Fritz and Karoline Solmitz papers, 1929-2006 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Fritz Solmitz (1893-1933) was an early and outspoken leader in the opposition to Nazism, an editor of a Social Democratic newspaper in Lübeck and a member of the City council. Because of his active opposition to the Nazis, and probably because he was a Jew, he died of mistreatment in a German prison shortly after Hitler came to power. Karoline Somitz (1893-1966) was, like her husband, active in civic affairs. Much of the collection contains letters and photographs, some translated from German.

Margaret Hall Whitfield Papers, 1943-2013 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Margaret Rumsey Hall Whitfield (bornJune 23, 1933) was a 1955 graduate of Bryn Mawr College, did graduate work at Radcliffe and Harvard in Education in the late 1950s, and spent much of her life in either Concord or Great Barrington, Massachusetts, where she raised a family, raised and rode horses, managed businesses and property, and wrote. She was the daughter of Elizabeth Blodgett Hall, founder of Simon's Rock College, and Livingston Hall, who taught law at Harvard. The papers consist of her extensive notebooks of journal entries, correspondence, photographs, and writings documenting her life from high school at the Cambridge School in Weston, MA in 1947 to her move to California in the 2000s. Bryn Mawr College Posters for International Expositions Collection, 1893-1926 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Bryn Mawr College showcased its mission and prestigious programs at international expositions with an array of displayed materials. The awards in the collection demonstrate the success of these exhibitions and recognition of the high level of education provided to the undergraduate and graduate students in attendance at the college. The earliest exhibited materials in the collection were shown in 1893 at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where the college won an Educational Exhibit Award. Bryn Mawr was a relatively young institution at the time of the exposition in Chicago, having been open for less than ten years. In 1900, Bryn Mawr College had a more established reputation within the international community. The collection includes materials from the Paris exposition, though there are fewer materials in comparison with the St. Louis exhibit only four years later. Margaret Hilles (Johnson) scrapbook, 1890-1910 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Margaret Hilles was born in 1870. She went to secondary school in Wilmington and later attended Bryn Mawr College, graduating in 1893. Her husband was a mining engineer, and she did a large amount of travelling until his death in 1919. Hilles was involved in a number of groups. She was active in Friends organizations and a founder of the Chester County Library Association. She was a member of the Downingtown Friend's Meeting and the Downingtown Auxiliary to Chester County Hospital. Hilles passed away in 1950. The Margaret Hilles Johnson scrapbook contains Johnson's one-volume scrapbook. The scrapbook contains material from roughly 1890-1910, but focuses on Hilles' four years at Bryn Mawr.

Lois Linn Killough Buss scrapbook, volume 1: 1943-1947 volume: 1947 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Lois Linn Killough attended Bryn Mawr College, graduating with the class of 1947 with a degree in Geology. Killough remained highly involved in alumnae activities post-graduation. She married Onno B. Buss and had two children. Killough volunteered the Interfaith Human Relations Council and the Women's Program Committee. She worked for the Cox Travel Bureau (travel consultant), the Olson Travel Organization (tour conductor), and the Humble Oil and Refining Co. (evaluation geologist). Killough died February 11, 1998. The Lois Linn Killough Buss scrapbooks Killough's two scrapbooks. The bulk of the material in Volume 1 is from Killough's Bryn Mawr career, from 1943-1947. Volume 2 contains material from 1947 only.

Genevieve Thompson (Smith) scrapbook, 1903-1907 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Genevieve Thompson Smith was born December 2, 1885 in Portland, Oregon. She was prepared for college by the Portland Academy in Portland and Mrs. Hartman's School in New York. She attended Bryn Mawr College from 1903-1905 and the University of Oregon Law School from 1911-1913. She moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked in the Russian section of U.S. Army intelligence during World War I. In 1921, she married Admiral Norman Murray Smith. Thompson died in Portland, Oregon on May 20, 1974. The Genevieve Thompson Smith scrapbook houses Thompson's one volume scrapbook. The scrapbook contains materials from 1903-1907. It consists of a large number of photographs and other memorabilia.

