Edward F. Stratton Collected Papers on Ohio Quakers, 1770-1967 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Edward F. Stratton (1876-1968) was a Quaker from Salem and Barnesville, Ohio. He served as Curator of the Salem Quarterly Meeting records and was Librarian of the Friends Society, Salem, Ohio. The collection contains historical and biographical information compiled by Edward F. Stratton about the Maule, Stratton, Williams, and related Ohio Quaker families, especially those involved in separations in Ohio Yearly Meeting. Of particular interest are Joshua's Maule's diaries and correspondence concerning the Wilburite-Gurneyite and Maulite separations in the Society of Friends and the Williams family correspondence and diaries written while teaching at schools for freed blacks in Mississippi and Texas (1867-1876).

Norman Walton Swayne Family Papers, 1733-1987 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Swayne family were Quakers of southern Chester County, Pennsylvania. Caleb Swayne was a farmer and tanner, and his son, Benjamin, also operated a tan yard and conducted a school for boys, the London Grove Boarding School. Evan Thomas Swayne also taught at London Grove, but moved to the Eaton Institute, a boarding school for girls in Kennett, after 1865. His son, Edward Swayne, had a greenhouse business and wrote poetry. Edward's sister, Anna Belle, was a photographer before her marriage to Albert Taylor Jackson. Edward's son, Norman Walton Swayne, attended Swarthmore College and then taught at the George School; he was also the family genealogist. The collection includes genealogical research, correspondence, poetry and other writings, commonplace books, deeds and financial records, and miscellaneous materials. Anna Braithwaite Thomas Family Papers, 1869-1943 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Anna Braithwaite Thomas (1854-1947) was a British American Quaker, of Baltimore, Maryland. The collection contains correspondence, drawings, notes, albums, poems, and photos, and eight volumes of diaries (1894-1896, 1936-1944). The earlier diaries describe a trip to England and Europe taken by Anna Thomas and her husband, Richard Henry Thomas (1854-1904), a Baltimore physician. Also included is a notebook (1869-1871) of Richard Henry Thomas while a student at Haverford College, Haverford, Pennsylvania, along with articles and related materials concerning the couple's daughter, Henrietta Martha Thomas (1879-1919). These articles relate to her World War I pacifist service in Germany and Austria. Material relating to the genealogy of the Braithwaite and Thomas families is also part of the collection.

In June 1940 at the age of thirty-five, John W. Nason (1905-2001) became the eighth president of Swarthmore College. A strong proponent of the Honors Program, he continued the mission of academic excellence established by Frank Aydelotte while adapting the campus to the pressures of World War. The first series of this collection, 1927-1965, contains John W.Nason's official correspondence and correspondence with faculty. There is also one box of reports collected by Nason's Vice President James A. Perkins, 1944-1946, received as a separate records transfer. Series B, Personal Papers, 1939-1948, includes correspondence received as a separate donation.

Swarthmore Chautauqua memorabilia, 1913-1995 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Chautauqua movement grew out of the American Lyceum and had its beginnings in 1874 at Chautauqua Lake, New York. In the late 1800s, this movement to provide entertainment and education to the American public was extended by circuit Chautauquas which expanded its influence from coast to coast. The Swarthmore Chautauqua was the youngest of the circuits and was founded in 1912 by Paul M. Pearson of Swarthmore College. This small collection of Chautauqua memorabilia contains programs, news clippings, and other material concerning primarily the Redpath Circuit, which operated out of Chicago and Ohio, and the Swarthmore Circuit, which was based in Swarthmore, Pa.

Abstract:
C. Howard Lungren (b. 1855) and Rebecca C. Allen were married in Philadelphia in 1880. They moved to Swarthmore in 1901 and lived at 230 Rutgers Avenue. Their daughter Rebecca married Dr. William A. Raiman in 1879. The Raimans lived at 501 Harvard Avenue, and the house remained in the family until 2001. The collection contains Lungren genealogical material and a record book recording the move to Swarthmore and published booklets by C. Howard Lungren. Also miscellaneous material including photographs of Revolutionary War reenactments on the grounds of Swarthmore College.

