Abstract:: The papers of Alan Kaufman--an American Jewish author, editor, performer, artist, and impresario--include drafts of his memoir Jew Boy, his novel Matches, editorial material related to volumes in his Outlaw Bible series, and the magazine Davka: Jewish Cultural Revolution. There are numerous notebooks with notes, observations, lists, and drafts of poetry and writing, as well as original artwork. The collection also includes publishing and personal correspondence, and material documenting Kaufman's involvement in the San Francisco Spoken Word poetry movement and other creative activities.

Night Waltz: the Music of Paul Bowles collection, 1997-2000 (inclusive)

Extent:: 16.3 linear foot
Abstract:: The collection of the documentary film Night Waltz: the Music of Paul Bowles spans the dates 1997-2000, and contains 16.3 linear feet of film footage, video and audio tapes, compact discs, computer diskettes, photographs, production notes, promotional materials, and correspondence related to the research, production, and promotion of Night Waltz. The archive contains materials from all stages of production, ranging from the original 16 mm color film negatives to the commercially released VHS video tape. Originally titled Odd Man Out, most of the materials in the collection refers to the film by the earlier title. The title Night Waltz appears to have been chosen in the late stages of production. The correspondence contained in the collection, which is spread throughout the various series, reveals the filmmakers’ conception of the film and its evolution, providing a running narrative of the difficulties and challenges of independent filmmaking. Abstract:: John Furnival (1933-2020) was a British visual artist whose work is associated with the Concrete Poetry, Mail Art, and Fluxus movements, as well as with the American Beats. In 1964, Furnival, along with Dom Sylvester Houédard, founded Openings Press, a small Gloucestershire press dedicated to publishing concrete poetry and similar work. The John Furnival papers encompass nearly fifty years of the artist's personal and professional activity and document his involvement with the International Concrete Poetry and Mail Art movements through correspondence, publications, broadsides, and posters.

Abstract:: The L. Eudora Pettigrew papers document the academic and professional career of Dr. L. Eudora Pettigrew (b. 1928), the first African American to hold a position in central administration at the University of Delaware and the first black female president of the SUNY system. The collection chronicles over sixty years of her life as a student, educator, administrator, and global emissary. Spanning the dates 1900 to 2012, the collection also offers insight into the lives of three generations of Pettigrew's family, for whom education and scholarship were clearly valued.

Abstract:: GDA Companies, Inc., was a corporate communications and design business formed by Richard and Karin Florschutz and based in Wilmington, Delaware. It grew out of Graphic Design Associates, Inc., which was founded by the couple in 1979. GDA Companies records comprises administrative and organizational files as well as numerous design samples created by the organization for largely Delaware-based businesses, including multiple, large pharmaceutical enterprises, between 1979 and 2000. The collection also includes pre-GDA Richard Florschutz design work, art, and ephemera, dating circa 1969-1979.

Abstract:: W. H. Auden (1907-1973) was an English and American poet, translator, librettist, playwright, and essayist. The Robert A. Wilson W. H. Auden collection comprises Wilson's collected materials created by and related to W. H. Auden. The collection includes manuscript and typescript drafts, proofs, and published versions of Auden's poetry, translations, prose, and dramatic works; programs and promotional ephemera for Auden's readings and events as well as other performances related to the writer; audiovisual recordings of Auden's works; Wilson's and Auden's correspondence with each other and others; Auden's personal ephemera and realia; photographs by and of Auden; critical writings about Auden and catalogs of Audenia; and Chester Kallman's personal papers.

Ursula Sternberg-Hertz papers, 1923-2014 (inclusive) 1950-2000 (bulk)

Abstract:: Ursula Sternberg-Hertz (1925-2000) was a Philadelphia based artist who lived in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, England, and Canada before immigrating to the United States in 1971 with her husband, conductor Jonathan Sternberg. The collection documents her artistic career, with artwork ranging from rough sketches to finished pieces, using acrylics, charcoal, markers, pen-and-ink, stamps, watercolor, and other experimental mediums. She produced artwork on paper, metal, fabric, and leather; in sketchbooks; and on objects such as lampshades and boxes. In addition to her artwork, there is also family and personal material; correspondence; diaries, including an extraordinary run of her "visual diaries" from the early 1940s and from the 1970s until her death; and material related to her exhibits.

Walter D. Palmer collection of materials on the Black Bottom Project and other displaced Philadelphia communities, 1875-2017 (inclusive) 1962 – 2010 (bulk)

Extent:: 3.2 cubic feet (3 record center boxes) and 7.89 gigabytes
Abstract:: The Black Bottom Project worked to document the history of the Black Bottom neighborhood of Philadelphia, with particular emphasis on the displacement of thousands of community residents following redevelopment plans endorsed by the City of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania. Over time the project expanded to look at other Philadelphia neighborhoods that experienced similar community displacement and gentrification. The catalyst for the project was the course "Neighborhood Displacement and Community Power," (Urban Studies 448) taught by Walter D. Palmer (born 1934) and the research conducted by its students over many semesters from 1995 to 2010. The collection includes original student research, public records and other documentary sources, resident interviews, a short film, and digital files and paper printouts from the creation of a website.
