Michael Hertzberg was born on June 8, 1939, and grew up in Brooklyn. He attended Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania Law School (now known as the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School). After graduating in 1963, he taught for a year at the University of California Berkeley School of Law before beginning work at Proskauer Rose in New York.

In 1966, he received a letter from the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law (LCCRUL) about a pro bono opportunity. The LCCRUL was established in 1963 by President John F. Hertzberg left his job in New York to work with the LCCRUL on their Mississippi Project. He handled civil rights cases in Jackson, Mississippi from April to August 1966.

Michael Hertzberg passed away in August 2023.
