Abstract:: The Aimwell School in Philadelphia was founded in 1796 by Anne Parrish (1760-1800) for the purpose of providing "a good English education" in the primary and grammar grades for underprivileged girls. It was instituted by the Society for the Free Instruction of Female Children and operated under the management of the Society of Friends.

Abstract:: The collection is composed chiefly of letters of members of the Society of Friends in the United States from the 17th to the 20th centuries; there are also documents, clippings, published articles, and miscellaneous manuscripts.

Friends School Haverford records, 1885-2010 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The records include minutes, reports, newsletters, correspondence, photographs, lists, financial records, curriculum records, notes, printed material, school publications, book manuscript and drafts, clippings, and other papers of Friends School, Haverford. Many of the records originated during the tenure of Miriam Brown as principal, 1950-1980, and include her notes, drafts, etc. for "Friends School Haverford, 1885-1985," a centennial history of the school.

Friends Freedmen's Association Records, 1863-1982 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Friends' Freedmen's Association was an organization of Philadelphia Quakers founded in 1863 as Friends' Association of Philadelphia and Its Vicinity, for the Relief of Colored Freemen. Its purpose was to provide relief and education to formerly enslaved people during and after the Civil War. The name was changed circa 1873. From 1947-1955 the Association supported black students in schools and summer work camps. From 1955-1970 the income from investments was used to provide grants for scholarship to needy black students. From 1970 income and principal was distributed yearly primarily among Bryn Mawr, Earlham, Guilford, and Haverford Colleges. In January 1982 the Association was dissolved. The funds were distributed among the four colleges named above to be used as aid to black students as the J. Henry Scattergood Scholarship Fund. New York Female Association records, 1798-1988 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Formed in 1798 to give aid to the sick poor, the New York Female Association created the first public female school in New York in 1800. Until 1845, it worked with the Free School Society to establish and maintain public schools in New York while also continuing its efforts to help the indigent. Since 1845, the association has been a small gift-giving committee. The collection includes minutes and financial records.

Howard Malcolm Jenkins Family Papers, 1724-1904 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Howard Malcolm Jenkins (1842-1902), a birthright Quaker, was a scholar of Pennsylvania history and genealogy and published many books and articles based on his research. He was an active member of the Society of Friends, editor of the Friends Intelligencer, and served on the Board of Managers of Swarthmore College. The collection contains family papers and genealogical material on the Jenkins and Foulke families, correspondence of Howard M. Jenkins, and his publications and writings. Correspondents include William W. Birdsall, Isaac H. Clothier, Jesse Jenkins, Anna T. Jeanes, Graceanna Lewis, Joseph Swain, Joseph Wharton, Joseph Foulke, John W. Graham, and Thomas Hodgkin.

Sarah Jones Family Papers, 1817-1907 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Sarah (Sallie) Jones was a Bucks County Hicksite Quaker. She was the daughter of Amos and Margery Jones of Makefield Monthly Meeting and was educated at Ercildoun School in Kennett, PA. In 1859, she married William G. Cox of Goshen Monthly Meeting. This collection contains family correspondence and correspondence between Sarah Jones and her schoolmates at Ercildoun Boarding School. It also includes miscellaneous material such as a sermon by George Truman (1863) and teaching certificates for Sarah Jones, 1843-1856.
