Abstract:

George W. Taylor (1901-1972) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics in 1921 and a Ph.D. in 1929.Taylor taught at Wharton for over 30 years in the field of industrial relations, including arbitration, mediation, and alternative dispute resolution. Taylor mediated an end to the Apex Hosiery Strike in Philadelphia in 1932 and orchestrated the passage in 1967, of the Public Employees Fair Employment Law, which is commonly known as "the Taylor Law." The collection, 1921-1970, consists of correspondence, trade negotiations, laws, agreements and studies surrounding the hosiery labor industry in the early to mid 20th century. The collection also contains files pertaining to memo series, decision series, and umpire decisions pertaining to the hosiery industry.

American Law Institute Code of Criminal Procedure Records, 1926-1930 (inclusive)

Abstract:

In March 1925, the American Law Institute (ALI) started the Code of Criminal Procedure project. The resulting volume attempted to provide a framework for effective administration of criminal law while maintaining protection for the rights of the accused. The project was led by two Reporters, William E. Mikell and Edwin R. Keedy, who were also colleagues at Penn Law with the help of twelve Advisers. This collection consists of materials that document a small section of the project. The collection includes correspondence, suggestions and criticisms, notes, and other materials related to the drafting of the code, which outlined procedures for carrying out criminal law and defined the rights of the accused in areas such as arrest, bail, and execution.

Abstract:

This collection features a series of materials partially documenting the career of lawyer and legal scholar William E. Mikell. Most notably featured in this collection are various drafts of the criminal codes Mikell was heavily involved in planning and drafting during his career. Also included are notes and writings of Mikell's which touch upon the large number of criminal law and code topics he worked with throughout his life. Speeches given by and about Mikell are included in their original forms, as well as person memorabilia including Mikell's 1890 Master's degree from The Citadel. The collection is rounded out with a brief set of personal photographs.

Abstract:

James Wilson was born on September 14, 1742 in Carskerdo, Fife, Scotland. He began studying law at the law office of John Dickinson and by 1766, he attained the bar in Philadelphia. He opened his own practice soon after in Reading. Wilson played a part in the establishment of the United States Constitution. Throughout his career, he regularly advocated the idea that sovereignty resided in the people, and that the President and members of both houses of Congress should be popularly elected. This collection contains a select number of original documents that highlight the political and professional activities of James Wilson.

Abstract:

The Judge Norma L. Shapiro papers, 1957-2016, consist of material from Shapiro's time as a federal judge and her active involvement in legal organizations. Norma Levy Shapiro attended the University of Pennsylvania Law School (now known as the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School) from 1949 to 1951. In August 1978, President Jimmy Carter nominated Shapiro to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, making her the first woman judge to serve in this district. Shapiro gained national recognition for several cases that she presided over, including Harris v. City of Philadelphia. The collection contains correspondence, case notes, speeches, and meeting minutes that document Shapiro's work on Harris v. City of Philadelphia, her service to the Eastern District Court, and her involvement in professional legal organizations.

Abstract:

The Judge Arlin Adams papers, 1945-2012, consist of correspondence, awards, and articles that document Judge Adams' research interests and community involvement. Arlin Adams graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School (now known as the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School) in 1946. In 1969, President Nixon nominated Judge Adams to the Third Circuit Court. Judge Adams spent seventeen years on the bench before retiring in 1988 and returning to private practice at Schander Harrison Segal and Lewis. This collection primarily contains material from Judge Adams work with professional, charitable, and educational organizations after he retired from the federal bench. Other material includes research files from his time lecturing at Penn Law and source material for speeches that he wrote.

Abstract:

Michael Hertzberg graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School in 1963. In 1966, he left his job in New York to work with the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. He handled civil rights cases in Jackson, Mississippi from April to August 1966. His papers contain a personal narrative about his experiences during those four months as well as affidavits and memos from this work.
