Abstract:
Helen Griffith was a member of Bryn Mawr's class of 1905. After graduation, she taught English at Mount Holyoke, Bennett, and Tougaloo Colleges. In 1966, she published a biography of Sarah Dickey titled "Dauntless in Mississippi: The Life of Sarah A. Dickey." Griffith died in 1976. The Helen Griffith papers houses Griffith's college diary and scrapbook. The diary spans 1903-1910, but the bulk of the entries describe either her junior and senior years at Bryn Mawr (1903-1905) or her first year at Columbia University (1909). The diary offers a near-daily record of Bryn Mawr student life during the early twentieth century. The scrapbook depicts a broad overview of life on campus in the early twentieth century. Griffith collects a range of materials relating to administration, academics, and extracurricular activities. The scrapbook focuses on Griffith's college years (1901-1905) but also includes material through 1956, mostly documenting alumnae engagement and reunion events.

Mildred Fairchild Woodbury was a noted labor economist and educator. Her collection contains materials from 1894-1975 and includes a variety of materials related to the Department of Social Work and Social Research at Bryn Mawr College, the American Association of University Women Philadelphia, the YWCA, the Pennsylvania Advisory Committee for Public Assistance, and the Southeast Regional Planning Council, the Pennsylvania Criminal Justice Planning Board, and some personal materials.

The collection contains correspondence, memoirs, genealogical charts, newsletters, pamphlets, family reunion material, scrapbooks, legal documents, publications, and newspaper clippings related to the descendants of Francis Martin Drexel. Includes a diary written by Francis Martin Drexel in 1826-1830 and three letters authored by Anthony J. Drexel, the founder of Drexel University. The bulk of material dates from the twentieth century and is contained in eleven volumes of scrapbooks that begin with the death of Anthony J. Drexel in 1893.

Abstract:
The Philadelphia Chapter of the Special Libraries Association was founded in 1919 as a local library organization, the Special Libraries Council of Philadelphia and Vicinity, to promote the collection, organization, and dissemination of information to executives, research directors, and employees of industrial firms. In 1933 the Council affiliated with the Special Libraries Association, an international professional association for librarians and information professionals working in non-traditional library settings. The collection consists of publications issued by the chapter as well as bylaws, minutes, reports, and other administrative records dating from its founding.

Hollis Godfrey papers, 1920-1936 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Hollis Godfrey (1874-1936) served as president of the Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry from 1913 to 1921. He was educated as an engineer at Tufts, Harvard, and MIT, and he later taught at MIT and served as an administrator at the School of Practical Arts in Boston. The collection contains correspondence, including a series of letters between Godfrey and the poet Vachel Lindsay; Dr. Godfrey's publications, manuscripts, and speeches; administrative records from the Engineering Economics Foundation, which Godfrey led in the 1920s; and publications collected by Dr. Godfrey, including some pamphlets and periodicals dealing with economics, national security, and the Jewish "threat."

Abstract:
Hollis Godfrey (1987-1936) served as president of the Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry from 1913 to 1921. He was educated as an engineer at Tufts, Harvard, and MIT, where he also taught. While living in Boston he was an administrator at the School of Practical Arts in Boston. He came to Drexel in 1913 and was the President until 1921. This collection contains correspondence, speeches, and research done on Godfrey in 1959. There is also a functionalization chart on the administration of Drexel, circa 1917.

Abstract:
The College of Engineering is among the oldest colleges at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Since its establishment in 1914, it has achieved many firsts. In 1915, it became the first school at Drexel permitted to grant a four-year degree; in 1919, it was the first to implement a cooperative education program, placing students in business, industrial and professional assignments as a component of their education; and, later, in 1925, it was the first to extend the cooperative course from four years to five. Since its institution, the College of Engineering has developed and expanded its curriculum to include undergraduate and graduate programs, and research projects. This collection houses the administrative records of the College of Engineering from 1930 to 1990, with a bulk of the materials created between 1956 and 1973. Abstract:
The Library records contains documentation of the Drexel University Library from its creation in 1891 to 2003. Drexel University Library has been housed in three different buildings; the Main Building (1891-1958), the Korman Center (1959-1982) and W.W. Hagerty Library (1983-2010). The library was also responsible for running the library school until 1962, with the exception of the years 1914 to 1922 when the library school was suspended. The documents in this collection constitute a record of the activities of the directors, the internal library departments, and the intensive planning of the form and function of the two library buildings.

