Abstract:
Friends World College was conceived as an accredited, co-educational, degree-granting liberal arts college combining a residence program with the opportunity for foreign travel and study. Planned as a "college without walls," it was sponsored by the New York Yearly Meeting and opened in September 1965. It was merged into Long Island University in 1991. The collection contains Mary-Cushing Niles's files pertaining to all aspects of Friends World College. Mary-Cushing Niles (1900-1993), a management expert and member of Stony Run Monthly Meeting, married Henry Edward Niles in 1923.

Sky Island was a refugee vacation hostel run by the American Friends Service Committee in copperation with the American Christian Committee for Refugees from about 1938 until at least 1947. Flora E. Pottenger was a teacher from Warsaw, Indiana, who worked at Sky Island during the summer of 1946. Her Sky Island papers, all photocopies, include correspondence, reports, and photographs.

The Heacocks were a Quaker family of Bucks and Montgomery Counties, Pennsylvania. The collection includes correspondence, diary, and letter book (1871-1872), of Joseph Heacock (1846-1918), farmer, of Wyncote, Pa., including material relating to his work on a farm in Albion, N.Y., and in iron works in Pittsburgh, Pa., to earn money to pay debts; account book (1836-1877) of his father, Joseph Heacock (1800-1883); papers relating to the teaching activity of his wife, Elizabeth Walker Heacock, and unmarried sisters, Eliza, Annie, Jane, and Martha Heacock, in various Philadelphia area Quaker schools; biographical and genealogical data on the Hallowell, Heacock, Longstreth, and Penrose families; and minute book (1857-1891) of Richland Turnpike or Plank Road Company.

Abstract:
The Collins family was a Quaker family of New England and New York City. Abel Collins (1770-1834) was a birthright Quaker and a minister recorded by Hopkinton Monthly Meeting. He married Mary A. Wilbur (d. 1858) of Hopkinton in 1790, and they had eight children. One of their sons, Abel Francis Collins, was clerk of South Kingston Monthly Meeting. He had three sons who attended Friends Boarding School in Providence, Rhode Island, and continued their studies at Brown University. The collection contains extensive family correspondence (1812-1903) which covers a variety of topics, including schools and education, Quaker concerns, topical events of the day, and family life; journals of Francis W. Collins, including descriptions of his student days at Friends Boarding School in Providence; family business and financial papers; miscellaneous papers, photographs, and genealogical material on the Collins and Burdick families.

Abstract:
Contains the papers of the Stabler family of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Greenwich, Ct., and their collateral lines. The collection spans six generations of a Quaker family and includes diaries, daybooks, albums, pictures, and voluminous correspondence concerned primarily with family issues. Louisa Merritt Field (1826-1914) married Edward Hartshorne Stabler (1813-1877) in 1859. He was the son of Edward Stabler (1769-1831), an Alexandria, Virginia, druggist, by his second wife, Mary Hartshorne. They had three children: Mary Cope (1862-69), Edward Lincoln Stabler (1865-1959) who married Elizabeth Tubby, and Louise M. Stabler (1868-1954) who married George Howard Parker. Louisa M. Samuel Wetherill Correspondence, 1780-1816 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Samuel Wetherill (1736-1816), a Philadelphia manufacturer of cloth, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals, was a birthright Quaker born in Burlington, N.J. During the Revolutionary War, he actively supported the military effort and was disowned from Philadelphia Monthly Meeting in 1779. In 1781, he, along with other disowned Quakers, founded an independent Quaker meeting, called the Society of Free Quakers. This collection contains correspondence primarily from another group of disowned Quakers from Sandwich Monthly Meeting in Massachusetts. This New England group was centered on Timothy Davis (1730-1798), a respected Friend and minister, who published a pamphlet in 1776 concerning the payment of taxes to the new government. He was disowned in 1778. The collection includes business and personal letters as well as those which deal directly with the cause of the Free Quakers. Abstract:
Minutes and financial records for the "Here a Little, There a Little" Chapter of the King's Daughters, an international Christian philanthropic association. Records are dated from the 1892-1975, with gaps. While this New York chapter was primarily Quaker, the association itself was evangelical Christian in orientation, with Baptist and Congregationalist membership in other parts of the world. Members gathered to read Bible passages, discuss Lenten observance, and perform philanthropic work. The latter included donations to the Colored Mission and production of diapers and other garments.

Abstract:
This collection is composed of papers and correspondence of several generations of the Moore and Haines family. Included is genealogical data, correspondence between Lindley Moore and Abigail Mott Moore at Nine Partners and Abby's mother Ann Mott, recounting details of the Hicksote controversy, and letters written by Abby Moore to her daughter Mary H. Moore at Westtown School. An account of the life and death of Mary H. Moore is also included, as well as a letter from Lindley Moore to Elba Monthly Meeting, New York, attesting to the importance of silent worship and requesting permission to hold weekly meetings in a private home. Also included are letters between Emmor and Ann Mott Haines, from his father Reuben, and to other members of his family. Letters addressed to Alfred and Emily (Potter) Haines from members of their family describe London Yearly Meeting and impressions of English Friends. Another letter is written on a daily program from Friends Academy, dated 1863.

