Abstract:
Albert LeCoff (born 1950) is a co-founder and the Executive Director of The Center for Art in Wood (formerly known as the Wood Turning Center) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Since the mid 1970s, Albert has worked to promote the art of woodturning, woodworking, and the artists involved in these pursuits through developing programs at the Center, organizing conferences and exhibitions across the United States, and lecturing internationally. The Albert LeCoff early records of the Center for Art in Wood, 1982-2008, consist largely of slides of artworks and other materials that pertain to exhibitions, conferences, and symposia. To a lesser extent there are administrative and publicity materials relating to the early administration of the Center; photographs; printed materials; ephemera; and correspondence.

Abstract:
Violette de Mazia (1896-1988) was hired by Albert Barnes to teach at the Barnes Foundation in Merion, Montgomery Township, Pennsylvania in the mid-1920s. She worked closely with Barnes and many of his colleagues. In 1950, de Mazia was named the Barnes Foundation's Director of Education, and in 1951, after Barnes' death, she was appointed to its Board of Trustees. The Violette de Mazia papers, 1891-2013 (bulk 1923-1988), primarily consist of materials relating to Violette de Mazia's work at the Barnes Foundation on its campus in Merion (Montgomery County, Pennsylvania) as a teacher, the Director of Education, and a trustee. There is also a small amount of her personal papers in the collection. The collection is organized into series: I. Class materials, II. Letters and documents, III. Photographs, and IV. Resource materials.

Abstract:
Ashley Bryan (1923-2022) was an artist and storyteller best known for his award-winning children's book illustrations with particular emphasis on African folktales and African-American spirituals. Bryan authored, illustrated, published, and distributed his first book in Kindergarten, later graduating from Cooper Union and Columbia University, being awarded a Fulbright to study at the University of Freiburg, before becoming a professor at Dartmouth College. The collection documents his lifelong devotion to the arts including sketchbooks, artwork, and especially materials relating to the publication process of over sixty book projects. Samuel R. Joyner artwork collection, 1947-2005 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Samuel R. Joyner is among the small number of African American cartoonists in the United States. Born in Philadelphia in 1924, he received early attention and publication credits. Joyner enlisted in the United States Navy after graduating from high school during World War II. Upon his return to the United States, he enrolled into the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art (now University of the Arts). His experience with racism and discrimination, primarily in the Navy, served as the backdrop for the kind of artwork he desired to produce. Over the years he would become a recognized “visual voice” for African Americans as represented in mass-circulated magazines and newspapers. His work has been published in over 40 different publications. Historic Yellow Springs is a non-profit organization in Chester County, Pennsylvania that preserves and promotes the history and arts of Yellow Springs village. The village was the site of 18th and 19th century spas; the first military hospital in North America, built during the Revolutionary War; an orphan school for children of Civil War Soldiers; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA)'s Country School; Good News Productions, the film studio that created The Blob; and Chester Springs Studio, a vibrant arts center that merged with Historic Yellow Springs in 2007. The Historic Yellow Springs collection, 1823-2013, is a combination of original records and collected secondary-source materials about the several organizations that have occupied the village of Historic Yellow Springs over its long history from 1722 into the 21st century.

Woodmere Art Museum, located in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was officially established in 1940 through the will of Philadelphia businessman, civic leader, and art collector, Charles Knox Smith (1845-1916) and is dedicated to Philadelphia-area artists. The building, grounds, and core of the museum's permanent collection were gifts of Smith, who purchased the Woodmere estate in 1898 and renovated it to better display his collection. Ian Hamilton Finlay (1925-2006) was a Scottish poet, artist, and landscape and garden designer, best known for his prints and pamphlets and his iconic garden Little Sparta, a collaboration with his second wife, Sue MacDonald-Lockhart. Graeme Moore is an English landscape and garden designer and critic, and former head gardener of Little Sparta. This collection contains material collected by Graeme Moore related to his relationship with Ian Hamilton Finlay and Finlay's work.

Abstract:
James Edward Brewton (1930-1967) was an American painter and printmaker who attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and exhibited works in Philadelphia and in Denmark. Brewton's early works are said to be expressionist and his later works incorporate graffiti and the influences of "pataphysics." His life was cut short by suicide at the age of 37. The collection is arranged in four series: I. Personal material; II. Artworks; III. Books and audiovisual materials; and IV. Artifacts and memorabilia.

Edward St. John Gorey (1925-2000) was an American author and artist, primarily known for his children's stories and illustrations of children's books, although he also produced adult-oriented work. Sometime around 1977, Gorey established a company, Doomed Enterprises, to handle all matters related to publication and licensing of his work. This collection consists primarily of records of Andreas Brown's and the Gotham Book Mart's records relating to Doomed Enterprises, documents relating to the execution of the Edward Gorey estate after 2000 (for which Brown served as an executor), and other documents and artifacts documenting Gorey's public image and legacy.

Etta Winigrad (1936- ) is a Philadelphia-based sculptor who works primarily in clay and mixed media. She earned a Bachelor of Applied Arts from the University Pennsylvania in 1958, and completed postgraduate study at Moore College and at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1976. Winigrad's figurative ceramic sculpture combines realistic and fantastical elements, animal-like figures, and humor. This collection, which focuses on Winigrad's life and work as an active artist, includes correspondence, notebooks and sketchbooks, exhibition records, photographs, and negatives. Each of Winigrad's sculptural works is represented in a number of slides, which comprise the bulk of this collection. These images are available online.

Ursula Sternberg-Hertz (1925-2000) was a Philadelphia based artist who lived in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, England, and Canada before immigrating to the United States in 1971 with her husband, conductor Jonathan Sternberg. The collection documents her artistic career, with artwork ranging from rough sketches to finished pieces, using acrylics, charcoal, markers, pen-and-ink, stamps, watercolor, and other experimental mediums. She produced artwork on paper, metal, fabric, and leather; in sketchbooks; and on objects such as lampshades and boxes. In addition to her artwork, there is also family and personal material; correspondence; diaries, including an extraordinary run of her "visual diaries" from the early 1940s and from the 1970s until her death; and material related to her exhibits.
