Friends School Haverford records, 1885-2010 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The records include minutes, reports, newsletters, correspondence, photographs, lists, financial records, curriculum records, notes, printed material, school publications, book manuscript and drafts, clippings, and other papers of Friends School, Haverford. Many of the records originated during the tenure of Miriam Brown as principal, 1950-1980, and include her notes, drafts, etc. for "Friends School Haverford, 1885-1985," a centennial history of the school.

Sydney Hunt collection, 1930-2004 (inclusive)

Extent:: 2 linear ft. (5 boxes)
Abstract:: This collection consists of 101 glass lantern slides, taken by Sydney Hunt and C. (Khalil) Raad in the 1930s in Palestine. Sydney Hunt traveled through Palestine and Germany in the 1920s. He purchased some of the slides from Raad, a professional photographer, and took others himself. Also included in this collection is a draft of Hunt's book The Joyful Traveler: Wanderings of Sydney Hunt, 1932-1934, with hand corrections. Hunt had written this manuscript in the 1930s, but by the time he had finished, publishers were not interested in happy recollections about Germany. It was not published, therefore, until 2003. Hunt used a number of the slides and other images in this collection to illustrate the book once it was published.

Douglas V. and Dorothy M. Steere papers, 1896-2003 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Douglas and Dorothy Steere were prominent figures of the Quaker movement in the twentieth century, and deeply committed to the causes of peace and spiritual enrichment. This commitment is evident in their involvement with Quaker-led relief work after World War II, Quaker spiritual retreats, international diplomacy, and Dorothy's work with the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. Douglas taught philosophy at several institutions including Haverford College, and published extensively on topics in Quaker philosophy and history. This collection contains considerable material related to Douglas's work as a writer, professor, and diplomat. Given his role as a distinguished figure within 20th century Quakerism, this material is also relevant to researchers interested in recent Quaker history as a whole. There is also some fascinating material produced and collected by Dorothy related to the Civil Rights movement, including a letter from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

James E. Baker papers, 1972-2011 (inclusive)

Extent:: .26 linear ft. (1 box, 1 volume)
Abstract:: James Estes Baker, Haverford College class of 1956, enjoyed a lengthy career as a member of the United States diplomatic corps, including a period of service for the United Nations. The collection offers insight into Baker's life and diplomatic career, with a large quantity of materials relating to the media scrutiny occasioned by his appointment as the first Black US diplomat to serve in South Africa during Apartheid. Collected materials include biographical information, personal correspondence, periodicals and official reports related to Baker's diplomatic work, photographs, and a scrapbook containing newspaper clippings pertaining to his South Africa appointment. A majority of the materials are dated from 1972 to 1973, at the beginning of his appointment to the Pretoria, South Africa embassy.

Haverford College History Department Junior Seminar Papers and Other Course Papers Based on Haverford Collections, 1969-2012 (inclusive)

Extent:: 7.75 linear ft. (31 boxes)
Abstract:: In 1969, the history faculty of Haverford College created a seminar for its student history majors requiring significant papers concerned with historical evidence and based on documents in Haverford's manuscript and photography collections. The papers are described here under the course number: History 361. The seminar came to an end in 2004. Papers resulting from other coursework within the history department which faculty also deemed worthy for research purposes are also here, but housed separately from the 361 papers. Thus, here are papers from History 240, History of Quakerism (1991, 1999); papers from History 347a, Quakers in Asia (1989); and one paper from History 347b (1989). (Note: There is also 1 paper from 340a, spring 1990, filed in Box 1989-1). In 2012, papers from Independent College Program, Picturing War: Goya to Abu Ghraib were added to this collection.