Abstract:
Eleanor Williams (later Apthorp) graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1907 with degrees in English and Philosophy. In 1916, she married Robert East Apthorp and they had three children. Williams was involved in the Girl Scout Council, the Unitarian Alliance, the Million Woman's Club, and the League of Women Voters. The collection contains Williams' one volume scrapbook. This scrapbook, which spans the years during which Williams was a student was at Bryn Mawr, from 1903-1907, consists mostly of personal memorabilia.

Ellen Sudders Young scrapbook, scrapbook: 1922-1930 photo album: 1924-1926 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Ellen Sudders Young was a member of the class of 1926. She graduated from Bryn Mawr with degrees in mathematics and physics. From 1926-43, she worked in the Sterility Testing Department of the Biological Laboratories of Sharp and Dohme. Following this, she served as a Department Head at Reichel Laboratory from 1944-46. Young also served as a missionary at the Scripture Memory Mountain Mission in Emmalena. Kentucky. Young's papers houses her scrapbook and photo album. The scrapbook contains materials from 1922-1930 and largely consists of newspaper articles. The photo album contains photos from circa 1924-1926.

The Photo Archives comprises photographs, slides, transparencies, and negatives depicting the history of Bryn Mawr College from 1885 to the early 2000s. The majority of prints are in black-and-white, though there are a few in color from the late 1960s through the 1980s. Older prints range from carte-de-visite, cabinet cards, cyanotypes and some other early photomechanical processes. Photos are organized in three sub-collections: People; Buildings and Campus; and Events and Groups. The sub-collection People contains photos of notable and miscellaneous persons from the College. The Buildings group includes images of past and current campus buildings, including exterior and interior views. The Events and Groups sub-collection comprises events, campus happenings, and student life. There are also portraits of early alumnae, yearbook photographs, Bi-Co news photographs, and images from the Summer School of Women Workers in Industry (SSWWI). The Deanery was the home of the first Dean and second President of Bryn Mawr College, M. Carey Thomas, from 1885 to 1933. From 1933 until 1968, when the building was demolished for the construction of Canaday Library, the building served as the college's Alumnae Center and Inn. The collection is comprised primarily of Deanery records, mostly inventories of the building, and the files of Carol Campbell, Curator of Art and Artifacts in Bryn Mawr College's Special Collections

Abstract:
Louise Congdon spent her freshman year at Northwestern University, and graduated from Bryn Mawr wtih mahors in both French and Latin. She later moved to La Jolla, California, and in 1926 founded what is now La Jolla County Day School. The Louise Congdon scrapbook houses the Congdon's college scrapbook. The scrapbook covers the years 1904-1908, and contains characteristic Bryn Mawr memorabilia: programs, invitations, BMC-related clippings, some SGA-related materials, etc.

Jessie Gilroy majored in French and Greek, graduating from Bryn Mawr in 1909. She was a painter, and exhibited in several galleries throughout the United States. In 1927, she married the esteemed sculptor Heinz Warneke. She died in 1982. The Jessie Gilroy scrapbook houses Gilroy's two-volume scrapbook. Volume 1 consists of material from 1906-1910, is primarily photographs, while Volume 2 consists of material from 1908-1910, and contains a great deal of personal memorabilia.

Sylvia Scudder (Bowditch) scrapbook, 1895-1906 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Sylvia Scudder (later Bowditch) was born in 1875. She was prepared by the Cambridge School for Girls in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She matriculated with the Bryn Mawr class of 1899, but received her degrees—in Greek and French—in 1901. From 1901-1902, she did graduate work in Greek at Radcliffe College. She taught Greek and English as the Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, Maryland from 1902-1904. She married Ingersoll Bowditch in 1904. For 21 years, she was the treasurer of the Bryn Mawr Club of Boston, as well as being the collector and editor for her class. She passed away in 1964. The Sylvia Scudder Bowditch scrapbook houses Scudder's one volume scrapbook. The scrapbook contains materials from 1895 to 1906 and primarily contains photographs and other Bryn Mawr memorabilia.