This collection contains information on the activities of the Drexel Museum and Picture Gallery as well as past and present collections. The records, which include photographs and facsimiles of museum objects, date from 1797 until 1984; the bulk are from 1937 until 1941, Dorothy Grafly’s tenure as curator. The collection has been arranged into three series: I. Curator correspondence and notes, II. Catalogues, inventories and reproductions, and III. Collection reports and publications. The first series provides an in-depth look of the responsibilities and activities of the curator. The catalogues, inventories, and reproductions series is predominantly focused on the objects that the Museum has formerly and presently houses.

Abstract:
Marion Turner Stubbs Thomas, born in 1910, was a founding member of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, which was founded in Philadelphia in 1938. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1930, and received a music degree from Zeckwer Hahn Conservatory of Music. Dr. John Patrick Turner was born November 1, 1885. He became a prominent and influential member of Philadelphia society, elected in 1935 as the first African American on the Philadelphia Board of Education, as well as achieving status as a respected physician and police surgeon. Dr. Frederick Douglass Stubbs was recognized as an extremely gifted chest surgeon and medical doctor. Dr. Stubbs was born in 1906 in Wilmington, Delaware, and attended Dartmouth University before graduating from Harvard University medical school. The Honorable Abraham L. Freedman, a long-time attorney and later judge, was an influential civic leader in Philadelphia’s movements towards political and civic reform in the 1940s and 1950s. As a staunch Democrat, Freedman’s career highlights include helping draft a new charter for the city of Philadelphia (and later serving as city solicitor under the newly instated charter), extensive work as an anti-discrimination advocate for racial and ethnic minorities, and federal judicial appointments with the United States District Court and the United States Court of Appeals. This collection, which dates from 1850 to 2011, with bulk dates of 1938 to 1971, consists of correspondence, case files, logs, research, memoranda, writings, speeches, reports, manuscripts, and clippings evidencing the workings of city and state government, especially during the period of the City-County Consolidation. Abstract:
The Friends Neighborhood Guild social settlement was founded by Quakers in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia in 1879; its mission, “...to serve and respond to the needs of the people in its community, particularly those people who are less able to help themselves,” (FNG, p.3). Throughout its more-than-hundred-year history, this mission has guided the Guild’s programs, which have evolved to meet its ever-changing constituents’ needs. At different times, its work has focused on education, Americanization, recreation, housing, community organization and other areas of social need. The Friends Neighborhood Guild records date from 1903 to 2004, with the bulk of materials dating from the second half of the twentieth-century. Charles Morice papers, 1862-1970 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Charles Morice was a prolific spokesman for the Symbolist movement. He was at times a poet, playwright, shipping clerk, literary critic, professor of literature, and lecturer. He collaborated in the founding of Mercure de France, the “organ of the purest Symbolism.” He attended Stéphene Maliarmé’a “Tuesdays,” weekly social gatherings of Symbolist writers and painters. While writing for Le Matin he was assigned to cover the death penalty debate. He corresponded with many famous artists on their thoughts on the death penalty. He also collaborated with the painter Paul Gauguin on his book Noa Noa, and with Auguste Rodin on his book Les Cathedrals des France. Dr. Albert Schatz joined the staff of the Science Education Department at Temple University’s College of Education in 1969. Dr. Schatz was internationally known for his scientific research. His most important work, and the major subject of this collection, concerns the discovery of the first effective drug against tuberculosis – the drug streptomycin – during the years 1943 and 1944. His other research, which is also represented in this collection, explored a proteolysis-chelation theory of tooth decay and the potential dangers of water fluoridation.

Dorothy Ann Mereness, R.N., Ed.D., F.A.A.N., was Dean of the School of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania from 1965 to 1977 and a pioneer in the development of psychiatric nursing. This collection consists of personal papers and institutional files. The personal papers document Mereness's professional development. Although largely incomplete, the organizational files show the extent of Mereness's involvement in the development of nursing at both regional and national levels.
