Overview and metadata sections

Howard Malcolm Jenkins (1842-1902), a birthright Quaker, was a scholar of Pennsylvania history and genealogy, and published many books and articles based on his research. He was an active member of the Society of Friends, editor of the Friends Intelligencer, and served on the Board of Managers of Swarthmore College.

He was born on March 30, 1842, in Gwynedd, Pennsylvania, the son of Algernon Sidney Jenkins and Anna Maria (Thomas) Jenkins. Educated at Foulke's Gwynedd Boarding School, Jenkins taught school for a brief period, and in 1862 entered into partnership with Wilmer Atkinson to publish and edit newspapers. On March 16, 1865, he married Mary Anna Atkinson, sister of his partner and daughter of Thomas and Hannah (Quimby) Atkinson of Upper Dublin. They had seven children: Charles Francis who married Marie Cope; Anna Mary, married I. Daniel Webster; Thomas Atkinson, married Marian Magill, daughter of a president of Swarthmore College; Edward A, married Mary Ellen Atkinson; Algernon, died in young childhood; Florence; and Arthur Hugh, married Ann Roberts.

In 1884, Howard M. Jenkins purchased The Journal, a Hicksite Quaker publication, and, upon its merger with Friends Intelligencer, became chief editor of the combined publication. Also in 1884, he wrote Historical Collections Relating to Gwynedd, an historical and genealogical study of his native township. This was soon followed by a variety of other articles and books. In 1901, he was elected to the Board of Managers of Swarthmore College. An influential and deeply valued member of the Society of Friends, Jenkins died tragically in an accident at Buck Hill Falls on October 11, 1902. An endowed chair at Swarthmore College, the Howard M. Jenkins Professorship of Quaker History and Research (later the Howard M. and Charles F. Jenkins Professorship of Quaker History and Research) was created in his memory.

Donor: Elsa P. Jenkins (student essay book), 1988

The collection was given by Charles F. Jenkins, the son of Howard M. Jenkins

As received by Friends Historical Library, this collection was arranged by topic, with correspondence and reference materials put together into individual envelopes and marked with a descriptive phrase. It may have been initially arranged in this manner by Jenkins himself, but the envelopes were labeled and some additional material inserted (Jenkins' own obituary, for example) posthumously. A student essay book by Jenkins was added to the collection in 1988. The original order was largely retained when the collection was reviewed in 1989, with the exception of Series 1, which was unmanageable in its original form. In its revised organization, materials are organized by individual or family unit. The original checklist, compiled in the `30's or `40's with envelope descriptions and an inventory of individual items, has been retained with administrative information with the collection.
