Abstract:
Frank O. Wargny's 1947 master's thesis at John Hopkins University, entitled "Education of the Freedmen by Baltimore Quakers during the Civil War and Reconstruction Period," describes the efforts of Philadelphia and Baltimore area Quakers to provide education to freed slaves during and after the Civil War. It provides a brief history of Philadelphia area Quakers' abolition efforts prior to the Civil War, including the work of Benezet and Woolman, but the majority of the manuscript focuses on the years during the Civil War and Reconstruction. The volume includes the following chapters: Preliminaries, Efforts of Philadelphia Orthodox Friends, Efforts of Philadelphia Hicksite Friends, The Baltimore Association for the moral and educational Improvement of the Colored People, and Teaching the Freedmen.

Mary Williams Shoemaker (1861-1953) was a Quaker philanthropist from Germantown, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Franklin and Mary (Williams) Shoemaker. The collection contains chiefly journals (1934-1945) and correspondence (1914-1953) relating to Shoemaker's support of Quaker historical, educational, and social service agencies; together with correspondence of her brother, Thomas Howard Shoemaker (1851-1936), relating to his historical interests and civic activities. Includes deeds and business papers relating to Shoemaker family properties in Philadelphia and Pike County.

The Speakers' Bureau of the Friends Peace Committee, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting was founded as a volunteer-run sub-committee for the Friends Peace Committee. The Bureau worked with schools, civic groups, service clubs, and church groups, among other organizations interested in "discussing or studying problems of the international order and the strengthening of the peace," according to one of their brochures. This collection is comprised of six volumes of record books for the Speakers' Bureau of the Friends Peace Committee, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting.