Contains transcriptions of John Mott's letters to family and friends and journals, probably compiled to circulate in manuscript form. Also some original letters from John Mott to his family. Mott wrote extensively on his religious views, particularly on Quaker testimony and the issues of the Hicksite separation, as well as the conflicts within Genesee Yearly Meeting which led to the separation of Congregational (Progressive) Friends. Of special interest is a draft of responses to queries dated 1851 which refers to a discipline recently adopted by Friends.

Letters from his parents, Barak and Mary Smith, of Springdale, Iowa, and other relations mention farm life and family concerns.

Clendenon Family Papers, 1789-1975 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The collection contains correspondence, journals, and other papers of the Robert and Elizabeth Clendenon family who served as Quaker missionaries to the Native Americans in Tunesassa, Cattaraugus County, New York, in 1812-1816 and were early settlers of Ceres, McKean County, Pennsylvania. Of special note are the diary and correspondence of Robert Clendenon. The bulk of the correspondence was received by Lydia Clendenon Chevalier and includes two letters dictated by Jacob Johnson, a member of the Seneca tribe whom she met at Tunesassa. Other letters provide insight into the lives of her unmarried sisters who struggled to make a living as teachers. The letters mention family events, Quaker and anti-slavery concerns. Also included are research material and writing compiled by Dorothy Godfrey Wayman in preparation for her articles on the Clendenon and Chevalier families.

Emily Howland Family Papers, 1763-1929 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Emily Howland (1827-1929) was a Quaker humanitarian and educator who is particularly known for her work with formerly-enslaved African Americans in Virginia during and after the American Civil War. A birthright Friend, Emily Howland was the only daughter of Slocum and Hannah (Tallcot) Howland of Sherwood, N.Y. She was educated locally and for a brief period in Philadelphia, and then moved to Washington, D.C. in 1857 to teach at the Miner School for Freedmen. During the war she worked at a contraband camp in Virginia, establishing a school and coordinating relief activities. She returned to Sherwood after her father's death in 1881 and contributed time and money toward the maintenance of the Sherwood School. She continued her interest in the education of African-Americans in the south, and was also involved in woman suffrage and temperance. Edna Postlethwaite (1892-1972) graduated from Swarthmore College in 1914 and earned a masters degree from Columbia University. A Quaker and a member of New York Monthly Meeting of Friends, she was a teacher and involved in many social concerns. The collection contains the letters and diaries of Edna Postlethwaite and photocopies of the letters of G. Edmund Stratton, her uncle, and also a Swarthmore College graduate. Of particular interest is the correspondence of the former with her parents, Clarence E. and Charlotte Lewis Postlethwaite, while she was a student at Swarthmore College.

Joseph Hoag Family Papers, 1813-1864 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Joseph Hoag (1762-1846) was a New York and Vermont Quaker minister who regarded himself as a traditional Friend, opposing both Elias Hicks and Joseph Gurney. He is best known for his "Vision" of 1803 which predicted an American Civil War, and his Journal, the publication of which in 1860 precipitated a schism at Scipio Monthly Meeting into Otisite and Kingite groups. His wife, Huldah Hoag (1762-1850), was also a Quaker minister, as were many of his ten children. The collection contains the manuscript of Joseph Hoag's Journal, as well as some family correspondence and related papers. Of particular importance are the manuscript journal transcribed by Hoag's granddaughter, Narcissa Battery Coffin, under his direction and correspondence from Huldah Hoag, Joseph Hoag, and Lindley Murray Hoag.

The Willets family were members of Westbury Monthly Meeting and lived at their farm, Homewood, from the mid 19th century until 1965. Eliza K. Willets, the last resident, was the daughter of Thomas Whitson Willets and Hannah Keese; known affectionately as Aunt Lila, she graduated from Swarthmore College in 1893. Her sister, Anna, married Edward Morgan Lapham of Chicago in 1908. In 1940, their daughter, Anne Willets Lapham, married E. Wayne Frazer, the son of John E. and Elizabeth Gamber Frazer, and moved to Pennsylvania.

Levinus King Painter (1889-1983) was a Quaker minister, author, and social activist. Born in Spiceland, Indiana, in 1889, he attended Spiceland Academy, Earlham College, and Hartford Theological Seminary. His pastoral service began in Collins, New York, in 1914, and he later served at Poplar Ridge (N.Y.), Monkton and South Starksboro (Vt.), Clintondale (N.Y.), Putney (Vt.), and back to Collins from 1942-56. He also worked as Interim Secretary of Friends Africa Mission from 1956-1957. Papers include scrapbooks, some correspondence, and writings.

