Josiah S. Studdiford Family Correspondence, 1807-1862 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Consists of the personal correspondence of Josiah S. Studdiford (1837-1862), documenting his service with the 4th New Jersey Infantry during the U.S. Civil War, including battles in which he was involved; his capture and time as a prisoner of war at Libby Prison (Va.) in the summer of 1862; and his death during the Battle of South Mountain (Md.) on September 14, 1862. Also included is the largely personal correspondence of several of Studdiford's relatives, including his grandfather, John Neely Simpson (1770-1832); his brother, Peter Augustus Studdiford (1828-1886); and his uncles, James Hervey Simpson (1813-1883) and Josiah Simpson (1815-1874). Many of those represented were Princeton University graduates.

Mary Brackett Willcox papers, 1842-1854 (bulk) 1807-1864 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection contains mostly incoming correspondence to Mary Brackett Willcox (1796-1866), wife of James M. Willcox (1791-1854) whose family owned one of the most significant paper mills in the country in Ivy Mills, now Glenn Mills, Pennsylvania. Along with their status in industry, the Willcox family was also one of the most prominent families within the Catholic community in the Philadelphia area. The family’s mansion became the center of Catholicity in Delaware County, and served as the beginnings of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, the oldest parish in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. During the 1840s and 1850s, students and the Vincentian administrators of St. Charles Borromeo Seminary spent their summers at the Willcox estate. The letters in the collection are from Vincentians, seminarians, and other priests serving the Archdiocese of Philadelphia who formed close ties with Mary and the Willcox family during this period. Abstract:
The Black Women Physicians Project records contains documentation of the lives and careers of Black women in medicine, compiled by Margaret Jerrido, who served as an Archivist at the Medical College of Philadelphia. Started in the 1980s by Jerrido, BWPP is an artificial collection (a collection with materials from disparate sources intentionally arranged for research use) and includes not only Biographical Reference Files, but also oral histories, planning materials that supported BWPP, and photographs. Because the records are largely photocopies of materials from various times, BWPP covers a date range of 1807-2013, with the bulk of materials (especially original materials) covering 1971-1992

Thomas Willis writings relating to the Separation and Quaker testimonies, 1807-1848 (inclusive)

Abstract:
These writings, apparently a draft in answer to Evan Lewis's defense of Hicks, elucidate Willis's beliefs and his account of the Separation, including his being part of the committee that presented the complaint against Hicks which culminated in the disownment of Hicks in 1829 by the Orthodox faction. Willis defends the importance of the Bible, the divinity of Jesus, and the authority of the Church. Includes a draft of a letter to Josiah Forster (1848) in which Willis refers to the Wilburite Separation in New England Yearly Meeting and to a proposal presented at Philadelphia Yearly Meeting to hold a meeting of representatives from all American yearly meetings and also a draft of a letter of advice (1807) written by Thomas Willis to an unnamed young woman in his role as Elder.

John Greenleaf Whittier was a New England Quaker poet, journalist, and abolitionist. His poetry, inspired by his religious and moral beliefs, was well regarded during his lifetime, and he was respected by both Orthodox and Hicksite Quakers. This collection contains portraits of Whittier at various ages, photographs of his homes, and a lithograph on stone, among other items. Included are photographs removed from two albums and placed in sleeves.

This collection consists of five letters, donated by Thomas Hamm, written by Quakers around the East Coast of the United States: a majority of who are from Pennsylvania. The first letter is addressed to Susannah B. Habers of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1807 and is from a child of Habers. The second letter, from James to Thomas Kimber in 1820, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, updates Kimbers about James's infant. In the third letter, Alfred Cope, owner of a prominent Philadelphia shipping company, writes to his daughters (addressed to Elizabeth W. Cope) in Chester County, Pennsylvania, about the conditions of his sick father, Thomas Pim Cope. In the fourth letter, addressed to Haverford College Class of 1861 John G. Abstract:
Eugene S. Richardson, Jr., was the Curator of Invertebrate Paleontology at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, Illinois. The collection consists of genealogical research files on the Richardson family and allied families. There is also a significant amount of research on the Netherlands Antilles and family members who settled there. Materials include: photocopies of newspapers articles, correspondence regarding the research (and some personal correspondence), printed materials, family charts, photocopies of 18th and 19th century documents, calling cards and invitations from the 19th century, photographs, and a very detailed card file of information on various family members. Two significant older items are "Richardson's journal, 1807," which has been photocopied and transcribed, and a notebook titled "Records" that describes family-related events in the 18th and 19th centuries. A graduate of Westtown School (West Chester, Pa.), Mary Larkin Thomas (1886-1981) was a horticulturalist who was known, along with her mother and sister, in the area of Chester County, Pennsylvania as an "herb doctor." Thomas practiced herbal medicine; in particular, she used these skills to care for the infants of local Quaker families. She was also involved in numerous organizations, particularly Quaker associations. The Mary Larkin Thomas family papers, 1807-1981, include mostly correspondence, photographs, and other personal papers of Mary Larkin Thomas as well as papers of her immediate family members, in particular her sister Rachel C. Thomas and her mother Rebecca J. (Hallowell) Thomas. There are also some financial records of Mary's father, R. Henry Thomas.

