating to the late Taisho/early Showa era, 1919-1941 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This album documents the life of a Japanese family from the middle of the Taisho era (circa 1919) to the early-to-middle Showa era (circa 1941), during which Japan emerged as a militaristic imperial power in Southeast Asia. Though there is little direct biographical information, it appears that the family was upper class, and the patriarch was a high-placed figure in the Ishakawa Civil Engineers. Many of the photographs appear to come from soldiers stationed abroad—judging by their winter gear and the time period, probably Manchuria. The photographs are a mix of portraits, informal small group shots, and large-scale organizational photographs documenting school classes, military units, civilian leagues and professional associations.

In 1937 Japan invaded the Republic of China, setting in motion the Second Sino-Japanese War, the largest Asian war in the 20th century and the beginning of the larger Pacific War (the Asian theater of World War II). This album contains photographs taken by a warrant officer in the Imperial Japanese Navy. Many of photographs depict the officer at various stages in his career. There are also shots of friends and family, with men in military uniform and women in formal attire. Dating and signage suggests the action shots pertain to the Battle of Shanghai in 1937.

All-India, Burma and Ceylon Eucharistic Congress photograph album, 1937-1938 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This photo album contains seventeen different images from the National Eucharistic Congress of India held in Chennai (then Madras) in 1937. Eucharistic Congresses, which drew large numbers of attendees and typically lasted for a few days, featured legates from the Vatican and centered around a mass adoration of the Eucharist. All of the images in the scrapbook are black and white, and most of the pages with images are also embellished with different pen-and-ink drawings or decorative sketches. It is unknown who composed the scrapbook in this collection, but it seems likely that he or she was involved in the planning of the Congress or had some authority over the event.

In 1937 Japan invaded the Republic of China, setting in motion the Second Sino-Japanese War, the largest Asian war in the 20th century and the beginning of the larger Pacific War (the Asian theater of World War II). This album contains photographs taken by a heavy machine gunner in the Japanese Imperial Army during the Second Sino-Japanese war. The photographs include posed group shots from army training, less formal group shots taken in the field, and is especially notable for its action shots from the battlefield, as well as candid photographs of military travel and camp life.

Abstract:
The Frothingham and Roberts families were joined when Mary Foster Frothingham (1863-1934) and George Wood Bissell Roberts (1859-1941) were married on February 10, 1886. This collection documents three generations of the Frothingham family of Massachusetts and the Roberts family of Philadelphia and Riverton, New Jersey. The bulk of the material consists of extended family correspondence dating from 1862 to 1936 to and or from George W.B. Roberts and his wife Mary Foster Frothingham Roberts.

Abstract:
This album contains photographs taken by an aviator of the Imperial Japanese Army during the Second Sino-Japanese War, during deployment in Manchuria and northeastern China. The photos are a mixture of posed, formal shots and candid photos of soldiers in military action and in camp within the steppes of Manchura, including local peoples with horses, yurts, and Bactrian camels. There are also shots of friends and family on the home front; the names of photographic studios suggest that the aviator came from somewhere near Ueno.

Abstract:
This collection consists of about 170 photographs, placed in an album, taken in India between 1930 and 1934 by an unidentified British soldier. Though the soldier is unknown, it is almost certain that he served in the Royal Fusiliers. The photographs in the album largely depict the every day life of British soldiers and their social activities, as well as providing evidence of British interest in Indian life and customs.

"Sudan" photograph album documenting the period of the Anglo-Egyptian occupation, circa 1925-1930 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This photograph album consists of thirty-one original black and white photographs documenting Sudanese culture and the changes the British brought to the country during the period of Anglo-Egyptian occupation. Included are views of Halfa, Kassala, Sennar, Khartoum (including government buildings, Gordon College, Kitchener Memorial Medical School, the Grand Hotel Khartoum, and Khartoum Palace), Omdurman, Suakin, and Port Sudan, all of which are situated along the Sudan government railways. There are also several images documenting the Gezira scheme, the Sennar irrigation dam, and indigenous peoples harvesting wheat and cotton.

Henry Vaux photograph albums of India, 1911-1929 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Major Henry George Vaux (1883-1957) was a military secretary in the British Army, posted in India. He served as Aide de Camp to Lord Carmichael who served as Governor of Victoria from 1908 to 1911, Governor of Madras from 1911 to 1912, and Governor of Bengal from 1912 to 1914. Major Vaux also served under Lord Ronaldshay, Lord Lytton and Lord Sykes. He was named Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire in 1921 by King George the V. Major Vaux ended his career as a Lieutenant Colonel. The five volumes of photographs capture the luxurious style and activities present in the lives of the highest ranking British military posted to India, and their families, in the early part of the 20th century. The subject of many photographs are the leisure activities enjoyed by this group – horse races, polo, hunting, tennis – as well as ceremonial events such as visits of kings, queens and dignitaries of all kind.