Elizabeth Welbourn (Seccombe) scrapbook, 1935-1938 (inclusive)

Elizabeth Welbourn was a member of the Bryn Mawr class of 1938. After graduation, she studied at the Peabody Harp Institute at Johns Hopkins University. Playing harp was an integral part of her life: in addition to teaching the instrument, she was the president of the Bay Area Harp Association, and she played in local symphonies and at church. In 1940, Welbourn married Reverend Alfred Seccombe and the couple had four children together. She was involved in the Episcopal Church and numerous volunteer activities. This collection contains Welbourn's one volume scrapbook. The scrapbook covers Welbourn's last three years at college, from 1935-1938 and is mostly concerned with social memorabilia.

Mildred Fairchild Woodbury was a noted labor economist and educator. Her collection contains materials from 1894-1975 and includes a variety of materials related to the Department of Social Work and Social Research at Bryn Mawr College, the American Association of University Women Philadelphia, the YWCA, the Pennsylvania Advisory Committee for Public Assistance, and the Southeast Regional Planning Council, the Pennsylvania Criminal Justice Planning Board, and some personal materials.

Friends Freedmen's Association Records, 1863-1982 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Friends' Freedmen's Association was an organization of Philadelphia Quakers founded in 1863 as Friends' Association of Philadelphia and Its Vicinity, for the Relief of Colored Freemen. Its purpose was to provide relief and education to formerly enslaved people during and after the Civil War. The name was changed circa 1873. From 1947-1955 the Association supported black students in schools and summer work camps. From 1955-1970 the income from investments was used to provide grants for scholarship to needy black students. From 1970 income and principal was distributed yearly primarily among Bryn Mawr, Earlham, Guilford, and Haverford Colleges. In January 1982 the Association was dissolved. The funds were distributed among the four colleges named above to be used as aid to black students as the J. Henry Scattergood Scholarship Fund. This collection consists of a large number of scrapbooks assembled by Bryn Mawr College Alumnae, focusing on their years at Bryn Mawr College. The alumnae represented graduated at various times between 1891 and 1950. The vast majority of the scrapbooks come from the earlier years of Bryn Mawr College. There is huge variety among items in this collection. Some scrapbooks contain a great deal of material while others are sparse. Some provide commentary on the items, ranging from simple labels to diary-length entries. Most contain personal memorabilia such as letters and cards, as well as Bryn Mawr College-related materials. These include programs, photographs, newspaper clippings, souvenirs from dances and dinners, and college traditions material. Poems, drawings, and notes from friends give a distinctive perspective into the daily life at Bryn Mawr College. Frances Arnold Family Letters, 1893-1902 (inclusive)

Frances Arnold was born in New York City in 1874, daughter of Francis and Augusta Arnold. After graduating the Brearly School, she attended Bryn Mawr College from 1893 to 1895, affiliating herself with the class of 1897. Upon leaving the College, she attended French finishing school and traveled abroad. In 1899 she returned to New York to teach mathematics at Brearly. Except for a brief stint supervising women building torpedos during World War I, Arnold remained at Brearly until 1930. She then retired to New Hampshire, where she was involved with community affairs. The Frances Arnold family letters comprise a collection of the personal correspondence of Frances Arnold, Bryn Mawr College class of 1897. The letters in the collection range from 1895 to 1902. The bulk of the collection is personal correspondence between Arnold and her family and Arnold's personal memorabilia.

Mildred Pressinger (Kienbusch) scrapbook, 1905-1909 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Mildred Pressinger (later Kienbusch) graduated from Bryn Mawr College with an A.B. in Philosophy and Psychology. She was a member of the Mayflower Descendants, the National Society of Colonial Dames, Founder and Patriots, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also active in a number of charities in New York City. She married Carl Otto von Kienbusch, the owner of an internationally celebrated collection of medieval arms and armor. Mildred Kienbusch died in 1968. The Mildred Pressinger scrapbook houses a very large one-volume scrapbook containing a great deal of material from Pressinger's four years at Bryn Mawr College (1905-1909). The scrapbook contains a large amount of Bryn Mawr memorabilia.
