Livezey-Laughlin Family Papers, 1746-1948, about 1763-1995 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Papers of the Livezey and Laughlin families. Thomas Livezey (1723/4-1790) married Martha Knowles in 1748 at Abington Monthly Meeting. He was a miller and expanded the family property along the Wissahicken and Cresheim Creeks. Thomas Livezey's great granddaughter, Anna, married George Laughlin, and her son, Thomas, moved to Ohio. This collection includes correspondence and legal and financial papers of the Livezey and Laughlin families of Philadelphia and Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and and later of Ohio.

Benjamin F. Whitson Family Papers, 1835-1957 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Benjamin F. Whitson (1867-1957) of Moylan, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, was a Quaker businessman. Whitson was active in Quaker affairs such as Friends World Conference in 1937 and the Fellowship of Reconciliation, and in Quaker concerns such as peace, temperance, and education. He was the son of Thomas H. and Phebe (Cooper) Whitson, and his family and extended family has deep Quaker associations. Both Benjamin Whitson and his father, were recognized as Quaker ministers and made visits to Ohio Yearly Meeting (Conservative). Benjamin Whitson lived in California from 1905-1907 and was active in Pasadena Meeting of Friends. In later life, he collected letters and genealogical information on the many Quaker branches of his family. Abstract:: The Penguin Club, previously known as the Campus Club and before that the Faculty Club, served as the primary social organization for Swarthmore faculty and their spouses from around 1920 until 1989. The Penguin Club records, 1920-1989, include minutes of the Penguin Club and predecessor organization (including some Men's and Women's minutes), 1920s-1980s; faculty-staff drama production materials, such as programs, scripts, planning materials, and flyers, 1960s-1989; files on other activities of the Campus Club, such as museum tours, potlucks, and picnics; and materials on "The Kovalenko," an annual dinner dance for faculty. Also stored with this collection is one slim volume of records of Jocoseria, a faculty club for Robert Browning enthusiasts (1898-1899), call number RG6/L4-B.

Eugene M. Lang papers, 1919-2012 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Eugene M. Lang (1919-2017) was an American businessman and philanthropist, known for founding an innovative intellectual property firm and for his support of higher education. A 1938 graduate of Swarthmore College, Lang served on the Board of Managers for decades and was one of its most generous donors. This collection consists primarily of letters between Eugene M. Lang and his wife Theresa, from 1944 (shortly before their marriage) into the 1960s, while Eugene was travelling extensively internationally for business; as well as the text of speeches given by Eugene Lang from 1970 into the early 2010s. There are also a large number of letters between Eugene and his parents while he was a student at Swarthmore College, 1934-1938, and coursework from Swarthmore classes. The collection contains some additional correspondence and a small amount of other material, including drawings by Eugene, newspaper clippings, a few photographs, and other documents. There are also 6 reels of 8-mm film.