Benjamin Sharp Family Papers, 1809-1915 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Benjamin Sharp (1858-1915), a zoologist who was primarily affiliated with the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, attended Swarthmore College (1876) and earned a M.D. and Ph. D. from the University of Pennsylvania. A birthright member of the Society of Friends (Quakers), Dr. Sharp was the son of Benjamin and Hannah B. (Leedom) Sharp of the Germantown section of Philadelphia, Pa. He was married to Virginia May of Ridley, Mass. The family moved to Massachusetts in the early 20th century, and Dr. Sharp served as Representative for Nantucket to the Massachusetts Legislature. The collection consists primarily of correspondence from friends and colleagues, memorabilia from Swarthmore College, and family materials, including the diary of Rebecca Sharp.

Abstract:
The collection contains correspondence, writings, and other papers of the family of Ezekiel Hunn and Lydia Jones Sharpless Hunn, Philadelphia and Delaware Quakers. The papers were compiled by their granddaughter Katherine Hunn Karsner (1899-1993). She was a Philadelphia Quaker minister and married Joseph Reed Karsner in 1930 under the care of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting (Hicksite). The bulk of the collection is composed of correspondence from their daughter, Mary Ann Karsner Kegler (1932-1983) who moved to Alaska in 1950 and was one of the founders of Chena Ridge Monthly Meeting. The collection also contains earlier family correspondence between Ezekiel and Lydia Jenkins Hunn and other members of the Hunn family. The writings include diaries and writings by Katherine Hunn Karsner, her sister Lydia Hunn Williamson, Joseph Karsner, and Mary Ann Karsner Kegler.

The area of Plumstead Township (Bucks County, Pa.) was originally settled in the early 18th century by English Quakers, but soon grew into a diverse community. The township was officially established in 1725 and was initially an agrarian community, although many businesses and industries were eventually established due to the presence of a nearby highway. The Plumstead Historical Society local history collection, 1809-2014, consists of various primary and secondary-source materials donated to or collected by the Plumstead Historical Society relating to the history and residents of Plumstead Township.

The primary authors are Edith Mason Smith (1857-1944) and her husband, Joshua Cowgill Smith (1857-1911), their children Elizabeth Newlin Smith (1884-1977) and her husband J.M. "Some Memorandums respecting my beloved wife Margery Mickle", 1809 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The memorandum written by Margery Mickle's husband (name unknown) recounts Mickle's illness with "tumorous pollypus" in the corner of her right eye and her nose. Her husband writes about the series of operations she underwent to remove the tumors, the re-emergence of the tumors after a number of operations, and the doctor's recommendation that they remove her right eye. The manuscript describes Mickle's decision not to undergo the operation to remove her eye, and recounts her final days, including visits from friends and family, and some quotes from Mickle's last days, as well as a description of her final moments and death in 1809. The manuscript provides a detailed account of medical practice at the time, as well as the traditions surrounding death and dying.

This collection of material was largely collected by Richard A. Gimbel and dates from 1809 to 1995. It includes numerous original manuscripts and correspondence by or related to Poe.

Built in 1767 in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Cliveden served as the home of the Chew family for over 200 years and played a key role in the Revolutionary War Battle of Germantown in 1777. Abstract:
William Watts Hart Davis was graduated from military school in Norwich, Vt., in 1842, was professor at Portsmouth (Va.) Military Academy, studied law, was an officer in the Mexican War, returned home to Doylestown and practiced law, was appointed to various government offices for the territory of New Mexico, 1853-1857, returned home where he purchased the Doylestown "Democrat," recruited the 104th Pennsylvania Regiment, and served through the Civil War, returned home to spend the rest of his life managing and editing the Democrat, and speaking and writing on historical subjects. Davis's papers are arranged into several volumes. His incoming correspondence, 1832-1846, 1857-1860, 1880-1882, from family and friends touches on all his activities, with many passing references to politics, although the content is primarily of personal affairs. The Frankford neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is located in the lower northeast section of the city and is bordered by the Frankford Creek on the south, Castor Avenue on the west, Cheltenham Avenue on the north, and roughly the I-95 expressway on the east. Originally a village, Frankford was incorporated as a borough in 1800 and was later absorbed into the City of Philadelphia in the 1854 Philadelphia city/county consolidation.