Abstract:
Martha Schofield (1839-1916) was a Hicksite Quaker teacher from Pennsylvania who founded the Schofield Normal and Industrial School in Aiken, S. C., in 1868 to provide education for formerly enslaved people. The School gradually evolved into a boarding school for training young blacks in industrial trades or to become teachers. It was absorbed into the public school system in 1952. Martha Fell Schofield was born Feb. 1, 1839, near Newtown, Bucks County, PA. She was the daughter of Oliver W. Schofield and Mary (Jackson) Schofield. Both her parents were involved in reform activities, including abolition, temperance, women's rights, and improved education. She died Feb. 1, 1916. This collection contains biographical information, personal correspondence (1856-1916), and writings (primarily diaries, 1858-1903) by Martha Schofield. Abstract:
Anna Wharton Morris was the youngest daughter of Joseph Wharton, prominent Philadelphia industrialist and philanthropist. She was a birthright member of the Society of Friends, active in prison reform and other social reform movements of her day, and was a profilic writer, primarily of short stories and essays. In 1896, she married Harrison S. Morris, Philadelphia author and arts administrator, and they had one child, Catharine Morris Wright. The collection includes her diaries and journals, maintained almost continuously from 1884 to 1956, correspondence received, her manuscript writings, and other miscellaneous materials. In 1908, L. Hollingsworth Wood corresponded with Quaker-related schools to obtain contact information for graduates living in the New York City area and updated information about teaching Quakerism. Previously, a committee of the Yearly Meeting had conducted a survey inquiring about courses at the schools concerning Quaker history and principles. Fourteen schools responded to Wood's letter. Folder 2 contains Wood's correspondence with organizations and persons concerned with prison reform, 1913-1937. Correspondents include E. Stagg Whitin, Sir John Harris, and Joseph N. Ulman.

The items were given to the Somerville Literary Society, a Swarthmore College women's literary organization, by Charles F. Jenkins to form the nucleus of an autograph collection. Most include a short published biography and portrait with a brief note from the subject. Exceptions are two letters from Elizabeth Cady Stanton. In one, she defends Mrs. Horace Greeley as a supporter of suffrage.

Abstract:
Small collection of family correspondence that includes two letters that concern the Clements and Sharpless families' involvement in abolition activities. Contains a copy and typed transcript of a letter from William Lloyd Garrison Clement (1834-1889) to Gilbert Cope, historian of the Sharpless family, which describes events surrounding the formation of American Anti-Slavery Society and the Clement family's interaction with African-Americans living in the Mount Holly, N.J, area. The typed transcript includes information that a letter published by Cope from Charles B. Clement, brother of W. L. G. Clement, records different details. A letter of 1857 from Mary S. Clement to her son mentions a visit to New Jersey of African-American lecturer Frances Watkins Harper.

Josiah P. Marvel papers, 1942-1966 (bulk)

Abstract:
Josiah P. Marvel (1896-1959) was a Quaker, who worked with the American Friends Service Committee in France in 1940-41 and in 1942 became the chairman of the Quaker Emergency Service in New York City. This collection contains primarily Marvel's files on the Quaker Emergency Service, including its Civilian Readjustment Committee (a clinic that offered men arrested for soliciting sex with other men the option of psychiatric care in lieu of a prison sentence). The collection also includes a typescript of Marvel's unpublished memoir, "Peace in our time," and photographs of him.

Abstract:
Swarthmore College offered its first elective course in Astronomy in the mid 1870's. In 1885, the Board reported a proposal to erect an observatory near the east end of the College property. After Professor Susan Cunningham retired in 1906, Dr. John A. Miller was appointed as Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy. Until 1952, courses were listed under the Department of Mathematics and Astronomy; a separate Department of Astronomy existed until it became the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the mid 1980's. Administrative files, departmental scrapbooks, correspondence, information on symposia and assemblies of the International Astonomical Union, and miscellaneous records. Includes substantial information on eclipses and extensive correspondence with astronomers throughout the world. Correspondants include: Margaret E. Powell, L.J.