Friends World College was conceived as an accredited, co-educational, degree-granting liberal arts college combining a residence program with the opportunity for foreign travel and study. Planned as a "college without walls," it was sponsored by the New York Yearly Meeting and opened in September 1965. The College flourished in the 1960s counterculture environment, but ran into financial difficulties in the 1970s. While much of its support came from Quakers, in 1975 it became officially non-sectarian. It was merged into Long Island University in 1991. A small journal kept by Thomas Carman, 1864 and 1867, describes his travels which included upstate New York, Baltimore, and Richmond (where he attended general Quaker meetings and visited African American services). Also a photocopy of a journal kept by Catharine Williams, describing a trip to Iowa in 1864 where she attended Yearly Meeting. Correspondents include Benjamin Angell, Edward Dorland, George M. Sisson, and Jeremiah Hubbard. Folder 1 contains the commonplace book by an anonymous Quaker man which contains both original and copied works [n.d.]; Folder 2 contains the commonplace book of Aaron Baker (1772-1855) containing original and copies, ca. 1799-1855; Folder 3 holds loose manuscript poems; Folder 4 contains typed and printed poems and a detailed list of all the poems in the collection; Folder 5 contains loose poems by Benjamin Burling of New York City on religious themes, 1794.

The New York Friends Service Committee was established in 1917 following an appeal by New York Yearly Meeting to assist the American Friends Service Committee in its clothing appeal for European war relief. By 1922, the focus had changed to famine relief particularly for Russia, and the Committee was encouraged to work directly through AFSC. This small collection contains minutes, annual reports, and financial records.

Abstract:
Anna Gillingham (1878-1964) was a prominent Quaker educator and author. She taught at Friends Central School in Philadelphia from 1901-05, was school psychologist in the Ethical Culture School in New York City from 1905-36, directed the remedial reading program at the Punahon School in Honolulu from 1936-38, and was a consultant on remedial reading after 1938. She also co-authored a book on remedial training for children with Stillman. She was co-founder of the Orton Society, a national organization promoting research and treatment of language disabilities. This collection contains black and white photos from Anna Gillingham's work, life, and travel.

Abstract:
John Jackson (1809-1855), son of Halliday and Jane Jackson of Darby, Pennsylvania, married Rachel Tyson (1807?-1883), daughter of Isaac Tyson of Baltimore, Maryland, in 1832. Together they established the Sharon Female Academy in Delaware County, Pa. John Jackson was a Quaker minister and served on the Joint Committee on Indian Affairs. Collection contains correspondence and other papers, 1827-1849. Series I is made up primarily of correspondence and drafts of correspondence between Griffith M. Cooper and Joseph Warner, 1835-1838 and 1843- 1846, circulated among members of the Joint Committee on Indian Affairs. Series II includes personal letters, 1827-1838, from Rachel Tyson to friends and family.

This collection includes the letters of John Lockwood, received primarily from Aaron Leggett in 1827-28. Leggett, a Hicksite, relates business, news, and personal opinions concerning the Hicksite controversy in New York Yearly Meeting. His letters contain heated attacks on Orthodox Quakers, including Samuel Parsons, the Clerk of New York Monthly Meeting, Richard Mott, and Anna Braithwaite. He also gives news of Elias Hicks and of the progress of the Indiana Epistle.

The collection is organized into four folders: the group's general records, including the initial plan and charter; the records of the Civilian Readjustment Committee, the post-war arm of the group; information on a project in Brazil; and writings by people outside the group. Of interest are transcript talks given by Peter F. Amoroso of the New York Department of Correction, and Austin H. MacCormick of the Osborne Association. There is also a carbon copy, attributed to John S. Gough, of the Preamble and Constitution of the Spears Mobile Clinics, a medical service to the people of Syria and Lebanon.

Thomas Willis writings relating to the Separation and Quaker testimonies, 1807-1848 (inclusive)

Abstract:
These writings, apparently a draft in answer to Evan Lewis's defense of Hicks, elucidate Willis's beliefs and his account of the Separation, including his being part of the committee that presented the complaint against Hicks which culminated in the disownment of Hicks in 1829 by the Orthodox faction. Willis defends the importance of the Bible, the divinity of Jesus, and the authority of the Church. Includes a draft of a letter to Josiah Forster (1848) in which Willis refers to the Wilburite Separation in New England Yearly Meeting and to a proposal presented at Philadelphia Yearly Meeting to hold a meeting of representatives from all American yearly meetings and also a draft of a letter of advice (1807) written by Thomas Willis to an unnamed young woman in his role as Elder.

Abstract:
In 1908, L. Hollingsworth Wood corresponded with Quaker-related schools to obtain contact information for graduates living in the New York City area and updated information about teaching Quakerism. Previously, a committee of the Yearly Meeting had conducted a survey inquiring about courses at the schools concerning Quaker history and principles. Fourteen schools responded to Wood's letter. Folder 2 contains Wood's correspondence with organizations and persons concerned with prison reform, 1913-1937. Correspondents include E. Stagg Whitin, Sir John Harris, and Joseph N. Ulman.
